Trail Blazers (2-3) Vs Spurs (4-1)

    What To Watch For

    48 Minutes
In the Trail Blazers' three losses this season (Thunder, Mavericks, Clippers), they haven't been able to play a full 48 minutes of basketball. Whether it was getting out to a slow start against Los Angeles or struggling down the stretch as was the case in OKC and Dallas, Portland has faced an uphill battle more times then I'm sure they've wanted to. What gets them into trouble is relying on the jump shot and poor half-court defense. If the shot isn't falling early against the Spurs, Portland really needs to attack the paint and get to the free-throw line. It's hard enough to beat quality teams like San Antonio when you play a great game, we don't need to be spotting them any points.

    Defensive Matchups & Adjustments
Speaking of defense, it will be interesting to see what Coach Stotts does with Nicolas Batum against the Spurs. After Chris Paul was able to orchestrate the Clippers' offense magnificently in the first-half, Coach Stotts switched things up in the second-half, putting the taller and longer Batum on CP3 which seemed to stall the LA offense enough to allow a nearly-improbable comeback to take place. Will Coach start Batum out on Parker or let Lillard try his hands at defending the lightning quick All-Star?

PUT HICKSON AS A 6TH MAN, HE CAN'T SHOOT OR CAN'T HE PASS. MEYERS LEONARD IS BETTER CHOICE AND HE ALREADY SHOWS IT AGAINST CLIPPERS.

On a roster of 15 guys, 12 active in our losses we've had only 3 players shoot the ball well. In our wins we've had 5. JJ can shoot, but he needs to kick out when he doesn't have a good shot instead of forcing shots and all our post guys need to learn to use the glass when under the basket. There's just not enough ball movement to the open guy, we're rushing shots and taking 3s to quickly. When we brick layups and 16 ft jumpers, it gets ugly

Your not gonna win many games when your best player a non factor we can't afford LA to have the game he had against the clips but, with starters playing heavy minutes it's bound to happen these next two home game are critical for us to find something off the bench otherwise we are going to have a lot more performances just like the game against the clips.

Of course more bench production is a must for us, and you can just etch that in stone for every game until either the roster changes or someone finds their groove.

Key to this game? Put Nic on Tony Parker. I don't think there's another guy in the league that knows Parker as well as Batum does. Take advantage. Once Parker struggles, the entire team drops a tier.

Also, I'm really anxious to see how the rebounding battle goes between JJ and Blair. Both of them are pure hustle. Should be a fun matchup.

This was actually a good game and we had several chances to win it. Our starters played great across the board and hustled all night. Out of 109 pts though, only 4 came from the bench, not a good number.

Can we get a dang bench?! Freak, even trade for Jimmer Fredette or something. Give us some scoring. I didn't see the game but when the starters are playing so many minutes, injuries are going to pile up soon.

schwabbii, I don't see how we can trade any bench players except Meyers and get any value. The key is to have someone step up and show some trade value before the deadline. Then we can make moves that make sense. I think now it's a coaches problem to solve and they are obviously scrambling to find a combination off the bench that works. In fairness to Price, he's barely played on a court until just recently and he's my pick to step up. Meyers as well

As far as minutes for the starters, throughout history the greatest players were usually iron men. Karl Malone, MJ, Kobe, Wilt, Dr J. These guys would play every available minute of every game to win. I would hope we have that hunger on our core. I like seeing players who don't want to come out of games.

Those players all played on teams with good-great benches. Also, this is an 82-game season, we can't expect our starters to play at a high-level for an entire season while logging 40+ minutes a night, it's just not feasible.

Dhawes, in the cases of Malone and Jordan I don't think they had great benches. Karl played with Greg Ostertag and Jeff Hornacek in the starting lineup, Jordan played with Luc Longley and BJ Armstrong? I think my point was that Karl could run all day with younger opposition and beat them downcourt most of the time without sweating a bead, so could MJ..we have starters that are capable of that and we have a weak bench for sure. Kobe has a weak bench now and if need be, he'll just take over a game. I think Batum and Aldridge can and should have some of that mentality. They're still pretty young. Batum is showing that ability now and I think Wes has always had it. Sure you want to rest starters but the great players usually build up a big enough lead for the bench to maintain it or at least not lose it when they come in. Steve Kerr and Will Perdue were not defensive juggernauts on the Bulls..Perdue couldn't make a free throw to save his life and Kerr was like Hornacek, a shooter. Neither could defend.

So you don't mind that our whole starting 5 is averaging about 37 minutes per game? That is unheard of and will result in our team crashing near the end of the season. I don't care what player it is, those types of minutes are not intended for a whole team. Say all you want about how great players are iron men, yet that still doesn't take away the fact that we need some production. Our bench scored a whopping total of 4 points. Four!! I don't care if you have a Lakers-esque roster, that is simply not acceptable. And there are players to be had that could still be picked up. For instance, Josh Howard, Delonte West, Michael Pietrus and some others. Yes, they aren't exactly stars, yet you can't win without a bench. You also create a hazard of consistent injuries if you don't start cutting minutes a bit. As for the whole trade value thing, all we need is someone who can just produce some points. I'm sure that we could find someone on the cheap who will give us some energy while not giving up too much.

