Trail Blazers (23-23) Vs Jazz  (26-21)

    What To Watch For

    Who Replaces Wesley
During the second-half of Portland's 86-77 loss to Utah, Wesley Matthews suffered an ankle injury. Thankfully the X-Rays came back negative, but if Matthews is unable to go Saturday night, who picks up his production? Friday's loss was eerily similar to an earlier loss to Golden State where it seemed like only Damian Lillard could connect from the outside. In that loss in the Bay, Lillard dropped a career-high 37 and his 26 points -- including 13 alone in the 3rd quarter -- were nearly enough to rally Portland from a 17-point second-half deficit. Even though the Trail Blazers' defense clamped down on the Jazz, allowing just 35 points over the final 24 minutes, only one other Trail Blazer recorded double-figures in scoring, LaMarcus Aldridge and it took him 17 shots to score his 16 points. Nicolas Batum also appeared to be favoring his sore wrist, looking to pass at nearly every opportunity, because following through on his shot would aggravate his injury. So who steps up and helps shoulder some of the scoring load?

    Utah's Outside Shooting
While the Jazz shot a sub-par 4-15 from beyond the arc in the win, they will continue to get open looks as the Trail Blazers will most likely double-down on the Utah's bigs, mainly Al Jefferson and Paul Milsap. Utah was able to jump out to a 15-point halftime lead large in part to their dominance down low, doubling up Portland in the paint, 32-16, at the half. This is when Coach Stotts went to the double and it worked. Had the Blazers even shot their average from the floor, they walk out of Salt Lake City as victors. Randy Foye shot the majority of their 3's (3-11) so he could be the X-Factor Saturday. He'll get his looks, and if he's on, it'll be an uphill climb for Rip City as they'll have to pick their poison; Either throw an extra defender to help protect the paint and leave a shooter like Foye open or take your chances defending their bigs with only one defender. If Portland can hold Utah to sub-30% from 3 once again, this time the outcome will be more favorable.

I guest now we see why Freeland and Victor wasn't on the team last year or the year before. I'm not knocking them but when you play with LA and JJ in practice an you should come off the bench better than they do. I feel they should move them and Smith (because he need to play) for Williams ( M.T.) even Babbet.

The starting 5 are starting to look tired, D.L. as a rookie can still go hard, but the rest looked a step slow. Lets hope Our bench takes some pride in being in the NBA and gives us some production, because some of these guys look like they won't be around this league much longer. Yeah I'm talking trash but I think it is totally deserved. Come on Blazers!

Take confident shots. Quit hesitating, and fading, and making things difficult. Be aggressive and stay focused!

This loss is not just on the bench. It was not a back to back and I don't take tired as an excuse from professional athletes. We all know our bench seriously lacks scoring but JJ had 0 rebounds in the first half and all the starters played really poor defense and dug a hole. My pet peeve in the NBA is seeing players brick simple layups. We bricked a lot of them and couldn't finish a fast break most of the night. Lillard had his patented 4th qtr surge but honestly he played poorly for most of the game previous to that. Babbit cannot score with a defender on him, he needs a lot of space to knock down a jumper and well...he's not knocking them down. If the jumper doesn't fall, take it to the rack and maybe get to the line? Millsap and Jefferson just owned us all night long

Thank you JJ another double double and lots of clutch free throws, Damian good job and Nolan you did something tonight too albeit against the terrible Jamal Tinsley but still first actual bench production in a long while

Nice balance from 4 of the 5 starters. Get well soon We$. Nic just one assist from a triple dub. Great win and nice to see home court defended with a division rival in the house. Still, 16 TOs is far too many and remains an area of concern.

    LA  22 points 11 rebounds 2 blocks

    Batum 12 points 10 rebounds 9 assists 1 block

    Lillard 23 points 8 assists

    Hickson 21 points 11 rebounds 1 steal 1 block

         -  9-11 from the free throw line (7-8 in the 4th quarter)

Blazer had more bench points, rebounds, points in the paint, assists, blocks, and shot over 50% from the field and 55% from 3 with holding Utah to 43% and 42% respectively.

The bad:  68% from the free throw line (19-28), 16 turnovers that led to 16 Utah points, and forced only 5 turnovers for 2 Blazer points.

Great win.  Nice to see the bench step up.

Nope to LA he makes 14 million a year to be a 20 10 guy

Batum gets a 3/4's one for a near triple double while playing hurt but the turn overs still annoy me and I wish he would rest that wrist.

Btw LA was 18-11 going 2-6 from the line he contributed but he was not responsible for this win.

Guys stepped up when the opportunity came up! This was encouraging to see. Very important to at least split this back to back with the Jazz and we came to play!

Aldridge's +/- against Utah was +15.  The next best +/- for the Blazers was +7 for Babbit and Smith.

There is not a single player in the entire NBA averaging 20 points and 10 rebounds per game this season.

There is only ONE player in the entire NBA averaging more than 20 points and 9 rebounds per game.  His name is LaMarcus Aldridge.

Technically, no individual is ever responsible for a win.  It's a team game.  If one cannot give credit to LaMarcus, they cannot give credit to anyone else either.  At some point, you just have to ignore people and their biases.
