Following the Blazers win over the New Jersey Nets last night in the friendly confines of the Rose Garden, John Canzano talked with Rudy Fernandez.  Portland's much maligned Spanish star indicated that he was happy now here in Portland and has bought a car and even a home.

"And there was also word from Fernandez's Spanish agent that his client has withdrawn his early-season trade demand and is now happy to stay right where he is in Portland." -John Canzano

    then this from Rudy...
"If I get traded now, it's out of my hands."
For me, this smells of business much more so than pleasure.  Thoughts?

Maybe, but neither Rudy nor his agent have seemed to possess much business acumen. ;-)

I believe Rudy really is much happier, largely thanks to Patty Mills, and a little time in which to mature, improve his English, put down a few roots.

This is the NBA , not the boyscouts. Until the owner see's that, we keep hearing this same story over. Chacho part 2.

The same thought, This is the NBA and this is business - everything can happen, almost every player could be trade when You don't know What's the matter it is always about money. this is some saying in Poland I don't Know that is the same in USA but money is money everywhere. I like Rudy and his style of playing but I am Fan of Blazers not him and when He will gone I will not cry.

    GO BLAZERS !!!

The Rudy Fernandez I saw tonight in the Minnesota game, is, IMO...untouchable.  I believe he is worth more to this particular Trailblazer squad than anything we could hope to get in return for him in a move.  Before the inadvertent knee collision with Ridnour, Rudy was all over the floor.  He was aggressive with the bounce, shooting well, and most surprisingly...playing great defense.  All of the anticipation and steals aside, Rudy was moving laterally much better than I have seen from him in the past, staying in front of his man consistently.  Granted, tonight was only Minnesota, and this was but just ONE game.  I will be watching.  If Rudy has been sipping from LA's cup, I vote he stays.

Rudy and Roy have distinct styles. One cannot play without the other. I agree with occassia that

Even though the NBA is business, the environment surrounding a player determines his performance and his future. It might be the reason why the TWolves are still waiting for Rubio to play for them, despite rumors that he wants to play in a big-market team. You cannot simply ignore those factors quoted above. The NBA is a business, sure. But as a business, people should know and understand what they are investing. They just cannot suck the leech dry by paying a player. They have to make them happy and convinced that this is the real deal, and make them proud that this is the team that they belong.

I think we can all thank Patty Mills for Rudy's new outlook on playing for Rip City. Patty is taking on Travis' old role of being the team jokester/friend to everybody.

Rudy played great against the T-Wolves last night... He wasn't shooting very well, until late in the game, but what he lacked in offense he definitly made up on defense. The guy can run and run forever and thats what we need him to do more consitently. He was moving well off the ball and playing great help defense. He did great just because he out hustled everyone.
And i'm way glad Patty was able to befriend him, whether we keep him or not, we have him right now so we should be supporting him and be content that he is now happy, and is normally being effective on the court.

Is Rudy's sudden change of heart supposed to change my heart on wanting him out of Portland? He still can't play great on the ball defense, is pretty inconsistent with his shot and doesn't drive to the rim effectively. Adios Rudy.

I'd still move Rudy for the right price, mainly due to his inconsistencies from 3, but it is nice seeing him actually play 110% on the floor. You could tell last year he wasn't all there, but now he looks rejuvenated. He got his steals last game...if only his 3 point shot would return to form, we'll be in business.

@ClydeFrog...I'd agree with you with an asterisk.  It is very difficult to be a consistent shooter in this league without having a clearly defined role.  So much of shooting is rythym.  With all of the unpredictability this season, Nate is once again finding himself having to make personnel adjustments on the fly.  That translates into ever changing roles and substitution patterns.  It's really too bad that Rudy can't have that consistency with his role and PT, because I think we'd see a different player.

Inconsistency is a characteristic Rudy shares with most of the bench --lots of room for consistency upgrades there.

I think Rudy's got more to show us, which we'll only see if he's working in a position and within a system which supports his capabilities, technically and psychologically. That might not be this team. If the Blazers need to trade Rudy, they will. Shrug.

In the meantime, I'm going to enjoy his little surprises  --Rudy the Bandito? who knew?

We won't all agree on this (duh). We don't all have the same reasons for being fans. See my earlier blog:

I want to say this about rudy he is basically a better player this years his heart and head are in the game. part of rudys problems and everyone forgets this when his back is bothering him he is not as a good a player. how he plays hurt is beyond me.  Yes it is hard to play with all these subs but what he lacks in shooting is great defense, steals and passing the ball to open players.  it amazes me how fast he is on passing and how quickly he sees the floor. yes we have patty to thank and other teammates who helped rudy. i honestly cannot pretend to understand how hard it would be to leave your homeland adjust to a different culture ( I dont always get our culture and heck I live here) , language barrier and adjusting to the nba which is not easy.  I am just glad he is happy and is now playing with his heart which is good.  I think we have seen flashes of what he is capable of doing but I do think fatigue of body and mind effects these guys.  lets face it the blazers have had a really touch schedule so far.  no excuses is right these are pros but do we all have good days at our jobs no...

I know im going to enjoy rudy while he is here. and I will be glad when trade deadline is over.  no the rumours never stop but trading cant happen until july.  anyhow here is to the blazers making the right decisions on trading. i say rudy is more valuable to this team more then ever so it would have to be a great fit for us to trade him.
