Let me try this now cmeese...

    First what this team needs:

    1. Defense and more defense

    2. Toughness we have a bunch of soft guys on this team right now we need some thugs

    3. Another ball handler

    4. A deep bench

    5. Shooters

Step One: Trade LaMarcus Aldridge he is a good player and an all-star but he is also our only real trade asset. Right now LA is probably the 5th best PF in the league. He is behind Love, Bosh, Griffin, and Duncan. I have him just above Nowitzki, Lee and Ibaka. This is tough because on any given night LA can be flat unguardable, especially when he goes to work in the post, unfortunately LA has started shooting more long range jumpers attempting more shots from 16-23 feet than anywhere on the court.

If I am the Blazers you need a piece that can be a potential all-star fairly quickly and a player likely to stay long term. My choice is Derrick Favors. The kid is only 21 and has the potential to become an all-NBA type defender. He is already an excellent rebounder and his offense will only improve with playing time.

Portland trades Lamarcus Aldridge to Utah in exchange for Derrick Favors and the #14 pick in the 2013 NBA draft.

We open up around 8 million in cap space with the trade and get an additional pick as well as a viable replacement for LA it seems logical to me. LA fits perfectly with Kanter and the Jazz have the space to absorb LA's reasonable contract.

    More to come...

no way, we are going to keep aldridge. all we need to sign is o'neal, jack, alan anderson, allen, and mills. we draft dieng, seth curry, kenny kadji, allen crabbe if we can. then we are going to the  playoff. we also waive freeland.

Tony Allen is not leaving the Grizzlies to come to that mess of a team. O'neal is too damn old. Alan Anderson is a scrub. Jarret Jack would be a nice pick up as he adds some toughness and another ball handler but his cost is too high with the teams current payroll. Dieng is another project at center, which we already have in Leonard, Seth Curry, Kenny Kadji and Allen Crabbe are d-league filler.  Assuming Leonard plays decent, and O'Neal stays healthy you make the playoffs and then get run in the first round. That team is no threat to the Heat, Thunder, Grizzlies or any of the leagues top teams.

Then what? Trade Favors after 5 years for someone younger with potential to be an all star? Then trade that guy as well? Lamarcus was working in a new system, that's why he took so many jumpers. Because Coach told him to. And he is third best behind a healthy Love and Duncan. Way better than Griffin and definitely Bosh.

I am a fan of Raymond Felton. Haha, seriously though I'm a fan of Batum's Lobs and JJ's Slams.

Bosh is better defender than Aldridge he is also a better mid range shooter. Griffin's numbers are down because of the system.

Bosh in Toronto was better than Lamarcus

I would take Lamarcus over Bosh right now

Bosh is a horrible defender, Lamarcus is one of the better defenders in the league.

Man you guys really need to read that article be it certainly does not suggest that LA is a good defender at all. I am sure you got that idea because some idiot on Blazers Edge saw LA's name in the 5 spot on one of the defensive variables looked at.

LA was 5th in their survey for FG% against on close shots when he was 5 feet from the hoop. But that is one variable, add the other percentages and you get a different story for example Bosh gave up allowed a man to score 49.7% of the time when he was within 5 feet of the rim and the shooter was within 9 feet of the basket. LA gave up only 43.9%, however, he also gave up 38.2% from mid range and a terrible 46.9% from 3 point range.

Bosh was 32.8% and 40.4% in the same categories which if all 3 percentages are added up Bosh's opponents shot 12% lower over the three catagories.

    LA 134.8

    Bosh 122.9

    Sanders 101.2

    Gasol 117.7

    Hibbert 106.8

So as you can see just because LA was good in one category does not make him a great defender.

If you look at the percentage of shots where the defender is with 5 feet of the shooter

LA is only within 5 feet of his man 34.6% of the time.

    Bosh 37.1%

    Sanders 52.2%

    Gasol 40.7%

    Hibbert 47%

FG% Allowed when within 5 feet

    LA 44.1%

    Bosh 45.5%

    Sanders 34.9%

    Gasol 43.6%

    Hibbert 38.7%

LA gives up a low percentage when he is within 5 feet of the basket and the shooter is within 9 feet of the basket. He gave up significantly worse percentages from Mid Range and 3pt range, which suggests he does a poor job closing out on shooters and playing help defense.

