Trail Blazers (26-30) Vs. Nuggets (36-22)

    What To Watch For

    Bench Production
Back on January 15th, the Trail Blazers lost an overtime heart-breaker to the Nuggets, 115-111. Normally, when all five starters have solid nights, the team finds a way to get the W, but Denver was able to match our first unit's production by having three players score 20+ points, leaving the game to be decided by the reserves. Denver's second unit outscored their counterparts, 28-12, proving to be the difference maker in a four-point, overtime game. Although fortunes could be changing for the Blazer bench with the acquisition of Eric Maynor. In their victory over the Celtics Sunday night, the bench didn't put up the biggest numbers -- only adding in 11 points -- but they never let the game get out of hand. Boston was unable to take advantage when LaMarcus Aldridge had to grab pine after picking up his third foul with nine minutes left to play in the first-half. Victor Claver was especially impressive, grabbing 10 rebounds, scoring 4 points and picking up 2 steals in under 20 minutes of action. If the reserves can come in and continue to maintain the rhythm and pace of the game, Portland should be fine on their home court, in which they are an astounding 59-19 against the Nuggets all-time in Portland.

    Double-Trouble Hickson
JJ Hickson has been playing like a man possessed since the All-Star break, racking up double-doubles in each of the team's first three games, giving him 30 for the season -- 4th most in the entire NBA. And JJ had one of his stronger games the last time these two teams met, as he went 7-8 from the field for 19 points, grabbed 13 board and even swatted 2 shots. The battle under the boards will be key as Denver possesses one of the league's best paint players as well, in Kenneth Faried.Faried played JJ to a standstill, going for 21 and 11 himself, but during the first matchup of the season in the Rose City, Faried was held to just 6 points, on 3-10 shooting, and 8 rebounds. Hickson on the other hand, had yet another monster performance against the Nuggets' frontcourt, as he went off for 18 points and 18 rebounds.

Easier said than done. You have to match Denvers intensity and speed to even be in the same building. We cant always count on Wesley's heroics to keep bailing us out either. It starts with Dame. He has to read defenses faster and making quicker decisions with the rock. I think his shot will return against Denver.

^Agree CT.  Heard Hall Of Fame nominee Gary Payton say yesterday he will be working with Lillard on his slide (D) this offseason.  The Glove spoke highly of Portland's budding superstar, citing that his work ethic and desire are why he will continue to improve.  Dame's work ethic is as much the reason for the eruption in the man Dawg cave on draft day as was his obvious talent and tremendous pre-draft workout in Portland.

I wanted Lawson, but now, hindsight being 20/20, am much happier to have Dame.  Lawson's speed and ability to finish thru contact paired with the savy of ex-Blazer Andre Miller is a deadly 1-2 punch.  I agree completely with your assessment.  Match the speed and aggressiveness of Lawson and the hustle, will, and desire of Faried and bask in victory when the horn sounds.  Same 'ol story really, all season.  set an attacking tone early and never back off the gas.  Don't settle for jumpers.  This all starts with #0.

^Footnote...Gary Payton is the only PG in NBA history to have won the NBA Defensive Player Of The Year award.  Not a bad tutor me thinks.

Outstanding tutor. I felt like we should have reached out to Patrick Ewing as our Bigs coach.

The Nuggets on the 2nd night of back-to-back. Even with their energy and drive, if we jump on them early and play our pace, we can really come out with a good win.

If JJ can out hustle Faried and Wes can knock down some early shots, it will open up the whole game for LA and Dame to take over late on.

Do not rely on the bench!!!!!

Ahhhhh yes, the ever present " IF ". When you play a squad like Denver we cant afford any "if's ". We have to hit them in their mouth early and often. Tastefully done of course.. The predictable starting five of Denver doesnt worry me as much as the talented cats they have coming off the bench. Wilson Chandler is a handful. Corey Brewer has had some spectacular games of the bench. Dre' Miller is still crafty with the rock. And JAVALE ! MCGEEEEE!! { in my Shaq voice } Our bench has to give me something. Double digits in something, anything from two off the bench and we win this easily. Earlier i watched the Blazers practice video and saw Meyers Leonard interviewing Casey. Casey told Meyers to take it into Denvers chest. Its going to take that to beat Denver. We need to put a body on them.Im talking hard Contact.Box out. If they get an offensive rebound the lesson for doing so should be so severe that they wont be  in a hurry to get another one. I need to see more Rip in Rip City !!!!

No such thing as a good loss.  If ever there were...this game would qualify.  Leonard had a breakout game, and on the eve of his 21st birthday.  In the big picture, Leonard's development is FAR and away more important to this team's future than any one game.  Dame had the stroke going again, battling Lawson punch for punch, like two heavyweights.  Good fight tonight guys.

LA had a decent game but will someone tell him to go to the basket instead settling for the fade away shot.

19 turnovers is brutal but the number that is even worse 72 points in the paint. Lawson and Iggy got inside at will last night. The only thing that saved this game from being completely on sided was 13 missed Denver FTS and 10 made Portland 3's.

That was a terrific back and forth game. Real fun battle to watch. If the Blazers are right there at the end of the game, it shows they're putting in some good work.

@kennyc...earlier in the year, I would have agreed with your criticisms of Aldridge and his unwillingness to do work in the paint.  Now however, my take is different.  I believe it unrealistic to expect LaMarcus to have the motivation now to go down and battle freakish athletes like Iggy in the paint, players playing for something...grown men motivated to the extent of warming up in the Blazer training room prior to the game by doing jumping jacks with 25lb dumbells in both hands.  Canzano witnessed Iggy's warm-up and spoke of it on his show yesterday.  Remember, these guys get paid whether they work hard or not.  One might even say it's intelligent to not risk injury "needlessly", thus possibly shortening a career and the size of your 401K.  Imo...time to play the bench.  You will begin to see frustration now from the starters whom have that competitive gene.  LaMarcus, Wes, and Dame specifically.
