Who is the best shooting guard available to us in the draft ? Let me put it in another way, who is the sg with the best chance of being ROY ? Weigh in.
I am a fan of our new roster playing with and for eachother.

Cj Mccollum, Kentavious Caldwell Pope, Jammal Franklin are the best SGs that will be there at 10.

Shabazz Mohammed, Ben Mclemore and Victor Oldipo are all very good SGs but will likely be gone

Would you guys rather trade our 10th and 2 second rounders to maybe phoenix for their 2014 first rounder? This years draft is considered one of the weakest drafts in recent memory. And next years draft is very deep, having players like andrew wiggins, jabari parker, arron gordon, marcus smart, julius randle, etc. suns might want to speed up their rebuilding process by having 2 top 10 picks, but theyll most likely still be a top 5 lottery team, which means we have a possibility of getting a top 5 pick in next years deep draft pool if we did a trade like this.

But if not, id like to get cj mccollum. He will be a good 6th man, and i really believe he could score 10pts next year off our bench.

Muhammad or McClemore would have the best chance at SG to win ROY. Oladipo will be good but he won't demand the ball like either of them.

I agree shooting guards like McClemore and Shabazz will probably score more but I think 5-7 years down the line Oladipo will be the better or best sg out of this class.

Oladipo is the guy who I see having the most immediate impact on the defensive end for whoever gets him in the draft. But the best SG in this draft is Mclemore. I think we'll take CJ McCollum with the 10th pick and he would be the best fit for us at this stage. A better shooter than Barton and he could help take pressure off Lillard in the half court.

I kind of like the idea of trading away this years pick to Phoenix along with one or two other picks and a bad contract maybe. We don't need more young talent in the coming season. And if we could get a good lottery pick in next years draft it would be good. Our young core is decent but now we need some veterans with a champions mentality. A trade to get Hamilton from the bulls or Billups from the clippers (I know that's a stretch) could be a great move to find a mentor for our young backcourt players like Lillard and Barton...

If he can stay healthy, his outside shooting and winning mentality will come in handy. I've said repeatedly, we need a good veteran presence around our core and if Rip is open to playing for us, then why not?

I agree with cmeese. Hamilton as a Bull is on the bench and they need scoring. He's injury prone and has lost his explosion. He's not cheap either. I don't see him contributing much to the Blazers. If you want bench scoring, Nate Robinson is a free agent. He'll win you some games but won't stop anybody defensively since he's about 4' tall.

Rip Hamilton is over. I am not a fan of hot and cold players, so I don't like Nate Robinson and JR Smith. They will win a few games for you, but how many more will they lose? I heard a lot of people saying Melo came up clutch in game six with the mid range shot and three, but if he had actually played well, they wouldn't be in a position where they needed a clutch shot. That gets overlooked with guys like Nate and JR.

I am a fan of Raymond Felton. Haha, seriously though I'm a fan of Batum's Lobs and JJ's Slams.

Consistency is important but the key is adding value on nights your struggling. Butler struggled tonight but he still had 4 ast, 5 reb and played tough defense on Deron. That is the kind of effort needed when the shots are not falling. Robinson and JR as dynamic as they can be on offense do not offer that.

Exactly. And JR is a (rhymes with goosh). The only reason Robinson plays the point guard, is because he's too short to play SG. Also he looks like a black Wolverine which is kinda weird.

Haha, Robinson is a pocket dynamo, but what he gives you on offense, he completely lacks on the defensive end.

We don't really need a point guard, we need a SG who can handle the all a little in the half court sets. So with that said, who do we go after? Jack is a point guard. Patty Mills is a point guard too. Tony Allen is a great defender and he attacks the basket because of his poor jumper. Rand Foye and Tony Allen are the guys I would most like to get. But if we could get Marcus Thornton from the Kings, it might be a master stroke.

