Should he be playing as the backup point guard? I say yes. He could seriously help slow down Brooks and is someone else that could attack the rim (it can't just be Roy).

Bayless should be the starting point guard next year. Blake can come off the bench.

The Blazer coaches need to tattoo a 'J.Bayless DNP' on their forehead, so in a couple years they can look in the mirror and think, "Gosh, we sure were dumb not letting Jerryd play in more games."

As much as I love Steve Blake for what he's done for this team, I hope he gets traded or beat out by Bayless for that backup spot. Potential is nothing without playing time. He should be the starter for this team once Andre Miller is retired or out of town.

Are you people serious? Honestly, if Jerryd was good enough to play PG for us, this discussion shouldn't have to take place. The fact the coaches feel so uncomfortable with him at PG he got moved to SG in summer league to play beside Pooh Jeter (yeah Pooh freakin Jeter, seriously) just shows he's not where everyone wants to think he's at. Yes he can jump high, yes he has explosion, but his shot is very inconsistent and he looks at the floor while he's dribbling around. How can you see an open teammate if you're staring at the floor while you're driving to the hole?

If Bayless can beat Blake out for the backup job, good for him. I don't see it happening, and I don't see Jerryd Bayless as a Blazer for too many more years. Hate all you want, but seriously, he couldn't beat Sergio out for the backup last year, he's not gonna beat Blake out this year, he's just not on the same timetable as this team. If we had 3-4 years to wait for our window, I'd say ok let him play and we may lose some games but experience is huge. But our time is not in 3-4 years, it's the next 3-4 years. Bayless is just kinda in the wrong place at the wrong time. We don't have the luxury of being able to throw him out there to learn, we need to win now. That's what it comes down to. Not whether you guys like him more than Blake, or whatever reason you want him to play or start, he needs to earn it, and so far he hasn't. And this team shouldn't have to acquiesce to a guy who's not ready just so he can become ready.

We should trade Bayless to the T-Wolves for the rights to Ricky Rubio.  So in two seasons when Rubio is ready to come over he can have a year to learn from Andre Miller and then he will be ready to take on some heavy minutes.  I see him fitting in perfectly with this team if we can ever get an opportunity to acquire him.  Plus Bayless could be a great 2 guard for Minnesota.  It would be good for both teams if this would happen, but I doubt it will.  Bayless could give the Wolves some right now help that they need, and Ricky would be ready to step in for us when it is time for a new PG.  Hopefully KP reads this and is inspired.

Actually R.A., Pooh was playing the 2 spot, and Jerryd was setting up the offense. Plus, you can't pay too much attention to that 1-4 Blazers Summerleague. The two "shooting guards" the Blazers had out there, couldn't hit the left side of a barn. Coach Prunty had to do something, since the Blazers offense requires the 2 guard to bust out 30-40 points a game (Luckily we got B-Roy and Rudy). I thought Bayless looked like a veteran at times in Summerleague. He didn't put up the astronomical #'s like the year before, but he still was handling some business.
We just want to see Bayless learn and get better. Will he take the back-up PG spot this year? Probably not. But will Bayless keep battling the guys hard in practice, making this Blazer team indestructible? Absolutely! And that's why he deserves more quality playing time.
Think of how sweet it'd be, to watch Bayless in the Rookie/Sophmore or Slam Dunk All-Star challenge. Well he's not gonna get there, unless he makes more top 10 Sportscenter plays. He can't do that, unless he's out there rippin' it up.

Yeah right Skater, KP's will read that, then realize that he's outta t.p. Using your messege to handle his business. Rubio? C'mon. He's not even gonna' play for two more seasons. I'd rather have Jerryd now, then a Euro-stud in 2011-12. I can't think that far ahead.

I guess you didnt pay attention when we signed Andre Miller...  Miller and Blake are on a completely different level than Bayless right now.  And as long as they are both here, Bayless is not going to get a real chance to play.  I do like Bayless, but this is not the team for him, or his style of play.  Since Miller has a 3 year contract, and rubio cant come over for 2 years, he would be perfect.  We wouldnt have to worry about a talent sitting out like Jerryd, cuz he will be in Spain.  Plus I am trying to see a good opportunnity for Bayless.  He is not gonna live to his potential if he doesnt get a chance, and with the Portland Trail Blazers he will most likely not get that chance.  He needs a move like we gave Sergio.  Sergio is going to a bad team with no talent, aside from Kevin Martin.  Now sergio will have a legitimate chance at a starting role, and he will feel more important to the franchise.

It's pretty obvious as to where the blazers want Bayless right now. They were hoping he would learn a lot this summer so he can back up Blake, but he needs more. He'll learn a lot from Andre Miller and hopefully show some improvement down the line.

Actualy T.S., Pooh DID play the PG spot when Jerryd was on the floor. Look at game 2 3 and 4. No one could score, and Pooh was doing better with the ball in his hands, so they had him initating the offense while Jerryd played off guard. Prunty even said it in his interview that he didn't want to play Jerryd at the 2, but no one was scoring and he needed some punch so he played them side by side.

