I think it's a solid team. We have legit 2 deep. I am booking it, first round exit this year, deep run next year.

CJ Watson is a great 3 point shooter, but we needed someone who can legitimately run an offence, and that is earl watson. We have more than enough shooters (Dame, CJ, Wes, Nico, Crabbe, Dorell).

Earl Watson was who I wanted way back before we signed Ronnie Price. That's a good veteran pick up. He'll make everyone better when he's on the floor and he'll teach the young guards quite a bit about running the point. Tough defender too.

I'm quite pleased with our new acquisitions. They're all players we needed in their positions and guys like Robinson and McCollum will prove to be solid pick ups in the next few years. I especially like the move for Wright. He's long, a good shooter and was good off the benc in Philly last year. I think Claver and Freeland will be confined to garbage time minutes and possibly D-League assignments.

The only question I have is whether Robin Lopez will help Aldridge in the front court. He has a fairly low rebound rate and doesn't get too much work done down low. Not a guy I'd use in the 4th quarter of close games. But overall, I am extremely pleased that we picked up more experienced players and got guys who will be solid backups to our core.

Of players who played 20% of their teams minutes last season only 4 players had a worse simple rating than Earl Watson, Daniel Gibson, James Johnson, Byron Mullens, and Dequan Jones. His PER versus opponent is -10.3, this is a dude that got torched often last year.

Offense production decreased with him on the court, the teams defense got worse with him on the court, effective FG% went down, effective FG% allowed went up, and the number of turnovers per 48 rose for 13 with him off the court to 17 with him on.

If Earl Watson plays big minutes this year we can guarantee ourselves a spot outside the playoffs.

Seeing as how bad our backcourt defense was last year, Watson is an upgrade defensively. I don't care if he doesn't score because he doesn't look to score. He has a motor and can run an offense efficiently. He's a way better defender than Damian at this pt in his career as were Price and Maynor. I really hope Damian improves defensively going into next season. It's a hole in his game that hopefully Payton will help him with. Earl Watson is a backup. If we went over the cap to sign a point guard I'd have brought back Dre but he won't play for the money we had to spend. I think it was a solid bench move. I think CJ McCullem will be the 2nd string point guard so Watson is our 3rd string option. This team is built for speed. I think we'll see a fair share of small ball and see a huge increase in guard rebounding. We don't really know what the rookies will bring and we needed this mix of young vets on the bench

Lillard gave up by far the lowest EFG% of all our starters so was his defense really that bad.

A lot of it has to do with not being near your assignment when he breezes in for a layup or goes backdoor pulling your bigs off their assignment. Lillard's defensive gaps were pretty wide. He knows that. So were Leonard's and in all fairness, they were both rookies. He does enough to make up for it but in his exit interviews he adamantly states his need to improve defensively. I'm confident he will and Payton will be a great mentor

I don't see Watson getting many minutes at all. I'm a little worried if CJ isn't ready to play PG, then we'll have to play Watson. I'll admit though, I haven't seen much of Watson the past couple years. I always thought he was defensive minded like a Ronnie Price. Hopefully he'll do better running the offense then Price did.

I know Lillard needs help on defense that much is obvious but he did somethings well, closing out on three point shooters was one of them, since EFG% is adjusted to give three pointers their proper weight by closing out on those shooters and giving up less three pointers than the other wings it allowed Lillard to post a much better EFG% against.

Yes he got beaten last year and needs to improve but considering he was a rookie on a bad defensive team coming from a small college conference with little NBA talent to compete against I would argue his defense was better than expected.

He's only going to get better. And now with Lopez behind him wiping away defensive mistakes,we're going to have the ability to dictate oponnent direction. Either into L.A. or Lopez or wings like Batum or Wright. Get that shhhhhot outta here.

We need a better defensive system in place before Lillard can improve much. Payton can teach him defensive positioning, how to move his feet, how to fight through picks but if the team defense does not improve Lillard no matter what he learned from Payton will continue to get beat.

