Lots of great stuff in David Aldridge's piece this morning on NBA.com, including a discussion of the relationship between the NBA and Seattle (with mentions of the Trail Blazers), a mea culpa when it comes to Arvydas Sabonis' citizenship and, most importantly, an interview with rookie Armon Johnson:

But he began losing playing time last month to second-year guard Patty Mills, whom the Blazers think is a better fit with the second unit because of his deeper shooting range. Since the Dec. 1, Johnson has played in just one of Portland's seven games, logging just six minutes.

Me: Have the practices become your games?

Armon Johnson: Yeah, we don't get to practice much, either, because the games are coming so quickly. I just come in extra early and leave extra late. I have to bump up my time that I come in and bump back the time that I leave. It just means getting more sleep, eating better, trying to prepare my body to do that, any way I can. If you don't have time to get better with the team, I have to do it somehow. And I've been doing it just that way.

Me: Is it hard to stick with those new habits when there's no reward at the end?

AJ: No, it's easier to come in and do those things. But it's tougher to swallow not playing. It's tough to swallow not playing. That's the only thing that's bothering me right now. But we're winning, so I'm happy with that. I feel like I'm helping the team by just coming in and being prepared.

More where that came from on NBA.com...

it's nice to see Armon's attitude is positive, and he's taking it upon himself to keep himself ready for when he does make it on the court. the turnovers bothered me, but i wouldn't question his work ethic.

Good interview with Armon, I'm sure the hustle in practice will pay off and Nate will give him another chance.  Patty's been known to make turnovers too, but right now Patty is proving a better fit.  Armon just needs to stick with the fundamentals and keep soaking up all that knowledge from Andre.

I still believe in Armon, He just needs to settle in and realize the learning curve of a rookie. He should feel lucky that Nate made him part of the rotation as a rookie, because that is hard to come by.

Nate had to try to do something to get the second unit on track, because of us losing so many games. The turn-overs and poor decision making were just rookie mistakes, that can be over come, but it is Nate's job to win games.

Armon's work habits will make him a more valuable player and I think his defensive skills would have kept him in the rotation if our margin of error was greater.

AJ is a rookie, he is going to make mistakes. How does he get his rythm with the team from the bench? Practice is the same guys every day.
Brow beating ( pulling after a mistake )  doesn't always have a positive affect for the Blazers (Chacho,Bayless,Martell, Travis for example) .
Nate is one leopard the may disquise his spots at times, but never changes them, I thought I was stubborn.....

I still am not seeing the benefit of Nates 3 year plan for pgs. Ride the bench the first year, play over a better pg the second year (Chacho/Bayless), then get traded the 3rd year.

Were also seeing the affect it has had on Nic now, he's the new Travis/Martell.

Hang in there AJ and Nic !!

I thought we gave Armon too much too soon.  He is a good point guard...lots of energy, not enough stamina...the NBA is out up or your out.

Armon has soo much potential because of his length, work ethic, and ability to create with the ball. Right now is not his time though.  Next year will be interesting to see who gets the bulk of the minutes between him and Mills, with andre's contract expiring. I think that Armon will be a great fit for the team and will greatly help this team sometime down the road

Blazersforlife234 must not be Austrailian, I will add defensive presence to AJ's strenghts :)
Next year is guaranteed to no pg with the musical chairs here in Portland. Sad, but true.
I <3 Dre, but he won't play forever, and someone has to take his place eventally. .

Haha no Kim i'm not Australian, and yes defensive presence is a strength, and I would say pretty much goes along with is length at the pg position.  Mills and Johnson is just such an interesting debate because they really are two completely different players.  I will say that if Armon could improve his outside shooting by next year and be a threat from deep, he may be the starter next year

Hard to work on an outside shot in game pressure from the bench. The longer he sits, the longer it will take, imo.

Noel was playing at around 220 so I doubt the added weight will slow him down too much the guy just needs to continue his rehab and hit the weight room and he will be fine.
