There is a snippet further along in this David Aldridge nba.com article about Portland's interest in not only Brendan Haywood, but Caron Butler.

In world of trade talk, chatter rarely lives up to hype
"(Don't discount Portland, either. While much has been made of the Blazers' pursuit of Washington center Brendan Haywood, the Blazers have just as much, if not more, interest in Butler, and are willing to put $3 milliion in cash toward a deal -- which certainly interests the Wizards. But Portland's refusal to put any of its young players other than Martell Webster in any potential deal puts it on the outside looking in. As has been reported, the Wizards want either Nicholas Batum -- no chance -- or Rudy Fernandez -- not likely, as he is a favorite of many inside the Blazers' braintrust. The Lakers would also love to repatriate Butler with Kobe Bryant, who would love to have him. But L.A. doesn't have the expiring contract/young player assets necessary to get seriously involved.)"

If that is the case, then this will be a slow trading season for Portland. You can't get talent like Butler or Haywood without giving up talent back. I really hope we don't try to hang onto every single young talent we have, otherwise we'll end up like the Chicago Bulls. Use a couple assets and package them to get a proven player.
I understand not wanting to deal Nico, but would Rudy seriously even be happy here if we dealt for Caron? His minutes would plummet and he wants/needs to play.

While we don't know the entire story about what Washington wanted for Caron, it would be very disheartening to find out we wouldn't part with Rudy and change for Butler. Butler is already a proven All-Star that we could only hope Rudy turns out to be as good as.

Haywood's the most coveted player near this season's trade deadline. He's good, he's huge, and he's cheap. But if we have to trade Rudy for him, then NO WAY! Haywood is not worth giving our future recipient of the NBA's 6th man award to Washington.

Butler would be a nice addition but how many Fs do we need? Heywood would be priority over Butler regardless if we can squeeze him into the deal with Heywood. Batum, no way and right now has a bigger upside at SF than Rudy has at SG. I would be ok with trading Rudy but not for Butler and a replacement center for the rest of the season.

Who would you trade Rudy for then?
Butler is still only 29, an All-Star, a proven 2nd scoring option, and would give us a nice rotation 1-3.
    Miller/Bayless
    Roy/
    Butler/Batum

Rudy only makes 1.1 Million so we would have to throw in other pieces, so we wouldn't be overloaded in in the forward category.

Also, do not forget we have Viktor Claver overseas ready to come over in a year or two, so if we deal a couple young pieces, we have others waiting in the wings.

I hate to break your bubble Mari, but Blake and another player (who isn't one of our younger assets [Webster,Outlaw,Howard, for example]) are not bringing back a good center in return. Centers are a premium so you have to give up talent.
We all like Rudy, but he got upset at the thought of Hedo coming here. Do you really think he wants to be Roy's backup forever?

You don't brake it ! I know that is impossible to get good center for blake, I only try to show the problem and solution in short opinion. I am not good at writing, better to me is talking, which is the best way to understand another man. I am not fanatic fan of Rudy , When for him Portland get very good player who change team for better I will be first who say YES !because I am a fan of Trail Blazers . I wonder what do You think about Marcin Gortat , Orlando player from Poland. He is hard-worker and I think he is good in defence and more efective in offence from Przybilla and Do You think he is the rigth guy for PTB.
I am a fan from Poland far away from Portland so forgive me when my opinions are not udrestand.
like I write some days ago I admire this website and try to be a good fan :)
    Go Blazers !

Mari- You're writing is fine, no worries at all :)
I would love Gortat, but Orlando is smart and keeping him as an insurance policy if Dwight gets into foul trouble or gets hurt for a period of time. Either we get Haywood or Dalembert or we wait till June and draft another big man.

and something else, I dont' think that Rudy could play in starting 5 for 82 games, thera are still big differnce between european basketball and nba and not always super payers from Europe could make big career in nba.
Someone write that he is good candidate for 6-th man and  I agree with this.

I am all for going after Butler along with Haywood.  There has been varying pieces out there discussed to make the numbers work.  The one I see the most is Outlaw, Blake, Webster and Rudy.  While I probably in the end would bite on that trade, I would be very leery of our 3 point shooting going forward.  Caron is a 30% career 3 point shooter that is shooting less than that this year.  I would prefer to find another piece to substitute for at least one of the shooters going out.

sign Iggy for 8-9M, Batum at the two, and Wesley off the bench! Draft Steven Adams (who loves contact, grew up playing rug-bee). Sounds NICE!

Im not impressed with Gortat. Everyone wants him but he seems mediorcre to me. He is the most realistic option since all it would take is the 10th pick, but I think he is old and declining.