I was doing some math and comparing Asik to Lopez. I would still say Asik is the better all-around player, but strictly in terms of protecting the rim I was shocked at the results.

I'll Just break it down the best I can:

Lopez: 128 blks; 2.9 blks per 48 mins; 167 pfs; 3.8 pfs per 48 mins.

Asik: 87 blks; 1.7 blks per 48 mins; 223 pfs; 4.3 pfs per 48 mins.

Let's say at least 3 of 4 fouls was stopping an inside shot (possibly a high estimate I know), that means Lopez stopped 5.7 inside shots per 48 minutes with only half resulting in free throws for the other team. While Asik stopped only 5.0 inside shots per 48 minutes with 3.3 of them resulting in opponent's free throws.

This of course, is only based on recorded statistics and doesn't factor in contested shots without fouls or the sheer intimidation factor through defensive presence.

So, yes, I would love to have Asik's 11.7 rebounds over Lopez's 5.6, but we did all beg for a rim protector and I think it's safe to say we got one.

And it's probably worth mentioning that Lopez scored 4.7 more points per 48 minutes as well. Again this doesn't factor in intangibles like drawing a double team, post-passing, hustle points, etc. But I wouldn't say the disparity between the two is quite as large as people have implied. Perhaps Asik just surprised more people and got more attention this year.

Nice breakdown analysis Pickett. Plus you mention intangibles, and two that I think give Lopez a little more of an edge (for our roster), or at the very least should be taken into consideration, would be pick-n-roll ability and boxing out. From watching tape, I'd say Lopez has a slight edge in both.

Just curious and can't remember offhand, how many years did we sign Lopez to? I know he has that trade kicker but doesn't that also mean his price will be slightly less for next year?

I know, I could look this up myself but I just woke up and feeling lazy.

I'm not sure about the trade kicker, but he has 2 years left on his deal.

Does the trade kicker affect the cap, though? As long as the kicker doesn't eat up cap space, I think Paul Allen can afford it. ;)

A little pessimistic there. I have a different take. Earl Watson played with the bench unit, so of course everything is going to be lower. When he was on the court, he was on the court with other bench players. So it only stands to reason that all the stats you mentioned would be lower with him and the bench unit in than when the starters are in. Another thing, this guy will be our third string pg. We got him to mentor and perhaps teach a little defense. He will play a maximum of 12 minutes a game. Barring injury

I think Cmeese watches some games... but doesn't understand what he's watching or why things happen, and then goes and looks up stats afterward to  support whatever he'd like to point the finger at.  Nothing personal.  There justu happens to be a large sample size to draw that conclusion from.

Lillard was thrown to the wolfs.  He had little to no help getting the ball up the court, avoiding the traps or facilitating out of them, or getting a freakin break for water.  He has and will continue to focus his off-season improving his defense.  I have little doubt we will see a significant improvement in the teams defense AND Lillard's D.

The thing that gets lost in all this "Hickson/Asik > D League > R.Lopes" thinking is rebounding rate, and understanding that offensive rebounds are a much better indicator of rebounding prowess than are defensive rebounds.

I broke this all out in a blog last season, after seeing an aritical that looked at the theory of "stealing rebounds from teamates" and who actually improves team rebounding.  Clearly Lopez lacks in total rebounds, however he excells in offensive rebounding.  I'm sure I'll break it down again once he gets a few games under his belt.  And then we can all talk about whether he was a good pick up again.

I always think of steals as defensive rebounds. When you add the steals to a players rebounds, it really shows how they've gotten stops. Nic got a lot of steals last season. So at the end of all this we've given up :

    Sasha

    Nolan

    Luke

    Jared

    Elliot

    JJ

    Eric

for: Lopez, Robinson, Watson, McCullum, Watson, Wright, Crabbe and maybe Harris....I'll take it!
