Joel is opting out of the FIBA games to work on running, shot blocking and rebounding. Can his dedication take him to the next level and surplant TRob as the backup PF?

Well this thread went straight to dvd...guess that shows the interest Joel generates here. I like the guy and think he needed more minutes last season to make the leap. TRob is exciting, an athletic freak and rebounds like a madman but doesn't have much scoring touch yet. Definitely a dunker. Joel has to somehow find his edge. This is going to be a really interesting training camp push for minutes. I know everyone has crowned TRob the second option behind LA, including me initially but after some consideration, I think it's closer than I used to. I think CJ is going to get more competition than he anticipated as well. That's another thread. I am impressed with Joel's offseason regimine at the very least. He could become what Stotts predicted when we signed him, the next Nick Collison. TRob is pretty raw but has JJ mojo at least from his summer league showing. Freeland played great for the Stampede with guys he's never played with and without practice there. His exit interview voiced frustration over his lack of minutes and his need for defensive improvement.

The short answer is no.  TReb is a far superior athlete.  If Freeland wants minutes, he'll need to earn them on the defensive end.  He wasn't there last year.  Better court awareness than Leonard, but smaller frame.  It's gonna take some time, but I think he is capable of improving faster than Leonard.

I like who he compared himself to...Nick Collison. If he even gets a morsel of Nicks game its a plus.

Agree with Fanatic here.  Only by default will Joel find himself backing LA...default meaning Robinson deciding he would rather earn the remainder of his contract renewing his relationship with the pine.  Though TRob is not in a contract year per se, he may be out of chances should he not make the most of his opportunity here in our fair city of roses.  Motivation should not be a problem.

I too give the edge to TRob and hope he surpasses my expectations but sometimes there are players that just have that tireless work ethic and earn it. Collison, Najera, Kurt Thomas, Haslem, and on. I agree he'll have to earn it and it won't be practicing against Luke Babbit. Worst case scenario is that he becomes a much better 3rd string PF and provides solid injury or foul trouble insurance for the guys ahead of him. My gut feeling is that if he improves defensively, crashes the boards  the thing he needs most is confidence and maybe a spiked mohawk and a nasty snarl. If that doesn't do it, hope he watches a lot of old Tom Chambers film

@ riverman, pls no mohawks, gimmicks, etc.; T-Rob has it all within himself already to "be[come] all that he can be[come]" ;)  This league already has 1 Chris Anderson too many :(  We don't need an attention seeking clown; thankfully, what WE'VE GOT IS a Blue-Collar Beast! :)  T-Rob might already have a snarl but I know he's already got a good war face/fierce roar! ;)

@ commontongue, AGREED! :)  I want THAT MORE over the same player AND others! ;p  Here's a lil' more of THAT!

Also, I think for T-Rob to make it to the next level & REALLY max out his career, he'll need a mentor.  T-Rob, Lopez, & Joel need tutelage from this master!

Freeland plays an important role on this team next season. He's a 3rd string player for 2 different positions. So If any of our 4 main bigs misses some games, Freeland will get a lot of reps. We may even see him start a game or 2.

He needs to bulk up. The NBA is loaded with big strong guys. He's got to push people around a bit to get inside and get the dirty work done. His jumper is way off. He needs to loosen up out there. His jumpers are close in but on the baseline. Those are a bit more difficult to nail down, as you don't have the backboard there to help you line up your shot.
Put it on the deck and take a better angle at the hoop, lift some weights, get some core strength, Frteeland can really help this team out when called upon. Like a said, he just needs to get comfortable out there. Hopefully some of the misfires we saw last season were merely rookie butterflies. He's a 2 year NBA vet now. So he can expect even more criticism for bad play. He's got to play above expectations.

Freeland is not your typical rookie. He has experience playing in Europe and saw what the elite athletes of the NBA are like at last years Olympics. He needs to play!!!! I like the idea of missing the FIBA games to work on his game, but I feel he would be much better served actually spending time on the court!! He needs to get minutes on the court in pressure situations, guarding bigs in the post and working on double teams in the pick n roll.

No doubting his potential. If he bulks up a bit and finds an identity as either a defensive stopper or rebounder,m he will have some part to play on our roster. His major issue is that he now has 2 solid guys ahead of him for that backup frontcourt spot. TRob is a beast on the boards and has the athleticism to play big minutes and contribute immediately. Leonard gives us more size and since adding that 3pt shot (of which I am still quite sceptical) has a different dimension offensively. For his current $3million contract, Freeland is certainly proving to be a poor pickup. He's nowhere near the dud I pictured him to be after his first few appearances but he isn't anything close to an NBA backup YET... Id give him this year to prove himself. Not before the trade deadline, but atleast until the end of the season to see if he is worth his salt. If we get 6-8 good minutes out of him per night and something like 60% shooting on his rare shot attempts with 2-3 rebounds, I think he would have proven his worth somewhat. But he has a loooooooong way to go before he surplants TRob or Leonard as the 2nd string anything.

Yeah after his first season, I would much rather give minutes to thomas robinson. He isn working hard though and I appreciate his effort.

What I love about Stotts is he knows if someone deserves minutes or not. I remember wondering why freeland wasn't getting minutes lsat season, then I saw him play and realized he wasn't ready for nba playtime.

Stotts knows we are trying to win every game so he is gonna only put players who deserve minute on under court.

He's a vet now, no more rookie excuses. And for heaven's sakes, use the glass big man. That's why they painted big white stripes on it, and bolted it behind the rim. It's there for buckets.

Well I posted this back in August and I think I was on to something with this thread. First preseason game I thought Joel outplayed TRob against Griffin. Was really impressed with Joels defense. TRob hasn't beaten Joel yet for minutes.

Preseason, Joel has looked great! His all around game maybe more consistant than TRobs so far. TRob seems to be a guy who can light it up or get in quick foul trouble. Griffin shot 1-7 from the field with Joel guarding him. Not bad.

Freeland is by far the oldest of the group but he is also playing the most consistent right now. Man had Leonard's defense been terrible.

Freeland has been playing great for sure, has shown glimpses of his post game, and mid range jumper as well. Just wanna say though, Griffin shot so bad because for some reason he kept taking looooong twos.

I think the guys defending Griffin had something to do with him bricking long twos. Griffin is overrated in my book.

Griffin is overrated in everyone's books save Clippers fans and other bandwagoners. If Byron Mullens and Blake Griffin want to keep taking jumpers, why not just let them.

Really pleased that we got the win tonight against a Clippers team that had their starters out on the floor for 30 minutes each. Great effort from Lopez and Barton on the glass and I'm really pleased to see how well Freeland is coming on. If he keeps this up we'll have a tough time rotating our bigs because they're all sooooo good.

I'll be the first to admit I was calling for Joel's head after his poor rookie season. I expected more from him as he ad played a few years in Europe and was a bit older than your average rookie. He's really been playing well and I'm quite glad he has been playing so well. T-Rob and Leonard had better step it up if the want to be the primary backups at PF an C.