The Kings need an upgrade desperately and we could draw them into a deal for Thornton. I'm not sure about how the salaries will line up but if we could get Thornton and get rid of Babbitt, Smith and Leonard as a young piece they could use we might just get him. Thornton usually comes off the bench so there won't be much of an adjustment. He's on 6'4" so he could be used to guard opposition point guards while Batum does some of the ball handling. He shoots it at about 37% from deep and above 80% from the free throw line.

The real issue is his $8million salary for next year.

The 2 guard behind Wes is something we need to address. Currently we've got Barton there under contract. Sasha did a good job before his injury and is an underrated defender but free agent 2 guards are plentiful this offseason. Tyreke Evans or Matt Barnes would be good pickups. I think Tony Allen will not come here though he'd be good. Kevin Martin is really expensive. Ray Allen is a free agent this summer and old as he is he still is a great player and not that expensive. Miami will probably resign him. Jarret Jack has stated he wants to return to Golden State.  If Paul leaves the Clips they'll probably keep Bledsoe. Bledsoe is a good combo guard.

Honestly, out of the entire bench, I liked Pavlovic the best. He had veteran game, just didn't get enough time to show it. Little things like driving and dishing, the little fakes here and there, the defensive positioning. I liked watching him. And I think he kinda looks like Rick from The Walking Dead.

    @Caitlin

    Great Idea on Marcus Thornton!!

I would LOVE to see him in a Blazer uniform. Kings would probably want to go with Tryeke as their guard of the future and can't afford Thornton and Evans.

A deal centered around the 10th pick, 2 Second Rounders, and Joel Freeland

Kings would save a bunch of money by only taking back Joels 3 million salary for THornton 8 million and would get a promising prospect at #10.

We would lose some cap space BUT will now have: Another ball handler to relieve help out Damian, a 6th man that can drop 20.

With 6 million left we can sign Dalembert, Sign Papnikolau, and use our exception to sign Maynor

    Lillard/Maynor

    Wes/Thorton

    Batum/Papanikolau/Barton

    Lamarcus/Claver

    Dalembert/Leonard

    @Siccolo

Is it really a good idea to trade all our picks? I think we still need a rookie or 2 on the roster to provide young legs and a possible spark during the season. And rookie contracts are cheaper than most others. If we get Thornton we will need to get rid of Hickson via a sign and trade... I don't think we can just let him walk. We might be able to trade him to Phoenix for one of their picks for next year and one of their bad contracts. They have the cap space and after the season that JJ had, will probably jump at the chance to get him and the 10th pick.

Marcus Thorton is better than anyone you will get at the 10th spot. There might be 1-2 exceptions

I think it would be best to let JJ walk. We can only sign and trade him to a team that is above the cap and teams above the cap are not willing to give up any really good assets for Hickson.

I think Thorton is worth not having the any draft picks in this draft, hopefully Sacramento dosent.

If there's one rookie I'm interested in next year for the Blazers it'll be Kostas Papanikolaou. 22 years old, 6'8, 230 lb SF who has a complete game and is a lights out shooter. He does everything well. Check him out on youtube and you'll see the guy has a great motor, hustles, rebounds, runs, great handle, great passer. I don't want to sign a guy out of college that's a project next season. Neil will trade the picks for a center somehow , just my opinion

I saw the Kostas tapes, but isn't the European 3-PT line like 2-3 feet shorter? And Nate Robinson is only offence, and even that he isn't very good at. Too inconsistent. He can't play D and he isn't a real passer.

I say no Nate, Wilson Chandler (can light it up w/ scoring but a bit streaky sometimes; he brings good defense all the time though; the $ he's paid is right for what he brings) is my 1st choice (Thorton my 2nd, especially because of his price tag; although... if the deal Siccolo put out there got it done... I'd say do THAT deal all day long!  I'm not giving up on Joel yet BUT IF he can bring us Thorton or some1 really good that we need.... I wish u luck Joel whereva u land ;), & bring Papanikolaou in :)

Thornton is sure to be a good pick up. He isn't like any of the picks we are likely to get because he is already a good scorer and is use to coming off the bench. He might even get a starting spot and Wes could come off the bench like Ginobli. Wes was good all year, but his body eventually tired after all the effort he'd been putting in. If he comes off the bench he would provide our 2nd unit with some defense and leadership. And he does shoot 40% from the 3 point line.

