Trail Blazers (33-38) Vs. Jazz (36-36)

    What To Watch For

    Rip City Rally Cry
After losing by 18 to the Brooklyn Nets, the Trail Blazers fell 3 games back of the Lakers for the 8th seed out West. While the postseason is looking bleak, a lot of teams ahead of Portland in the standings still have to come to the Rose Garden. One of those teams is the Utah Jazz and the Blazers face off against their longtime rivals twice in a four-day span, starting Friday night in the Rose City. A loss to Utah could all but kill any playoff dreams for this young squad, so it will be important to see how the Trail Blazers come out of the gates. They were outscored 37-17 against Brooklyn which really set the tone for the entire game. Portland usually plays Utah tough at home, leading the all-time series 55-27, including a 105-99 win back on February 2nd. If the Trail Blazers can hold a lead after the first 12 minutes and win every loose ball battle early on, they should be able to ride the crowd's energy to victory.

    Utah's Bigs
Like Brooklyn, Utah poses matchup problems up front for the Trail Blazers. Brook Lopez went off for 28 points on 12-22 shooting so the Blazers must find a way to slow down Utah's quartet of post players: Al Jefferson, Paul Milsap, Enis Kanter (Did not travel with the team due to an apparent shoulder injury), and Derrick Favors. While Lopez was able to score, he wasn't the decided factor in the outcome. Reggie Evans bullied his way to an astounding 26 rebounds. So it all starts on the glass Friday. Not only will Portland have to win the rebound battle, but they must own the paint. Utah ranks 9th in the NBA in paint buckets, averaging 42.9 a night compared to Portland's 37.2 (28th in the League). If the Trail Blazers can win both categories, they'll walk away with another home victory over the Jazz.

Kanter hurt his shoulder in the Phoenix game tonight. We probably won't see him in action. But we're hoping to see more aggressive defense by Portland. No more bad double teams! Mano E Mano

Not until we are out of the playoff chase. For now, we should keep playing our starters.

fatigues setting in there not gonna be able to manage a winning streak on tired legs and theres no sense @ this point to over play em and risk a major injury and I don't think utah or dallas will lose enough games for us to slip past them

Agreed BLASER Dallas has found their mojo and I not concerned with Utah since they suck on the road so the only team I see us passing is them and as long as Refs are officiating the Lakers will make the playoffs.

Well, looks like you get your wish. Lamarcus hurt his ankle, and JJ was sick, both missed practice on Thursday. Questionable for the game.

At this point in the season I like seeing Joel and Victor getting extended minutes. I think Joel could be the first bench player to get a double double if he's on the court enough. I'm no longer worried about the playoffs although we could possibly get the 8th seed if teams have losing streaks and we win most of the remaining games.

This wasn't a win for Utah, though Milsap and Jefferson not surprisingly killed Portland.  This was a mismanaged game, and a loss on Stotts and the Blazers.  Corbin gambled with Milsap because he had to, and the Blazers didn't make him pay.  Milsap played every second of the waining minutes tonight with 5 fouls, much of the time foolishly doubling the ball high defensively.  As unbelievable as unforgiveable.  Recognition by the coaching staff and players, particularly the Blazer backcourt, never evident.  If not for Milsap's contributions late, the Rose Garden faithful would be hitting the Taco Bell drive thru and celebrating a victory.

Also couldn't help but notice neither Dame nor Maynor could buy a call in the paint tonight.  On the positive, Claver and Leonard gave good minutes

We led throughout. Even midway into the 4th. SO FRUSTRATING. Still, I loved watching Claver. And Meyers did okay offensively, and no one really thought he could out rebound the Jazz Bigs anyway. Think HE will be the first blazer to get a double. Got 9 rebounds on a few occasions already. Still, our Achilles Heel was Lillard's defence. He couldn't stop Mo Williams.

Meyers had one rebound in the whole game, Victor and Joel had 4 boards each. 7'1 you should get more than 1 rebound in a game as a starter.

Blaser- I think by now we now what our bench can really do.

Meyers had 3 reobunds Riverman but I agree his rebounding problems is a big issue. He is young but hopefully he doesnt develop to those offensive bigmen that can rebound, defend but can score. I mean he he could if he was maybe a back up center, but he CAN be our COTF but he needs some work.

But he is learning, I just checked his stats and over the past 5 games - In 27 Mins a game he averaging 9pts 5 Rebs on 54%Fg shooting

He has had 9 rebounds twice over this 5 games so he has proven he has the abillity to hit the boards just needs to do it consistently

not really half the time stotts plays 2-3 players off the bench and the rest just sit and rot away imo they need to get out there and play we got nothing to lose @ this point in the season and theres no point in over playing our starters and risking a major injury were not making the playoffs

Yeah I wouldnt have a problem playing them in order to keep or better our draft pick.

But we know what we are getting out of Babbit, Sasha, Jeffries, and Nolan

Barton and Freeland could have a case on why they deserve more minutes. I think when we are statistically out of the playoff race then Stotts will let them play but Stotts is such a boss he wont give up.

I was reading the Oregonion at my internship it had a GREAT article on Stotts mindset about the playoffs

Yeah and now Blazers have zero interest in Bynum. I really thought he was worth the small risk. If anything he would be at the end of our bench and we use him as a sub. Hopefully we do make some type of trade for a quality back up center. Right no...