Oh sure, I mind as much as anybody that our bench only scores 4 pts..but most of our losses were from poor 1st half production and my point is that we can win with staggered rotations and being tired is not a valid excuse if you want to be seen as an allstar. It's the passion and hunger for winning games I'm addressing and starters are paid enough and trained enough to be the Andre Millers and Karl Malones or even Wes Mathews guys that stay on the court. We're not an old team like the Celtics or Knicks that cannot keep fresh legs on the court. We're young and players are in their prime. I think Stotts is still learning his rotations and for the time being I'm patient with the bench. Parilcularly Barton, Freeland, Leonard and Price. Price and Barton are coming off injury. Starters all are in game shape. We could use a pure scorer on the bench no doubt. Not Howard or West in my opinion. Michael Redd is unsigned..he's a pure scorer. There's an interesting message here about the guys in Greece that I'd replace two bench players with in an instant. As far as our bench vets, 6 games together is not going to seal the chemistry yet...that's also a work in progress.

I would be alright with Michael Redd because he can be quite the scorer. The thing is that our starters are doing dang good already for the teams we have been put up against so far. Yet you can't expect every player in the starting 5 to play like an all-star every single game. The only players I expect to be seen as an all-star caliber player is LA and also Batum once he keeps his production up. Everyone else is just supposed to play to their potential.

Even though this team is young though, 82 games is a lot for anyone. You get worn down and tire. Bones don't recover like they do anymore. Heck, I'm only 24 and whenever I play soccer I'm incredibly sore the next day. That never happened when I was 17 to 18. Now imagine playing at the NBA level and the stress put on their bodies and playing the occasional back to back game. It's unrealistic to expect everyone to be Andre Miller type healthy.

I think we have the best starting lineup we could hope for. Injuries happen in sports, I played competitive sports into my mid 40s, full court tennis, semi pro basbeball in asia, full court hoops every afternoon for over a decade in the tropics. Sprains, breaks tears, all that happens no matter how old you are but cardio you can control especially if you're paid a small fortune to stay in shape and have a world class training crew behind you. Malone used to comment about it all the time and I agree with him. I'm 59 schwabbii and still play full court tennis and you're right, you don't heal fast when you're older but it shouldn't affect you much until your early 30s if you control your diet and work out year round. I don't think it's at all unrealistic to expect players on a world class professional team to take responsibility for staying in iron man shape. A lot of athletes throughout history have and always rise to the top. Yes, I agree, we need bench help. We also need time to develop confidence and chemistry with the players we have and it's early. I'm always happy to hear Leonard talk about diet and rest when interviewed because that's a huge part of having a long, healthy, productive career!!

Our bench isn't scoring because they can, they aren't scoring because Stotts has told them not to...he would rather they feed the ball to the starters who are in with them. This method of playing the starters almost the whole game and not having the bench produce offence is not working and will not work. Our bench players need to be ask to produce some offence or like some of you had said, our guys are gonna crash and burn...Stotts prefered playing cycle just isn't realistic.

I think there's a point to what you stated Employ17 but Stotts is not making guys miss shots or throw the ball away. He is, however, learning the bench by trial and error and there have been plenty of errors. Freeland is a case in example. We know he can shoot but he hasn't made shots much on the Nba level as of yet because, like a lot of the bench that's never played at this speed, he's over thinking the sets. Once a system becomes 2nd nature to a team, starters or bench, they'll have instincts that sharpen the spacing and get the motion moving to the open man. You can see now on court that there's hesitation with his motion offense and that's to be expected. I think Freeland, Sasha, Price, Barton and Claver will develop some chemistry as we get deeper into the first half of the season. I've said before, we're not the Spurs or Celtics with a standing system and returning players that know it inside out. It's trial by fire for now

Say all you want about the bench, this game against San Antonio was ours to win with the players we have.

So other than the bench, why didn't we win? NOT PLAYING SMART BASKETBALL.

I've written it in a few other posts so I'm not gonna go all through the logic of "TAKING LESS JUMPERS = WIN MORE OFTEN", especially when tired and late in games... but it's so simple that it blows my mind:
We only needed 1 or 2 more buckets and 1 or 2 better defensive stops, and we take the W. So if the game is decided by a single basket, than there is NO EXCUSE for taking safe/lazy/soft jumpshots instead of a higher% attack. Closer to the basket=likely to score/better position to grab a rebound/chance at freethrows/short rest for tired teammates, all if you use a higher% attack, compared essentially to a coinflip from deep, for 1 extra point, at the risk of being caught on a runout or not set on D. THE THREE IS ALMOST NEVER THE SMARTER OPTION.

At least Batum realized he made a mistake; he made comments post-game that if given another chance at the game-winning shot, he wouldn't have opted for the outside shot. CONGRATS, NICO. You are learning that the game is about brains, not just brawn.

Now if only we can get LaMarcus to take his ego out of it; cuz I'm truly starting to think that's the problem about his love for the Jumper. Did you hear him talking with Quick? Jason could barely word the questions about "why are you playing more outside than inside" before Aldridge was getting defensive and saying "Stotts agrees with me, it's fine for me to play outside more". This is BAD. I'm worried that through all the pressure to post-up, he could be getting defensive and just pushing to head more in the other direction... kinda like when we needed him to play center, because our numbers were consistently better with him as the 5, but he kept saying "I don't play center. Don't call me Center. Blazers' center is always cursed" ok i get it, superstition is fine but DUDE, ALDRIDGE! You need to PLAY SMART BALL, and your best numbers, the ones that made you an allstar, are from the post, not from the outside J. Period.

I am a fan of BLAZER BASKETBALL. Not drafts, not business, not trades, not David Stern. Just BLAZER BASKETBALL.