There is also the option of trading Freeland and the 10th pick for Thornton and giving up one of the Greeks and Babbitt for Jason Thompson. He could also give us some much needed inside presence. His game is close to the hoop and I doubt his salary would be much of an issue.

If I'm honest, I do like Asik. I think he's good. But the amount of money it will take to get him is a little too much for my liking. We should go after Dalembert at the 5 and get Thornton and Jason Thompson in a trade for our 10th pick plus Freeland and either Babbitt or Pavlovic (I quite like his game, but he'd just be filling a vet minimum spot on the payroll). We could use our exception to sign back Maynor and we could pull together something attractive for the Suns 2014 1st round pick.

But more along the lines of this thread, I think we need to get Thornton!!! Sign one of the Greeks this season and that should fill the roster enough to give us a deep enough team for Stotts to work with.

Yes I can Blazer, you could say that about any nationality in the NBA ...I'm not a fan of these stereotypes. Better to criticize a player by his game than his nationality. I don't care if players are European, African, South American, Asian, North American, Australian or any place. Judge a player by his game and I think Kostas has a good skillset. If you don't think so, that's fine but don't judge the man by his ethnic background.

Same goes for college. I'll take Victor Claver over Luke Babbit anyday. Deron Williams played in europe...Kobe Bryant was raised in Italy where his dad played. Didn't make Kobe a weaker player to learn the game in europe. I was in China and watched the Chinese national team destroy the Nike all american team that had Alonzo Mourning, Glen Rice and a lot of american players. They beat them by making shots, freethrows and sharing the ball. There are good athletes everywhere. Everywhere the basket is 10 ft off the ground. The 3 pt shot is different in college too. Joel Freeland is learning the game here, a rookie in the NBA. He had some good efforts for us.

Agreed we are either rebuilding or trying to contend no in between you want young players that need to learn the game you are rebuilding. You want players that are proven NBA contributors you are trying to contend. We have one of each right now in Barton and Matthews. I personally think adding in a quality vet would be the best solution. With that in mind Tony Allen seems like the best option, which I have been asking for years now.

And the vet who we go after should be someone who brings that winning mentality and that drive to be a contender. Oneal will be that guy in the front court. Former all star and he was the centre piece of the Pacers team that made their run in the east. I don't think Tony Allen will come to Portland now that he and Memphis have made the 2nd round again. He would want to stay and try again next season.

So if we can't get him, we need another good defensive SG who isn't still on his rookie contract. Danny Green might be a good pick up. We could also try to get Ronnie brewer. He's not getting game time in OKC and he was a really good defender when he played for the bulls. He was a key part of their 2nd unit with Gibson and Asik.

I said earlier that i wouldnt mind us going after Timofey Mosgov. Heres what he had to say about not getting any run in the Denver series:

Mozgov stated that his current role in Denver does not suit him. About playing no minutes in the series against Golden State: "It is hard to take. But how could I make a difference? Quarreling with Karl? Complaining about the coach? All I could do was wait for a chance. I was completely healthy and eager to fight. However, Karl continued to trust others. I love this club, this city. But of course, the current role does not suit me. And I'm not going to continue to get paid for sitting on the bench.

@ commontongue, I've mentioned that I'd like to get Mosgov in the past & he's another STILL near the top of my list :)  He's currently making $3.1 million; hopefully, we could snag him for ~ that (sign him to a 4yr. deal), shouldn't b a problem ;)

W/ the Pacers how they do things/have been for a while, I'd b shocked if Granger lasts beyond the next trade deadline during next season.  Granger will b moved during this summer in some deal that gives Indy a good sg.  The only thing that might stop a deal/has stopped deals in the past, is the size of Granger's contract (~$13 million/2yr. left).
