Greg Jayne of The Columbian, who is leaving the sports desk to become the paper's editorial editor, writes that 2013 is just another example of the Portland Trail Blazers' inability to compete for free agents.

As I prepare to take my talents to The Columbian's Editorial department in a couple weeks, I am struck by a surprising reality of my 13 years as this paper's Sports editor. Throughout that time, the Portland Trail Blazers have never won a playoff series. Not a single one.

    ...

Portland had planned on having almost $12 million available for free agents, but most of that now has gone to players who were available because their previous teams were looking to dump salary.

It's like picking up a couch that somebody leaves on the curb. The price might be great, but there's a reason it is being left on the side of the road.

Which brings us to the ugly truth about the Blazers - Portland will never, ever, ever be able to sign a marquee free agent. The city isn't big enough and the franchise history isn't rich enough to land a big-name free agent.

This is a case of " Im glad you're quitting your day job " . This guy and many alleged Blazers fans dont get it. You dont go after free agents who dont want to be here, you go after Basketball players who realize that this isnt just a business, its your job. If the NBA was in the business of fining players for breach of contract due to lack of performance,50% of these guys would be unemployed. The Pacific NW is for grown folk with a laid back demeanor and a great work ethic. If you're looking for the big city life, wait until you retire. But while you're here, do your damn job. In doing so, you'll become familiar with why we are such a loyal fanbase. We are a one horse town when it comes to sports so we take our Blazers franchise very seriously. To me there is only one guy on this team with a sense of self entitlement and thats Batum. Every other guy on our squad is a grinder who made it here through adversity. If i counted how many of our guys who have a chip on their shoulder for one reason or another the count would be 14 of 15 on our roster. Im looking forward to a very motivated and highly competitive team this year. As for Greg Jayne, how dare you share the same last name as our beloved Dwight. Put an egg in your shoe and beat it.
I am a fan of our new roster playing with and for eachother.

Wow. A never with two evers? Yeah, he can go work somewhere else. I'd rather have Wesley than approximately 29 other starting SGs. I'd rather have LaMarcus than approximately 29 other PFs. I very well might prefer Damian to the 29 other starting PGs, MAYBE. My point being I'm not looking for a marquee team. I want to see the Blazers build it right and win it right. I really appreciate the success of Memphis and Indiana. They're excellent teams that didn't have to go after Dwight, Melo, LeBron, or CP3 to get there. They prove that there's a little bit of that old-school team ball left in the NBA.

San Antonio has been the blueprint for team success for over a decade. Thats what i wish for our squad. Keep the core, add some more.

I would agree that San Antonio would be the best model for a team to improve, but it's hard to follow their lead when they have a psychic on their scouting staff. Only one member of their core was a lottery pick (Duncan). Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili, and Kawahi Leonard were all late first-rounders or early second-rounders. They have struck more draft gold than anyone in NBA history, so I would rather model after Memphis or Indiana, building through a balanced combination of draft, trades, and free agency.

Also, NOBODY is Popovich, so even someone like Stotts with the exact same San Antonio roster wouldn't have made it to the finals this year.

Either way, I get your point. Have a core and fill the roster with guys that fit the system. It's the best model for longevity for sure.

San Antonio also had the best coach and best PF of all time to build around. Duncan was the ultimate 2 way player. LA is great but not near Duncan's old level.

This year I think the best approach was to go low key and fill multiple needs considering how bad our bench was last year. However, I do love the idea of chasing a marquee free agent provided they are a good fit.

Nail on the head, Cmeese. Marquee player + good fit. That's the most common route that works out. I get the feeling Dame is that player, though. Somewhat like Paul George in Indiana. It didn't have to be a free agent, but having that go-to star player is very helpful. It depends on who works these next couple years and definitely depends on LaMarcus's decisions at the end of his contract.

I think this guy is missing the point tremendously. Our bench was probably one of the worst in the league and one of the main reasons we couldn't hold a lead. I'm rather content with our starting 5, even if we didn't get the big man we had hoped for in the end. Lets also address the fact that we had $12 million to work with this free agency. Is that a good chunk of change? Yes it is. Would that bring in a lot of guys who would make a big difference in the grand scheme of things? No. Like I just said, a lot of our problems came from our benches inability to play. We wouldn't even be able to sign Al Jefferson with that amount of money and our bench woes would still exist. So if he thinks our goal was to blow all of our cash on one superstar and bring no one else onboard, he's playing a bit too much NBA 2k13.

Listen folks, getting beat down by most every team in the league the last 2 seasons, will have negative effects towards the outlook of our Blazer team. It's not trolling, it's not shame, being a frustrated Blazer follower is a natural emotion from gettin' your butt kicked time and time again.

We haven't seen this team play. Blazers made a lot of moves. More then I thought they would. We can't really say anything about this squad until the ball drops.

I found a lot of positives last season from the starting core, sure the bench lost a lot of games but also we had a lot of come from behind wins and beat some of the top teams in the NBA including the worst beatdown the Spurs have ever had in their homecourt. I think bad press just gets a lot of internet hits for these writers much more than the team deserves. When we beat the Lakers in our season opener in LA the headlines were, the Lakers lose or why did the Lakers lose instead of the Blazers beat the Lakers! Typically the Blazers always go under the radar in the press but many local writers have milked the doomsday slant far too long. There's a sense of instant gratification or nothing coming at this team from many directions. I don't buy any of it. We came from 18 down with less than 5 minutes to play and won the game....how about remembering some of those moments from last season? Without the season we had, our rookies from last year would not have the experience they'll have going into this season. That was worth getting into the lottery this summer.

It's one thing to acknowledge that we haven't been good the past few years. It's another thing to go after the franchise for not being able to get a marquee player when in reality we don't need such a move right now. We needed a bench and at $12 million for the offseason, I think we did pretty dang good. We didn't just need one or two quality bench players, we almost needed a new bench. Like riverman just stated, the Blazers don't get credit when credit is deserved. Though I'm sure Dwight Howard could be won over for $12 million right? :)
