    From NBA.com-
"I don't think Portland has the slightest of chances to win the championship," said Webber, a former All-Star and current analyst for NBA TV. "I wish he would take the rest of the year off and get healthy. I think it would be a better investment for the Portland team because there are no guarantees. If you're not going to win this year, then what are you guaranteeing?

"You're guaranteeing that you're still damaging his hurt areas. That's all you're guaranteeing."

How do the fans feel about this? Does Portland need Roy to make the playoffs? If Roy comes back does he improve our seed, does he hurt our seeding? Honestly, I don't think there is a clear cut answer to any of these questions. Yes, we looked great against the Wolves, Warriors, and Bucks, but obviously those teams are the creme of the crop. I think this next three-game road trip, @ GSW,UTA,DEN will tell us if playing without for for a long period of time is a sustainable way of getting wins.

Yeah, I think I agree with you Dustin, no clear answer at this point. (Oops, I had posted the link to this in the other thread about Roy not traveling with the team, earlier today). Let's see how we do against these tougher teams and see where we are in the standing at New Year's and then we can make a better judgement. Time does heal, as the saying goes, and I think if there is a chance we can get to the second round (I want to assume we make the playoffs, though I know as you say and others have said, we are now considering that not being a possibility) somehow with Roy and others healthy, then yeah, get him back in as soon as he feels good, but if we are still depleted and other guys aren't healthy, then maybe we should rest him. It does make me sad to even think like this , but I guess we just have to go with what were dealt/the reality of what the team is going through at the moment.

C-Web is right. It stinks watching a magnificent player hobble, grimmice, and limp through every just about game this season.

When you see a 3 time All-Star physically unable to challenge for loose balls, why is he even on the court?

In some ways, Brandon may be facing the toughest challenge of his life: learning how to rest and relax. If he can learn to do that as effectively as he does everything else, then his basketball career is far from over, even if it changes course a little.

I have no respect for the so-called fans who are ready to toss him in the recycling bin.

I would actually like to see him healthy next year but I know that is impossible. I think the next move is kinda up to Roy unfortunately it may mean he will have to retire if he cant figure this thing out or get into playing status. We owe him this year off. I really dont have any hopes of making the playoffs this year and frankly I would like to take our chances at the lottery. we have 2 number one picks this year if we so choose.  we could turn that into a trading chip and get a veteren star.

I totally agree with Webber on the fact that we are absolutely not winning the championship this year, so I would say rest Brandon and let him do some training to build muscles to help compensate for his lack of menisci. Whether or not that would take the whole year or not, I don't know, I'm not a doctor, but I do think they should take as much time as they need to give him the best chance of being the Natural again. I would say who cares what the fans think right now, this is what's in the team's best interest because a healthy Roy is worth 10 times more than what we would get for an injured Roy in a trade. Plus look what this guy has done for this organization. He deserves more than these fickle fans demanding to trade him already! He is the guy who made me have to watch the Blazers again, plain and simple. If it weren't for him, most of those fans wanting to trade him now wouldn't even care about the franchise in the first place. I know he said some weird things but I take it as he is just showing his frustrations at coming to grips with all kinds of realities. Especially with guys like Quick shoving mics in his face magnifying every little thing he does on and off court.

I think Brandon deserves more respect than he is getting right now from a lot of impatient and irrational fans.

I think that isn't the point. The point is we are not winning the championship this year, whether Roy plays injured or sits out. So either way it doesn't matter. We can talk about seeding all we want but the important thing is if Brandon is allowed to rest is he going to be better in the years to come instead of grinding his knees to a halt to make a better seed in the playoffs this year? And really for no reason, because we aren't winning a championship. I did agree with Barkley last year when Brandon return in the playoffs. Now looking back that might have been what started all this, coming back too soon.

Eh, I don't know.  I'd like to make the playoffs, and if we're going to sit Roy, might as well give Camby and Dre the respect they deserve and trade them.  They don't want to spend another year of their career not making the playoffs.

