Point Guard Crops Boasts Few Stars, But Plenty Of Solid Pros - David Aldridge | NBA.com

There's been a sea change at the game's most important position.

It is no longer enough for an NBA point guard to be a creator, getting open shots for his teammates, only looking for his shot if there are no other options available.

Now, with guards liberated from hand-checking and just about any defensive impediments to the basket, and colleges thriving with guard-friendly offenses like the dribble-drive, NBA teams look for guards who can score just as dutifully as they once beat the bushes for floor generals. It is no fluke that the first point guard taken first in the last five NBA Drafts -- Damian Lillard (2012), Irving (2011), John Wall (2010), Tyreke Evans (2009) and Derrick Rose (2008) -- could all get to the basket effortlessly.

But there is no consensus at the top of the Big Board.

What The Scouts Are Saying About Trey Burke

Burke is currently tied for second in the nation in assist-turnover ratio (3.11), just behind North Carolina's Dexter Strickland, and Burke is 11th nationally in assists (6.7 per game). But he led all Big 10 guards in scoring at 18.8 per game, averaged 20.2 points in Big 10 games and was the conference's Player of the Year. He also was named Sports Illustrated National Player of the Year.

Said a Northwest Division personnel man: "He's an extremely hard worker, gym rat, has a competitive spirit that he wants to get better, wants to be one of the better point guards. And he worked at it. (Michigan Coach John) Beilein gave the ball and let him make his mistakes, and he grew in confidence."

"If Burke was 6-foot-2, 6-foot-3, we wouldn't be having this conversation," a Southeast Division executive said. "These are the same questions as when Chris Paul was coming out. [Burke]'s a very clever basketball player. You watch him play, and you've got to go back to when Chris was coming out of college ... Burke already knows how to play screen and roll better than most college kids. And he must have been watching film on Chris. When [Burke] gets around the first guy, he immediately gets in front of that guy and keeps that guy on his back. He keeps his dribble alive and surveys what he sees. Those little things, those are hard to teach. He does it time and time again."

    But size still matters.

What The Scouts Saying About Marcus Smart

Smart was the Associated Press Big 12 Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year -- only the third player in that conference to win both honors in the same season (Kevin Durant and Michael Beasley did it last). He was named first team All-America by The Sporting News and is second in the country in steals (3.0), behind only Oakland's Duke Mondy.

"Coaches are going to love him," an Atlantic Division executive said. "I don't get overwhelmed by his talent but I can see where he's going to be a good player. And coaches are going to love his size ... to me this kid brings so much more to the table than Kendall Marshall. The only thing he doesn't have is the floor vision. Great body, defends the hell out of you, tough as nails."

Smart is a jack-of-all-trades guard, one who can defend as well as pass. He oozes intangibles that make NBA types believe he could run a team full of grown men right away. Many liken him to a more athletic Andre Miller.

"When he was in high school, I watched him a lot," said a college coach whose team played Oklahoma State this season. "He's not Jason Kidd, not the passer Jason was, but he's every bit the winner, and maybe more. I saw him make Shabazz [Muhammad, the blue-chip recruit who went to UCLA this season] absolutely quit. Besides Forte [guard Phil Forte, who joined Smart at Oklahoma State this season], he had a bunch of low Division I guys, and he absolutely made Shabazz's team quit. He's an absolute stud."

With Lillard on board, we definitely don't need to be looking for our Point Guard of the Future, but Eric Maynor is a restricted free agent this summer and if the team decides they want to go another route, there are some solid options at backup point. Personally, I hope they bring Eric back, but there are still some point guards who are big enough to play both guard positions and you can never have enough dribblers on the squad. I wouldn't expect to take a PG in the first round if we do indeed keep our pick (Top 12 Protected to Charlotte), but we do have two 2nd's if we feel there's a player out there who would be a solid 4th/5th guard in the rotation.

idk I like picking up cj mccollum he wouldn't play very minutes @ the 1 but he's a combo gaurd who can score and I think if we retain maynor a bench back court of maynor and mccollum could be pretty solid

While Carter Williams has had a good tourney I would only want Trey Burke or Marcus Smart to join the team although McCollum could be a dynamic bench scorer for this team.

i like trey burke, but i don't him to take over damian career unless we want to make a 2 point guard line up. he seem poise to be the next CP3, but i want mccollum because he is gonna be the next lillard on this team. i want to sign a starting sf so batum can move to sg and put mcollum and wesley as a scoring punch off the bench. probably 35 point combined every night  would be awesome

I would not mind at all seeing Burke and Lillard in a 2 guard line up.

I really appriciate DHawes22 posting the game threads.  I don't always respond, but I read them.

But I don't get this "sticky."  Why is Portland looking to draft a PG?  Let's make a crazy leap now that Portland keeps their draft spot... another rookie PG?  Please explain how that in any way, shape, or form, enhances Llillard.  Crickets.

The reason for the sticky I assume is Dustin will be posting the other positions eventually and then people can look and see the top 10 from each position and talk about who they want to draft.

We don't need a PG. In Nolan Smith we have now bad experience about that missing Faried. And also Portland has Lillard and Maynor. McGollum would be good or maybe draft a PF behind Aldridge.

Could we move on from this sticky and replace it with a petition to rid the Rose Garden of chalupas.  I think I gained 5lbs just typing chalupa.  Oh no, 10 lbs!!!

We got the best point. There's no doubt about it.
People will be all like Trey Burke this, and Trey Burke that,
Trey Burke hit me with a wiffle ball bat.

But I think we'll find out right quick, that CJ McCollum got skipped by way too many teams. We're all anxious to see how much talent and savvy CJ can bring to the Rose Garden. And road trips too. Got to represent.
I am a fan of multiple All-Stars on the Blazers roster this season!

Yeah and now Blazers have zero interest in Bynum. I really thought he was worth the small risk. If anything he would be at the end of our bench and we use him as a sub. Hopefully we do make some type of trade for a quality back up center. Right no...
