    From SLAM:
Gotta feel sorry for Roy, who says he will keep playing through the pain until he gets microfracture surgery. From the Oregonian: “There’s no meniscus left to operate on in Roy’s left knee. ‘Nah. None. Not in my right, either,’ Roy said Friday. The reason Roy’s knee has been swelling up regularly, to the point where it has already been drained twice by Blazers‘ doctor Don Roberts this season, is because there is no cartilage to absorb the pounding associated with running and jumping. ‘The problem is bone-on-bone there,’ Roy said. ‘Dr. Roberts calls it ‘arthritic knee.’ It’s just something I’m going to have to deal with for the rest of my career.’”

That's just not good news anyway you slice it. At 26 he's already playing bone-on-bone? That's not only going to be painful for Brandon to play with, but I'm not sure he'll be able to play the minutes he's used to or able to attack the rim like he used to.  I just hope for his sake the knees will take a turn for the better.

Wow . . I'm not a doctor quite yet, but I think all of can figure out that that isn't good news for the long-term, as the last line you've quoted mentions. It's going to be interesting to see how he holds up both now and in the coming years. Man, the team can't get a break (no pun intended) in terms of bone health/related structures issues.

I second your statement their D, let's hope it takes a turn for the better, but I DO know that over time, bone-on-bone is not good at any joint - I think you know about arthritis in a general sense - not good.

Hold on hold on...I have no problem with him playing without a meniscus...08'09 he was playing great up until now...what scares me is the "until he gets microfracture surgery."

I'm confused, if he is playing bone on bone, what is micro-fracture surgery going to do? Give him a fake meniscus?

Well if Dejuan Blair can play without either acl's, maybe Brandon can play without his menisci. And I was starting to think he was going to need microfracture surgery, but thank goodness he doesn't.

If you think about it, how we got Brandon Roy was a fluke so in reality, we're really not losing anything by losing him.. If that makes sense.

This is so stupid. Roy has been playing without any meniscus in his knee since the left Knee surgery in 2008. This is not new. It's just that Brandon is feeling it more now, which makes sense, due to two seasons of play on it and the excessive schedule they have started with. Everyone is falling in Jason Quick's new dramatic breaking non-news BS. If you have been paying attention, Brandon and the team have been aware of this for a long time now. Jeez, give me a break!

    This thread is so dumb.

This is hot news now because ROY CAN'T PLAY BALL ANYMORE.

Yes, he has had this for a few years but it was to the point where the dude could take over a basketball game. Now, he can't even drive and attack the rim. He's attacked the rim 1 time in 3 games. Again, this is only news because Brandon Roy is washed up.

God, that's painful. I can't say get well soon. I believe that's a difficult ailment to be healed because it involves bones, cartilages, and to some extent, muscles. Sometimes I doubt if this team has a nutritionist, aside from the trainers at the gym.
We have hordes of SGs right? Why not give them more minutes and give BRoy a surgery and time to heal? The team administration's silence is killing me. They seem oblivious to what is on the mind of the fans.

The Blazers have to find a way to win against the schedule, bad calls, and injuries. No one is going to feel sorry for us, it's time to man up. If Roy needed surgery, he would be having it.
This is not news we havent heard before. We know we can trust Roy. He has played to much recently. Hope LA isn't next.

We have been fed Roy carries the offense, and wait until Oden plays for to long now.

It's been time for a new approach. This team has depth.

He might be playing without meniscus but he is playing with some biscuits to be playing without meniscus.
Man, I feel bad for this ROY, to bad no other team will and it shows - he doesn't move right and he cannot defend, he got his shot blocked a couple of times last night and had to hobble off the court, He's a warrior but He needs to sit down and we need to find a replacement for him this season if we are to be competitive. It's Luke Babbitt time. Nate needs to throw you to the lions, you might not know how to swim, but you should be able to learn pretty fast.

Agreed. It's not like this team hasen't been in this position before and you can't ask the Vets to come through every night.

Very bad information about Roy's knee, but When I am Trail Blazers Fan I hope that He will be better, other players should play more and give more for the team: so Wesley , Rudy and maybe also Babbitt let's go and give Roy some rest and for Portland win next game . Go Blazers !!!

Roy needs to learn to be okay coming off the bench, he's slower than andre out there, he has no explosion, he'd be best utilized against a second unit or a tired first unit. But it's decisions like this that has and will continue to lead to the demise of Nate as a coach in Portland, he has too much loyalty to certain players, and he doesn't lean on rookies like other great coaches do.

Meniscus Injuries are manageable, you can play mostly pain free with the injury if the swelling is managed. I played my Fresh and Soph year in college football with meniscus problems, they keep the swelling out of your foot and drain it  and its manageable.

All this talk about micro fracture surgery is scary, that ends careers, sure there are some good cases but don't jinx the guy. You don't want him turning into the likes of Penny Hardaway, Jamal Mashburn or the new electrifying Mcgrady...

Guys, the problem is he has NO MORE meniscus left in those knees. You can't magically grow it anymore. The meniscus helps pad the knee, but without it, Roy will be playing bone on bone in BOTH knees for the rest of his career. I really don't this there is a cure for this.

Actually you can magically grow it back.

    Micro fracture surgery.

Microfracture surgery is one of the articular cartilage repair surgical techniques that works by creating tiny fractures in the underlying bone. This causes new cartilage to develop from a so-called super-clot.

TL;DR - Poke small holes in the bone, watch cartilage appear!

Also has a varying degree of success for professional athletes. T-Mac, unsuccessful and still unable to attain old form. Greg Oden, tbd. Antonio McDyess, still in NBA but never got back to form but still a contributor to a significant team. John Stockton in 97...well you all know where that led to. Anfernee Hardaway, played 2 years successfully after MF surgery but never really got back into the form of dominance he showed prior to the surgery. Amar'e Stoudemire, was a awesome player before the surgery, and after gained some moves although losing some lift but not much.

It's an very uncomfortable spot to be in as a fan when you think about having your STAR getting MF surgery and how he his body rehabs afterwards.

No you can't magically grow your menisci, articular cartilage is a very different type of cartilage than the meniscus. Articular cartilage is attached to the bone, therefore creating microfractures on the bone will grow back a weaker form of articular cartilage, but you can't grow back your menisci from the same procedure because it is a pad in between the bones (and the articular cartilage). There are meniscus implants and I don't think they would hold up with a pro athlete, but microfracture is not performed to create new menisci.
