How about coaches get reviews in basketball?

Refs have a tough job, and they can get calls wrong. For the most part, teams can and do play through referee errors. However there are critical times when a referee mistake is absolutely critical to the final outcome. For example, down 4 with under a minute left, Gerald Wallace gets hacked on the arm going to the rim, the Thunder get the ball and rush down the court for a fast-break layup. Instead of what should have been a manageable down 2 with 40 seconds left, the game is pretty much out of reach, at down 6 with 40 seconds left.

How about taking a leaf from other sports and giving the coaches the chance to request a review? The review could be called at the next moment that the team regains possession (and any made basket before regaining possession could stand to be overturned depending on the result of the review). Different from other sports, the basketball review would allow for a missed foul to be called, if such a foul was clearly indicated. Team only gets one review request per half, and it does not get taken away, if the request was justified. Team loses a time-out, and loses the review, if the request was unjustified -- therefore, the team must have a time-out available to make the request.

Note, that this has nothing to do with whether refs are baised or whether refs try to control the flow of the game for entertainment factors, or whether the game is fixed. Nothing of that nature needs to factor in here.

Enhancement: maybe complaining to the refs could be outlawed completely. If you have a complaint use the review, otherwise keep your mouth shut. Any complaint is therefore an automatic technical foul. Coaches and players alike would not be allowed to talk to refs, to try and work the refs, even during time-outs; except that the opposing team-captain or coach can signal for a T, if talking-to-the-refs is detected.

Interestingly enough, when refs are "reviewable", they tend to referee the game better, because being constantly overturned is an overt expression of incompetence. Refs do take pride in their work and they dont like to be shown up.

    Just an idea...

I do not think it would be a good idea because you would have ref's calling everything under the sun. Hometown refs would get worse than what they already are. For the most part refs do call fairly and yes the tie almost always goes to the star. fouls are generally called early in the game to set the tempo, alot are called if it is a rivalry to keep the peace so to speak. They already have reviews for the other stuff such as on the 3 point line or who touched it last going out of bounds. Normally you dont see a foul called under the hoop in the final minute while the game is on the line they let the teams play. All in all the system is not perfect but I do not see where they could tweak it and make it any better. Just my opinion.

I'm not sure what the answer is but the refs should be under more scrutiny.  The players got a big dose of "respect the game" this season.  Why not the officials as well?

I'd like to see coaches get some monitor reviews but how it's implemented is the tough part.  And how do you make good on it?  Wallace gets fouled, no call, other team gets a fast break bucket.  Is the bucket wiped upon review?  Is time reset to the point of infraction and FTs then given?  Does the bucket stand, Wallace gets FTs and Portland maintains the ball?  It's a tricky thing to get right in a game that moves so quickly.

Officiating is difficult, but they need to be held accountable considering how much control they exert over the course of a game.

While I agree that Players and Coaches need a bigger voice when it comes to officiating I can't see coach reviews being the answer.  The only situation I can see them actually work in is if there is a dead ball immediately following the play.  I guess that would be better than nothing.

i think that the refs to a fine job. its not an easy job and it is really a difficult task to become a professional ref.
These guys are like Umpire's in baseball, they have to be alert for alot of different things, but a basketball ref has a much more difficult job. Feet, hands, time, motion, a multitude of different factors....all for one shot.
no disrespect to baseball umps, but its like ump'ing in motion.
Running up and down the floor the entire game with the pressure of how many people are going to hate you if you make a bad call, and you have to choose a side, one side of the call is going to be upset with you there is nothing you can do about that, lets just hope they make the best choice possible.

If this officiating is becoming such a big deal to people...you gotta understand sometimes its just a part of the game as well. The addition of a coaches "challenge" would just further prolong the inevitable or further make others upset.
people are impatiant these days, those signs are all around, i can see some people against this just due to the wait.
im sure its been thought of before/ and it probably will be introduced soon.

but one thing i might add on this topic, the new rules with technicals, they have to go, especially the players approaching  a ref justifies a technical, forget that, just have the refs tell em " no no no, no it didnt happen. i saw it" i like watching guys beg and plead time and time again untill they finally get called,ha thats priceless.

found a better trade than Simmons which I tweaked only a little bit to make it more fair

Cavaliers get: LaMarcus Aldridge + future picks

Pelicans get: Anderson Varejao, 10th pick in the draft (Blazers)

    Warriors get: Ryan Ander...

Hey there''s no guarantee Noel will go 1st. If I''m the Cavs I would definitely consider trading down.

I don''t like Dwight, but he''s a top center in the league. I say top not thee top because I''d easily pick Marc Gasol, Joakim Noah, and maybe even Roy Hibbert over him.

I flat out called out LA''s poor passing in a thread a few months ago. His passing is so much better than when he was young but he needs to get better.
