Steve Aschburner of NBA.com reports that Minnesota Timberwolves president David Kahn will not return for the 2013-14 season and that ex-NBA coach Flip Saunders will likely replace him.

Former NBA head coach Flip Saunders is expected to return to the Minnesota Timberwolves as the team's next president of basketball operations, NBA.com has learned.

Saunders, 58, has been negotiating a contract that, with option years, could run through the 2017-18 season and could be worth more than $9 million over the full five years, according to league sources who requested anonymity because they weren't authorized to discuss the hiring.

The move, which could become official as soon as next week, would end David Kahn‘s controversial tenure after four seasons and an 89-223 record during which the Timberwolves' failure to reach the playoffs stretched to nine consecutive seasons. Kahn's contract includes a team option for 2013-14 that will not be exercised.

Kahn, a former sportswriter for The Oregonian, has been involved in a fair number of stories with the Portland Trail Blazers during his tenure in Minnesota.

He traded the draft rights to Luke Babbitt for Martell Webster, but later sought a settlement because Webster missed time due to back injuries, a process that took years to resolve. Kahn was also involved in an extended, albeit unsucessful, courtship of Blazers forward Nicolas Batum in restricted free agency last year. He also signed former Blazers guard Brandon Roy out of unofficial retirement last summer, only to see Roy undergo an additional knee surgery this season.

Kahn also hired former Blazers coach Rick Adelman, former Blazers assistant coach Bill Bayno and former Blazers sideline reporter Terry Porter, and signed and/or traded for a number of former Blazers players, including Dante Cunningham, Chris Johnson, and Anthony Tolliver.

He forced Olshey into signing a massive contact with an ungodly trade kicker. Cost Allen around 30 million in lost insurance money by signing Roy. Stuck us with the terrible Luke Babbitt. I would say he won every interaction with Portland he just sucked elsewhere.

The guy is a walking double double. I'd probably call him more fragile than soft.

He can pass, but can't score. His defence is a joke, he's just good at taking charges and getting steals. Love has no low post game, he forces shots in after offensive boards, his 3 pt shot isn't very reliable, he shot 21% this year and his mid range is decent. HOW DID HE AVERAGE 26 per game?

I am a fan of Raymond Felton. Haha, seriously though I'm a fan of Batum's Lobs and JJ's Slams.

Simple he doesn't pass the ball he averages 2 assists a game but I guess when your the only main scoring opinion why pass the media may be impressed with this guy and he may put up monster number but, he's another one of those players that throws the organization under bus instead of taking responsibility I get that it the team job to get players to help him but, there are time where you have to look in the mirror and take responsibility and I haven't seen that from him he just waiting until the final year on his contract and he's out of there even if they make the playoffs he going to LaLaland.

Hawes will be a hot commodity by the trade deadline, I would think the sixers could find a better offer.

However, I do believe Mo Williams could have somewhat of  a high trade value. Olshey needs to make a deal to get a big man while we...

Yeah and now Blazers have zero interest in Bynum. I really thought he was worth the small risk. If anything he would be at the end of our bench and we use him as a sub. Hopefully we do make some type of trade for a quality back up center. Right no...
