    Trail Blazers (9-12) Vs. Spurs (18-5)

    What To Watch For

    Run, Run, Run!
    The elder statesmen of the NBA, the San Antonio Spurs, will be playing the Trail Blazers on the second night of a back-to-back. San Antonio must first deal with the Utah Jazz, in Salt Lake City (scheduled for a late 7:30 PM PST start) before traveling to the Rose City. Will Pop rest any starters? I mean, this is another TNT game and he got in trouble for resting his guys the last time he tried to do so on a TNT game. My guess is he won't rest anyone but his core (Duncan, Parker, Ginobili) will play limited minutes. While the Spurs have the more talented roster, the Blazers have the fresher legs as they haven't played since Monday. Portland must take advantage of this schedule and push the tempo at every opportunity, even after made baskets. I'd also like to see the team try to full-court press or at the very least, pick up the ball-handler the entire length of the floor.
    Bench Scoring
    Four points. That's all the Blazer bench mustered during Portland's 112-109 loss to San Antonio back on November 10th at the Rose Garden. There's no doubt the Blazers walk away with a win that night had the bench provided more offensive firepower. Luckily for the Trail Blazers, the reserves have shown signs of life recently and even with Victor Claver and Sasha Pavlovic starting for the injured Wesley Matthews and Nicolas Batum, the bench chipped in 23 points, led by Nolan Smith's 11. Now, Batum and Matthews' status is still undecided for Thursday's game, so the onus will be once again put on the second-unit to come up big. It's also just as important for Portland to quiet the San Antonio bench. During the last meeting, their bench poured in 63 points, with most of the damage coming via Gary Neal and his 27.

    Spurs play Portland a day after a game in Utah.  I'd venture a guess that we may not hear about Spurs starters being sent home, but we may see them on the bench in the Rose Garden all game.

    Agree with Fanatic.  However, don't think for a moment a short-handed Spurs team gives Portland any type of an edge.  San An's reserves nearly beat Miami in Miami, eventually dropping that game 100-105.  The Spurs bench shot 45% from the floor that evening.  If not for an uncharacteristic amount of costly turnovers, this game would have gone the other way.  Put on-ball pressure on Neal, if Parker sits.  The Heat turned him over 7 times in their match-up.  Take care of the ball, rebound and run.  This Blazer team has NOT been doing what was rumored before the start of the season to be it's calling card...RUN.  Without easy buckets in transition, Portland becomes a jumpshooting team, the percentages and outcomes, predictable.

    The Spurs put on a clinic in ball movement and defense. They pass the ball around like a hot potato and it'll be a learning experience for our bench players to try to match them. I thought the Miami-Spurs bench game was 95-90? Damien will be up against Parker for the first time and Parker is playing really well right now. I hope we see more Sasha and Claver in this game. We need to shoot a high percentage and get to the free throw line to beat the Spurs.

    If we're talking about the now infamous game on the 29th, I believe it was a 100-105 loss for the Spur reserves. Scoring over 100 points and shooting 45% from the field are things this Portland team, when completely healthy, struggle to do. Points in the paint and defending the cup have been the two most glaring problems thus far this season in my opinion. This team HAS to run, scoring points in transition, or face some really long nights. Now, we all know, to do that you must first defend then rebound. Shooting a high percentage would be nice, but I just don't see it, especially against a club like SA. Dame must look to push the ball.

    Spurs vs Utah yesterday - lost 96-99 on a last second 3PM by Mo Williams

    Parker 36 min (22pts, 7 ast, 1 to)

    Ginobili  28 min  (8pts, 2-3 3pt, 6 reb, 5 ast, 1 stl, 3 to)

    Duncan 33 min (22pts, 21 reb, 6 blk, 1stl, 1 to, 1 pf) -  1 foul with those stats in 33 min... pretty amazing

    Patty Mills 6 min 3-3 FGM  2-2 3pt  highest +/- of any Spur

    Not gonna lie, I would love me some Patty Mills as our back up PG right now.

    Great Win Great Win!
    Damian just beasted out there in front of the World.

    LA was very dependable. Wish he would get some all star calls but still a great game from him.

    Hickson kept us in it with his hustle. Batum did good too for having a bad back, big 3.

    BABBIT was going IN today!!! Earning himself a roster spot for next season!

    How can Pau Gasol be 5th for Forwards in All-Star voting, and Damian Lillard not even be on the ballot.
    No, hey, listen... the NBA needs to get their priority's right.
    The whole world saw it tonight. Lillard looked like an All-Star, easy.

    They need to do away with All-Star Voting... period.  It's a joke.  Calling someone an All-Star loses it's meaning when you've got Linsanity 3rd in Voting for guards.

     

    As for the game, something stuck out aside from the great job Portland did at forcing turnovers.  The free throw desparity.

     

    At one point the spurs had shot 19 free throws to Portland's 6, and ended 25-12.  Duncan only got 1 foul with 22 rebounds and 6 blocks in Utah (all that contact and 1 foul?).  And again, only 1 foul called on him tonight.  As much as I believe it's a product of being a Spur/All-Star, the Blazers have got to find a way to get to the line.  I saw a lot of no-calls that make me wonder how feasable that is with our young roster of non-superstars.

     

    Regardless, this was a great game.  Everyone contributed.  Lillards and LA with All-Star performances.  JJ with a patented double double.  Batum with 8 assists, and some really clutch plays when we needed them most.  This was a real treat to watch, if not for having to listend to TNT announcers instead of MB and MR.

    "Signature" win of the season thus far imo. The 19 TOs Fanatic referenced, also happens to be the number the reserves had in their loss at Miami November 29th. Coach Pop has his chalkboard material. When Portland shoots 45% from the field, particularly in Garden as they did last night v the Spurs, they're tough.

    While we often disagree I have to agree with you on a few things here. First of all Lin as an all-star is a disgrace and anyone who voted for him because he is Asian is an idiot. 

    Looking at the shot chart it is fairly easy to see why the Blazers had so few free throw attempts. The Blazers has a decent number of points in the paint tonight with 36 but the majority of their shots came from the perimeter including 27 three point attempts.  Additionally, Portland was fairly successful when shooting the ball in the paint, which eliminates a lot of borderline calls. Misses get whistles, the Spurs had a lot of misses in the paint so they got a few more attempts. This team certainly does need to get to the line and the more they force the issue and play aggressive the more calls they will get.

    Indeed tonight was a great win that I did not expect against a tough Spurs team.
