We had a thread like this a while back that claimed if a male athlete came out he would be blacklisted. Well it has happened and no one seems to care.

Here is the article link http://www.cbssports.com/nba/blog/eye-on-basketball/22166934/jason-collins-comes-out-as-gay-1st-player-in-major-us-sport-to-do-so

Now that we have settled the debate that a players sexuality does not matter to fans can we just focus on how they preform on the court, or field.

If you do not follow Jason Collins on twitter you should check out his feed so much positive support from his fellow NBA mates.

It makes me proud. Gay or straight should not matter and it finally looks like it does not at least in the NBA. Finally.

You know, I think there was still an undertone of homophobia in professional sports until very recently. Remember a season or two ago when Kobe got into some PR trouble because he used a slur against homosexual people? And there was the campaign either during or after that episode with Grant Hill, Jared Dudley, and a few others that was against using the word "gay" as an insult.

I actually think the NBA is at the forefront of spreading awareness about heterosexism, and it's fantastic that the sports world is finally catching up with the progressive world on this. I still think traditional "American" sports like baseball and football might be slower to accept people of different sexual orientations, but the odds are that hundreds of professional athletes have been Gay over the years and had to keep it a secret. I'm glad players are now more able to be open about who they are without it negatively affecting their profession.

I have homosexual friends that use the terms "gay" or "fa***^" as an insult because they don't put being homosexual as the same as what those words now mean.  Each person is different I know, but Kobe probably didn't mean it as a knock on the homosexual community.... Speaking of Kobe, as much as I despise him, I respect him a lot for his tweet in support on JC, a big name like his will change a lot of opinions and he put himself on the line a little because some fans may not like him for his support

I remember the Tim Hardaway homophobic episode years ago and he ended up lobbying for the gay cause after being slammed for his blatant rants about gays. I thought it was the first NBA situation addressing this issue. Then John Amaechi came out after he retired. If making his preferences public gave Jason relief of any sort, good for him.

All true, seems positive, but he is a free agent, lets see if he still has a job next season, they we'll truly know for sure what its all about. Most Player arent gonna say anything negative publicly on twitter or facebook or whatever because of the negativity that would come along with that, but what happens in the locker room, and if a team will actually sign him, those things are yet to be known

Him not having a job might just be related to him being a terrible player but we will see.

I don't care if he is gay, straight, or purple, he is pretty awful. But good for him and I'm glad people are being so accepting.

I mean, he has been able to land a job in the most competitive basketball league in the world for over a decade. NBD, we just have different definitions of awful and terrible.

Compared to 7'0 Centers in the league, the good ones, he barely looks playable.

That said, if he was trash the NBA would have thrown him out years ago. I can show you several players who it has chucked to the curb (And yes, even 7 footers). He must do something well enough to be in the league that long. And if it's the mere fact that he stands that tall, than I don't see a reason why a team wouldn't pick him up next year.

According to Barkley Collins is a smart defender which is why he has had a long career. Sounds like a Jared Jeffries to me.

He is terrible when compared to other NBA talent, obviously anyone who makes it there is talented but he is not compared to other players.

that and the fact that he isn't really gonna have teams lining up to sign him unless they want an end of the bench player this off season for cheap
