I believe the heart and desire are there for Wesley Mattews to become a All star caliber player for these Balzers...what a pick up!
I am a fan of Oden,Aldrige,Wallace,Roy and PG to be named soon as the starting 5!!

I was thinking the same thing at the game tonight. He's not at the level roy WAS at but he has been a great consistant pick up.

I hesitate to compare players, but the attitude and work ethic seem to be there. I think he is absolutely all-star material. I think given the minutes, the team we have may very well be more of a contender than we think it is.

you can't compare Mathews to Roy in his prime. Mathews is a great player, but honestly as long as Aldridge and Batum step it up, and Camby stays healthy, we really dont need him. he is a great asset although

He needs to round out his stats a little, but he's scoring efficiently, igniting the team spark, and playing solid defense.  The same simply cannot be said for Batum.  He plays wonderful defense and rebounds well, but Matthews earned his starting spot has better stats in points, assists, steals, 3pm, FG% and FT%.  Batum is only ahead in rebounds and blocks (he also has a 3-inch height advantage...and roughly a 14ft. wingspan advantage).  What it boils down to is Nic should be far and away a better player.  He can jump, he has long arms, he's quick, and he can shoot or drive.  He lacks the intensity to throw a dunk home with any consistency.  He has shown significant signs of improvement as the season has continued, but he must be placed behind Matthews.  Matthews has worked hard and earned every ounce of praise that he has received.

No. Matthews is good but not GREAT if you know what I mean. It takes a certain something to do what Roy did before, Matthews has the fire but he just doesn't have the gift. The IT factor.

I think Matthews could be better than B Roy if he keeps working hard.  He already is scoring about 20 per game as a starter and the offense flows much better when he is in compared to when Roy or Rudy is in.  I dont think he is nearly as good as Roy 1 on 1 but that will come in time if he keeps working at his game.  Also he is already a way better deffender than Brandon is.  He just needs to work on little things like passing, posting up, and developing a turnaround jumper and he could easily be an allstar and the best player on this team.

He wasn't even drafted and he is already a starter in the league. His offense will only improve from here.

There will only, and can only, be one BRoy.  That said, I believe that people within the organization knew this day was coming some time ago.  The signs have been undeniable.  Wesley being brought to Portland is just one of many of such signs.  At the time of his signing, the consensus reaction was..."but we already have Brandon there.  Maybe he can play a little 3."   I also remember many questioning the size of his contract.  We, as fans, will always be one step behind.

@freddead...absolutely agree with you 100%.  Wesley plays both ends at a very high level and has the motor of a champion.  The part of Brandon's game that IMO is most noticeably absent in Matthews', is the truly rare craftiness around the bucket with the ball BRoy possesses.  Basketball at this level is a game of inches, and Roy was(is) a master of maximizing every inch.  Not sure if that can be taught or learned, but #2 is here to stay.  One thing you will notice in watching Wesley finish around the rim, is that, like Roy, he does it well from either hand

@Bertram...you may be right, but let's hope you're wrong.  Only time will tell.
