It really isn't as easy as trading him to get another center. Centers are a rare breed in today's NBA and his value is as low as it ever will be, so there is no point in trading him. Also, it looked like it was just a bone break of the knee cap, which would be a silver lining if there is one. Breaks heal much better and quicker than torn ligaments or tears. Also, I don't think a broken patella will hinder his athleticism once he returns. Personally, I am more concerned about his mental psyche once he returns, because it has got to be so difficult to come back time after time after time, but he will.
We must also not forget about Big Z from Cleveland who missed his first 3-4 seasons with foot problems, but then has been pretty much injury free the rest of his career. Grant Hill was in and out of the lineup for much of the late 90's/early 00's and now is a very serviceable starter and healthy.
Hopefully Greg's body is just going through a rough patch but will be fully matured after this injury and he can just enjoy life out on the basketball court.

Seriously, what's the point in posting that? Any true Blazer fan is behind Greg 100% and all we have now to do is hope he can recover. He is still very young and is obviously a big man, so hopefully he has fully grown into his body and this will be the end of the injuries. Like I said in my other post, Big Z had 3 straight years of foot problems and now he's perfectly healthy.

bklick79 You hate to say it because it's stupid,  let's call every big man that gets hurt Sam Bowie,.... Yao, Bynam, Illgauskas, Canby, Walton, and so on.  You obviously don't watch enough basketball to understand how tough it is for centers in this league it is very physical and as center you are the goalie that takes a lot of beatings.  The last sentence you wrote clearly shows how insensitive you are to injuries and doubt you are a fan of basketball.  Go get some friends so you don't have to go to the Blazer sites to attract attention.  What a complete fool you made of yourself.  Hope you get hurt soon.

It's a very sad case for Oden.  I was very uspet when I saw him go down, not because I am a Blazer fan, but because I'm an Oden fan.  He is a great dude and for him to have to suffer yet another setback takes the front seat to me being upset about what it will do to the Blazers.  Last year, for the majority of the season anyway, Oden wasn't a huge factor and we went to the first round of the playoffs (and could have gone further).  Yes, I know that Outlaw, Batum and Rudy are out right now too, but it's still VERY early in the season.  We haven't even gotten close to the All-Star break yet so all it would take is a 10 game winning streak or even winning six out of a 10 game span.  It's like we call these guys Champion contenders when they win, but then say they all need to be traded when the start to lose a bit.  With the core players we have now we are alright.  Oden will come back from this and next year he will produce.  The only thing that his injury will do is set back his all-star status until maybe two years from now.  Keep in mind though, he is only 21.

The ONLY positive that came from this is that is happened this year and not down the road. This year was already shaping up to being a little underwhelming with the injuries to Batum, Travis, Mills, and JP..but hopefully Greg has shook all the injury bugs out of his body and will be ready to go in the fall of 2010.
Also, good that is was a clean break and no tears or ligament damage was done.

I'm inclined to agree that while this does blow goat nuts as far as the rest of the season's concerned, this team is used to playing without Greg if need be. The prob, in my opinion, is that Pryz hasn't been able to step up to the ability that Greg has in such a short time, and Juwon ain't no spring chicken at 36.

So my question, in consideration of the recent loss at N.Y., is how do we as a team function on an 8 to 9 man rotation, when most of the positions are having to be double, and in the case of L.A., triple covered? What I mean is, considering the fact that players are now gonna have to pull double, and in some cases, triple duty at different positions (to use L.A. as an example, having him in at the 5, 3, and 4, especially at the 5 in case Juwon can't fill the role defensively and Pryz gets into foul trouble), how do you compensate for the losses?

Do you change the basis of your offense to a more perimeter look, and play 1-3-1 zone defense? How long can that hold up? Maybe I'm missing something in the middle of all of this, but until we can get JP, Outlaw, and Batum back in the lineup, things are gonna be hard-pressed for us to get a win.

For anyone reading this, what's your take?
I am a fan of Greg Oden getting healthy and shutting up his critics. Period.

Surprised that no one has pointed out that Nene had this exact same injury, and he's pretty much a stud for Denver, with nowhere near the physical gifts that Oden has. He'll recover and come back to build upon the dominance he started this year. I don't think he'll be the next Shaq or Ewing necessarily, but certainly not the next Sam Bowie.

Greg will be fine. Im willing to bet money on it. He's young, and he's hungry to play. There's been a lot of young big men to have knee problems and turn out fine, and i would really like to stop hearing all the references to a certain player we picked over jordan.  If you don't know who i'm talking about....google. it.

Yeah, he was tripping with that Scottie Pippen reference. Nowhere as good as him, BUUUTTT, I think he can be, if he plays like a man. In Euroleague, you are taught more about finesse, and the fundamentals. He needs to put a little more muscle on, ...

Thanks Siccolo, not to knock on Bosh. I think if he was the number one option he would go back to being a beast. I miss making jokes about him playing for the RAPTORS. He is a great player.
