Trail Blazers (20-21) Vs Pacers (26-16)

    What To Watch For

    Play In The Paint
It's time to go inside and play in the paint. Portland features arguably the best post player in the game, in LaMarcus Aldridge but he's only taking an average of 13.67 shots per game over the last three home games. And neither Cleveland, Milwaukee, or Washington had any post defender capable of giving LA any fits on the low-block. But I've noticed this young Trail Blazers team not only tends to fall in love with the 3-point shot but quick shots, early in the shot clock in general. When the team as a whole is struggling from the field, it's important to take your time, set up the offense, and run it through the post, and then work inside-out. Good things happen in the paint. Either Aldridge will score, get fouled and get into a rhythm at the line, or he can kick it out to open shooters if the double does indeed come.

    3-Point Shooting
Speaking of 3-point shooting, it's been abysmal these past three home games. Portland has shot a combined 24-81 (.296) from downtown. While a lot of those attempts were open looks, our shooters haven't been able to get into much of a shooting rhythm due to the other quick, forced looks they're attempting. There's no problem shooting 30 3's a game, as long as they're open and come from running the offensive sets, but the team as a whole really should lay-off the quick shot. That shot's not going anywhere. We can get that look all game long, so why not set up the play and then shoot it if things start to break down? Portland can take down the hot Pacers if they show offensive discipline and work it inside to LA and he's able to set up his shooters off of the double team. And just like most nights, if the open 3's are falling, the Trail Blazers are a tough out.

I agree that more time per possession needs to be taken offensively.  The one thing I have noticed, and quite possibly a major contributor to the current losing skid, is Stott's inability to counter the oppositions schemes in taking Damian out of the game.  Dame is used to being schemed against, as he was really the only notable offensive threat at WS.  This may be as simple as losening the reins on the kid and whispering in his ear, "go do what you do kid", Idk.  A rocket scientist isn't needed to see that if Portland isn't allowed to set up, their scoring will dip into the 80s and FG% the high 30s/low 40s.  Strike early if the opportunity presents, or set up and get a quality look.

As D makes reference...post scoring.  I'll expand a little and say POST, POST, POST...at BOTH ends of the floor.  This dead horse has been beaten enough.  There's almost nothing left.  LA and JJ in the paint...Dame, Wes, and especially Nic...attack, attack, attack.

Damian need to drive to the basket and one handed posterizes  dunk over roy hibbert and paul george, i would love that. any way, i think that damian need to drive t the basket and draw both LA and Hickson man and throw a ally oop to them for a dunk, so we can set our tempo early and often. that way lillard can lauch a open 3's in the fast break. we need Price to play 14 mins., so LILLARD will only have to play 34 mins. against the pacers. but i am looking forward to Damian dunk
I am a fan of Damian Lilard leading us to a title and MVP to him, LA and MEYERS

Free JJ Hickson poster for the first 10,000 fan at the Rose Garden.  I remember walking around the Memorial Collisium as a kid collecting Blazer posters after the game while they had a mid-court post game talk.  I think I have 100 or more sitting in the garage somewhere.

I think most fans could live with even the worst of the worst mistakes if they were getting all the help they needed from Olshey.  I can't accept his unwilliness, if not inability, to get this team some real help off the bench.

    GREAT WIN!

Played great defensively and scored 100 on a great defensive team!

We only took 2 three point shots in the second half.....

Myers did well this game :)

Jared Jeffries is awesome!! Epic dunk haha

Barton played very reckless but I liked his 19 mins. (8pts 4reb)

    GREAT Game!!

I loved that we actually outscored a team in the paint and that we did not jack up a ton of threes

We outscored them in the paint, outrebounded them on the boards, stifled their offense, and shot 56.4% against the best defensive team in the league, AND that's the worst shooting % they've allowed all season.

What's the biggest change? What factor, besides an obvious decision to play active and aggressive basketball on both ends of the court from the first minute to the last, could have influenced all this?

I think it's because Stotts took away the 3.

I love that DHawes slammed this home in the thread intro, and while I 100% agree with what he said about LaMarcus getting in the paint, and avoiding the rushed shots, I feel like those 2 factors ("use your allstar PF like an allstar PF", and "quality shots beats quantity shots") are fairly obligatory to playing smart basketball, where the 3-point tendencies are more of a conscious decision to favor one way or the other (Sure, some teams will allow more 3's or inside play than the other way around, but we're talking about the Blazer's tendencies, not our opponents).

Last night, I hope I hope I hope that Stotts, and our Blazers as a team, have finally realized where their real offensive strength needs to be anchored; LaMarcus Aldridge, and young, aggressive wing players attacking, and kicking out to our capable long shooters as a secondary. I don't have it in front of me, but I feel like we've been averaging nearly twice as many 3-pt attempts per game as we took last night, and not nearly twice as many fall through the net (2-11 last night, both from Wes I think, and 24-81 over 3 previous games as DHawes said). And Siccolo, you mentioned that we only took 2 3pt attempts in the 2nd half last night, is that true? That's amazing, and seems like a great idea since a tired opponent late in the game is more likely to commit a foul against a driving Blazer than a Blazer sitting on the 3pt line... higher likelihood to notch any points at all, and a good chance to get the same value as the coinflips we've been seeing too much of and too early :) plus a little extra rest while at the line, yadda yadda...

Great game all around, Rip City. I don't think it's a stretch to say that if we can replicate last night's effort and style of game instead of falling back to our 3pt shooting tendencies, we can beat ALOT of the teams in our upcoming schedule. Let's keep it going this Saturday night.

    GO BLAZERS

Last night Lillard played perfectly. He has zero turnovers, 8 assists, and did not jack up a ton of threes. That is how you play basketball.

if we get no.1 pick, i would trade that pick for omer asik and that all. the rockets would probably use that pick for a trade with the lakers since lakers need to get younger