LA allows a lower FG% than Bosh when he is within 5ft of the shooter he is near the bottom of the list when it comes to getting within 5ft of the shooter.

I wish people would actually read articles before they post stuff, this is exactly the kind of crap that Blazers edge does all the time and I cannot stand it.

Billy I am glad you set the record straight on that article. I just laughed when I saw it posted on Blazers Edge.

I like the idea of getting Favors but I think and I figured you would too after looking at Sanders incredible defensive numbers that he should be the target. If it becomes possible to get Sanders without trading Lillard or Aldridge perfect but I imagine we do not have the resources to pull it off.

I would give up Batum, Leonard, Kostas. P, Claver, Barton, Freeland and any of our picks for Sanders.

Someone posted it on this message board itself I think and I reposted it. And yes Billy, you are absolutely right, I did not see that, I just saw him at 5 and his 'close' percentage and rushed to put in on here. Still, help defence of the entire Blazer team is horrible. No one rotates or anything, it's just atrocious so It's not really LMA's fault.

Also, Dwight Howard's number are worse than LMA at close, same at mid, marginally better at 3 (Where D12 apparently defends more).

And LMA was within 5 feet of his man 58.8 percent of the time, not 34.6. He is also better at defending in close than Marc Gasol who is the reigning DPOY. We have very good individual defenders, just disgusting team D.

I am a fan of Raymond Felton. Haha, seriously though I'm a fan of Batum's Lobs and JJ's Slams.

Shots faced when defender was close to shooter LMA within 1ft .7% within 3ft 10.9% within 5ft 23%

Add those together and you get 34.6% which is why he was 85th out of 93.

Gasol got the benefit of making everyone around him better. While I agree non of his numbers in this survey really stood out his teams defense rating was 102.2 with him on the bench and a awesome 95.4 with him on the court.

Personally I think he needs to be a better rebounder than he was to win the award but he made his team a lot better and that counts for something.

I am going to stop talking numbers and percentages now, makes my brain hurt. I can say, plain and simple, and a lot of people will agree with me, LMA is and above average one on one defender. Team defence aside, he is above average to good.

I would agree LMA is a decent defender but his help defense and team defense needs a lot of work. It is in these areas that Bosh really separates himself from LMA and it is because of that he is a better player than LMA despite not putting the same numbers as LMA.

That's because Bosh has a good defensive coach. Also, Bosh is a more effective mid range shooter than LMA, because he only takes good wide open shots. I think if he was the number one option and took as many shots as LMA, or had to set up his own shot, no way he shoots 52%.

I swear something about Bosh with his dreads was so intimidating, it seemed like he was so much bulkier and bigger when he had them. Now he looks like a ostirch

Both pretty bad but Id rather look like a Raptor and a Ostrich

Here is the thing LA has never shot better than 43% from 16-23 feet posting 39% 40% twice and 41% three times.

Bosh's career worst from there was 40% once and 41% once he also shot 43% twice 45% 47% and 53%.

Bosh has also never averaged over 17 FGA per game, which is what LA has attempted in the last 3 seasons including a career high 17.8. Yet he posted 22.6, 22.3, 22.7 and 24.0 PPG averages while in Toronto why because he got good post position, took shots around the basket and went to the foul line 8 times a game. LA's career high was 5.5.

Bosh was in Toronto and still is a better player than LMA.

Know what Cmeese, I never realized it, but yes. Bosh was a better player than LMA. We can't say whether he is now though, as he is a third option. I think LMA is a better player now.

It does make a harder comparison but Bosh's willingness to play center all year, and be a third wheel after dominating the first 4 years of his career is pretty impressive.

I still believe Bosh is the better player but that is not a slight on LA.

Yeah, that truly impressed me and I have a lot of respect for the man. To go from one of the best PF's to a third option shows his character. And he might be better, but like you said, not a slight on LMA.

LA seems like he just wants to win. Im sure he would love to take Bosh's  place on the Heat. When Roy and Aldridge was here I think he wanted to Number 1. But he would love to win a ring w/ LeBron
