Kid has killed it every since we picked him up in the 2nd round. Hope he still continues to progress as the season continues.

AJ really hasn't shined to me as a player at this point to have a big impact on a team. This is more Wesley and Brandon playing together.

Uh Wesley backs up Roy and JB and AJ backed up Dre. Wesley is not a pg. I also think AJ's defensive mindset, toughness and lack of fear has stuck out. All that stuck out with me and JB over the last 2 seasons is he got blocked frequently, commited charges, shot a lot and didn't ever look happy.

Matthews comes in first for Batum at SF.  Then Andre comes out and Roy slides down to PG, and Rudy comes in as the SG.  That'd be the best option, but obviously Armon could simply replace Andre also.

Matthews is worth every penny and more that we paid for him. I say that because he can play the 1, 2, 3, and play them well. He is a guy who can be plugged in effectively no matter where he is. The way I see our roster rotation playing out is our known starting 5

Dre, Roy, Batum, LaMarcus, and Canby

Then subbing in (primarily) will be - Matthews, Fernandez, Babbit, Cunningham, and Oberto

Obviously the center positions will change once greg and priz come back but I would look at that as a pretty solid rotation. With the exception of Armon playing the point later in the game and/or season, as well as fernandez at the PG and Matthews at the 2. I can see Matthews checking in for Batum at times too.

i think Armon will be listed as the backup pg on the depth chart, but Brandon and Wesley will handle most of the backup duties. let's say Andre plays about 30 minutes per game (which he did last season); that leaves 18 minutes to back him up. i can see Armon, Brandon and Wesley each picking up about six each.

@DowntownVinnie: have you really been high on Armon since summer league? hmm ... i hadn't noticed! j/k

I said during summer league when he stayed in front of Wall that this kid was the truth. Id love to see him back Dre up.
Dre' . Roy, Batum, L.A., Camby [17 boards in the preseason. Outrageous.]
    A.J., Rudy, Matthews, Dante',Oberto
    Later;
    Dre, Roy,Batum,L.A., Oden
    A.J., Matthews,Babbitt,Camby, Pryz.
A.J. is also a pick& roll genius on Off. or Def.

Yes i did.I love Dante's game. But pf is not his natural spot. He plays it competently enough, but he's terror on sf's defensively. I think match-ups will ultimately decide where in the rotation he plays. I am still watching Batum's shoulder very closely.

he's a great fill-in at pf until we have a full lineup, but i agree that Dante's natural position is sf. i read earlier today that it wasn't Nicolas' shoulder that was hurt the other night; but that he was poked in the back/neck area.

Nate has said he will cut his rotation down to 8 or9 players. He is in love with combo guards and has often said that a PG wasn't that important in his system. We still have a handful of guards to employ, but I have no idea which ones will get the most playing time.

I have stated many times that I am a fan of BRoy, Matthews, and Batum on the court together. I still believe that will happen, but I have changed the position several times; I didn't know that Matthews could play the point too. That puts more emphasis on Nate's combo guard idea.

I too am a fan of ArmonHammer, downtownvinnie, I feel at the first of the season his time will be limited, but further in the season he may start taking more and more minutes from Dre; what do you think of that Vinnie LOL?

    Kassandra:

My earlier post on my dream lineup was with the assumption that Rudy would be traded or benched. Now with him in the rotation puts a different light on the possible line-ups. After both Joel and Greg comes back, I really don't see much time for Dante; I sure hope I am wrong, but if Nate keeps his rotation down to 8,I just don't see where he fits in. That is the problem with having so much depth. Although with our injury bug and lots of fouls called on our bigs, Dante is very valuable at sf or pf. Nate uses his sf as an outside threat to spread the floor, therefore Dante would have to get better at shooting the three which I believe he will. But as now if he gets playing time I see it at pf on special occasions.

Actually I really don’t have a clue of how the rotation will pan out, but I am on the ArmonHammer wagon as being the future PG and to do that he needs playing time while Dre is still here to help him.

Conditional future first round pick means it's "protected." Example. New Orleans gets into the lottery and has the pick protected up to the 6th pick, this means that if they get 6th pick or higher in the lottery we don't get the pick this year instead we have it again for 2012. In the trade how it works for us is in 2011 the pick is protected up to the 7th pick, if NO gets the 7th or higher the traded pick moves to the next year until we get to use it or 2015 hits and we never used it; in which case we are given 2 second round picks. So potentially the move was to shed roster space and J.Bay's $4 million contract.

hey hg: Nate has talked about an 8-9 man rotation before, but he usually ends up with a 10-man rotation. following this trade and the return of our bigs, Dante has the opportunity to back up Nicolas at his natural position of sf. i know you're still high on Wesley, but a couple good pre-season games isn't enough to sell this girl to the scenario that he is the savior of the team. he can prove me wrong, but he's yet to do so.

I thought one of the missions over summer was to make it so Roy didnt have to slide over to Pg?
I mean i understand what youre saying and all, im just asking if that was one of the objectives.
Armon is going to have a lot of responsibility, and if comes down to someone to pin the loss on i have a feeling poor armon might get it, due to the fact that he has a huge responsibility now.

I think at the start AJ will take a similar role Bayless did at the start of last season, being given 5 minutes a game or sometimes more. I can see Dre getting more minutes than last season and Roy, Fernandez and Matthews splitting time especially with McMillan's offense that doesn't really need a true point guard. I just can't see Armon being the full-fledged back-up with McMillan's history of having a tight leash on rookies.

I really like Wesley for his defense, non stop competitiveness, fearlessness and willingness to always get better. His offense in the pre season was just a bonus and hopefully he can continue to polish his game, but I like him so far. Not as a savior but I like him. I think if Aldridge continues to improve (or wanting to improve) he could be the biggest impact on our team getting to the next level. And if Oden can stay healthy we could have a really good team contending for the championship soon. Even with Andre Miller. I just hope Nate plays AJ a lot this year so he can absorb more and learn more faster so hopefully he will be competent at his position sooner.

I agree.  The word 'potential' has been used and abused with regard to this team for too long now.  Roy's knees aren't getting any younger.  Sorry ladies, but I have to throw Nic into the Aldridge/Oden category as well.  The time is now.  The minutes will be there.  Show me!

When Armon worked out in summer camp, you could see this kid knew the right way to play. Very strong defense, pass first point guard. He has size, which Bayless lacked, he has hustle and is not afraid to get after it "smartly" on the defensive side. I really liked JBay's bulldog mentality, but with the way the game is ref'd nowdays, it caused him to many fouls to stay on the floor and produce. Armon pretty much passed Mill's in summer camp and now in the preseason games, you can see how much smoother the offense runs when he is out there as a point guard. The only thing I feared was his lack of offense, but I think he will work hard on that and come thru just fine. Can't wait to cheer him on when he comes out on the floor Tueseday and proves he belongs there!!!! GO BLAZERS!!!