And if you seriously thought bayless looked like a vet at times in summerleague, WOW. I mean a guy averages more turnovers than assists and he looks like a vet sometimes? I know, its summer league, but that doesnt explain why hes making so many turnovers. If nothing else the guys aren't as good of defenders, the defenses aren't as comfortable with each other which is why summer league is a guards league, and that should make it even easier for a guy like Jerryd to carve up defenses and get easy shots for his teammates. Look what Russell Westbrook did, look what Rose did last year, even look what Petteri Koponen did last year.

And your argument that "how sweet would it be to watch Bayless in the rookie/sophomore game or dunk challenge" is ridiculous. I could care less about watching him in those places. He needs to prove he can be an actual basketball player before he even thinks of entering exhibitions like those. Who cares if we have a circus act backup PG, I want a solid guy who will help us win a title. I don't see Bayless as that guy. Can he turn into that guy, who knows. But to say he deserves time so he can get better is dumb. If he can't earn the playing time (like last year Nate tried to have him take over for Sergio halfway through the season and he choked like he was eating dry turkey and Serg got his job back) then he doesn't deserve it. Simple as that.

I am a fan of this team. Here's to hoping for a healthy season!!!

RA, this is a trail blazers fan sight, not a Laker-lovin' Blazer-hater sight. And the forum your writing in, is a J.B. fans group. Not an I think he's a terrible Blazer, and I personally believe that I could take Jerryd off the dribble myself. Especially if we play on that raggety old hoop you got, outside your garage. 'Cause I'll let you know right now, that Jerryd would roll over you like an Escalade that lost it's brakes. A lotta those turnovers in Summerleage, went right though the wickets of the guys he was throwin' it to. So there.

In the summer league it was half and half. Some turnovers were unforced stupid mistake turnovers that RA is dreading about, then some of them were the lack of hands by his teammates.

Most of the time the right idea was there but his skill is just not quite there yet. Takes some time, like a well marinated steak. Give it a year or so under Andre Miller's tutalage...or however you spell that.

It's not that he has to start this year, but he definitely deserves way more playing time.  Blazers should find a way to make things fair for Miller, Blake, and Bayless.

This entire topic seems locked up in Bayless's offensive capabilities and his ballhandling skills.  I don't know about the rest of you, but when I was watching him last season, I was impressed with his defensive capabilities (some impressive blocks iirc).  Any thoughts on that?

Jerryd is the Blazers best defender at the top of the key, other then Batum and B-Roy. He wasn't getting away with ticky-tack bumping calls last year (Ref rookie hazing), so he got had to get subbed out sometimes. It's a learning process, that's why playing time is important for Jerryd. For a lotta Blazer fans, we are kinda' burnt out on developing point guards. (Telfair/Jack) But that's why KP and Nate kept Steve Blake and hired Andre Miller. And that's also why KP isn't trading Jerryd, he's seein' the thing that us J. Bayless fans like... guts, determination, and hardware. Jerryd can straight bring it!

Forget Bayless coming off the bench. START BAYLESS!! Basically 4-4 from three point range today, if only he could get his feet back another 4 inches on the shot, but I'll take the 2-2. Knocks on Bayless: can't shoot the jumper: 2-2 (I'd like to say 4-4) from 3; solved can't set up his teammates: 7 assists; solved It's official, Bayless is our best point guard. Case closed.

I am a big jerryd fan but am curious if he would be more successful coming off the bench. He has so much energy and is such a change in pace that he could be the leader for our bench. We already have a leader in Roy for our starters so by putting Bayless in the second group it will make it so Roy and him are not stealing touches from each other.

Well, I think there are some improvements Jerryd can make; but I'm impressed with his energy, and determination, which I think the Blazers badly need right now. I don't really care whether he starts or comes off the bench; just that he is a consistent go-to guy, which he has proven that he can be. And that's good enough for me, and I hope, for Kevin and Nate.

One thing I don't want to happen, that's happened too much in the past. i don't want to see us trade away good talent, just because we're looking for something "out there" that is more to our liking. I don't think Kevin P. is going to do that, or at least I hope he doesn't do it. I was never a big fan of Glickman because of that - he had a habit of doing it, and to the teams detriment most of the time.

Alright so Bayless took a very slight step back in that denver game (mostly shooting) but drew a lot of double teams and had 7 assists again. He also took pressure off Roy down the stretch doing most of the ball handling and everyone actually seemed comfortable with that. It seemed to me that he earned a few more trips to the foul line then the refs rewarded him with but what are you gonna do. It's going to be interesting to see who the minutes go to once Rudy comes back. Hopefully Rudy gets Blakes minutes.

Actually the Denver game might have been his best performance. He didn't shoot well that's for sure and had some meaningless attempts, but the important thing is he did a good job defending the perimeter, against one of the best shooting teams nonetheless. Our biggest problem is solid defense from the guard and Jerryd did a better job than what we are used to from Blake, and what Miller has shown so far. As he gets settled more he'll do a better job in the scoring, but right now I think his defense is what we should be focusing on. He won't start much until we get Batum and Rudy back on the team (and if you ask me he shouldn't) since we will need him to replace Roy from time to time so he'll act more like a 6th man. I think we will see a consistent and solid performance from Jerryd starting February (assuming we get some of the guys back by then). He'll likely be starting by then, and not just because of the shallow depth on the squad, but because he's ready to lead this team.