    • I think it is a bad decision if this organization doesn't sit Roy for the season.
    • Sorry for the analogy, Roy is like a 85 million dollar high performance car that doesn't run now.
    • He ran good for a couple of years, but due to our driving style, we drove him into the ground and now he needs some serious down time.
    • If we don't sit him and let him do the necessary healing, he might never be high performance again.
    • As a fan, I like the team energy without a broken car on the track. Roy wasn't scoring points and he was hurting us on defense and then we were giving him the ball at key times at the end of the games.
    • If we want to salvage our investment we should just think about driving our other really nice cars for awhile.
    • Hopefully they can get us to the first round.

I am of the opinion that Roy should sit the rest of the year, Kenny C. has a great analogy for the situation "Roy is like a 85 million dollar...." If Roy wants to have any chance at a future in the NBA, he needs to take care of himself, hang up the shoes for the season, and reaevulate next year. I can't remember where I read this yesterday but Roy said he doesn't think about the future much and just lives in the now, as far as his carreer is concerned. Right now is the time he HAS to start thinking not only about his future in the NBA, but his personal future as well. I am with Webber on the fact that we do not have a championship team this year (but it would make a great story if we did win one) so Broy should sit out. I am not all about this trade talk, we need to take this year as a learning year(again) and see who should stay and who should go at the end of the season.

Sitting Brandon for the rest of the season does not help his degenerative problem. All it does it prolong the inevitable. What seems to be misunderstood here is that Brandon has almost no meniscus in either knee. That isnt' something that can be compensated for. The meniscus is gone and will remain so. The intermittent rest is for pain and swelling associated with the constant impact his knee joint is having to take with any cushion between the leg bones (aka, the MENISCUS). Brandon could take two years off, come back, play 10 games in a row, and probably have to start sitting out again.

The key to this problem might include resting him for a full month or two, but the whole season would be a waste and ineffective. The main approach is to play him less minutes, regardless of how he feels, and limit the length of time he is on the floor at one time, no matter how he is playing. That would mean taking him out, even if he's hot and playing well, unless we have a 3-4 day long break after that particular game. It means either not playing him on back-to-backs, or playing him very, very little, again, regardless of how he feels. This is entirely possible to do, even with Brandon starting, since Rudy appears to have finally stepped up and WesMoney is a legit offensive option.

The best thing Brandon can do for himself is to hit the gym and work on his perimeter game. Let Wesley be slashing, driving threat (he does this very well most of the time) and LMA be the primary scorer. Brandon has a sweet jumper and a solid three. If he builds on his shooting, he could evolve into our primary shooting threat on the perimeter. Elevation may be a factor, but if his minutes are better-managed and his knees are iced every time he sits down, his pain should be minimal enough to allow him to get off those kinds of shots. Just my opinion, based on my knowledge of the knee, extensive reading on arthritic knee and how to deal with it, and watching how other guys with these types of issues have been handled.

being that webber had multipul knee injuries and played with sometimes less than healthy knees during his career. i sort of respect what he has to say on the matter. so if someone of the calibur of player he used to be says something like this. i have to agree with him. roy should rest the season. webber didnt and his career was cutt short. perhaps webber is using that old thing called been there. done that. wish i could do it differently and heres how.

I don't think that is misunderstood and yes it can. Brandon has had no meniscus in one of his knees before this year, and it was doing well until now. He does have a little meniscus left in each and he can hopefully strengthen certain muscles to compensate for the pounding like he was previously, or he needs to rest for a while and then start the strength training to build up the muscles and then play. I remember last season Brandon was cycling to help his conditioning in the off season, and i really think that helps build up the muscles in your knee without a lot of stress like with running. Not exactly the same muscles but it does seem to help. I know I had bad knees for a few years and whenever I played basketball my knees would hurt in the middle of games swell up afterward. I started cycling for a while and I was amazed I could actually play aggressive basketball again without my knees swelling up afterward. It was a huge difference. So I wonder if that could help Brandon again.

I agree with Roy sitting out the season. Not only because of the reasons that have already been said, Wesley is more than capable of replacing Roy's spot and HOPEFULLY Batum will flourish into the player we were all predicting this season.
