Trail Blazers (2-3) Vs. Jazz (4-2)

    What To Watch For

    Battle Under The Boards
The Jazz, featuring possibly the best quartet of bigs in the league (Al Jefferson, Derrick Favors, Paul Milsap, Enes Kanter), earn their stripes on the boards. Through six pre-season games, Utah is third in the NBA in rebounding, pulling down 47.8 boards per game. They also rank No. 1 in rebound differential, winning the battle of the boards by an average of 7.6 rebounds per night. The Trail Blazers are no slouch on the glass, either, ranking 14th in total rebounds per game (42), but there's no debating which team has the size advantage in this contest. The Portland wings will need to crash the boards, specifically Nicolas Batum who should be able to use his length to crash the glass

    Bench Scoring
In their defeat to the Warriors, the Blazers bench, which showcased eight players, only registered 29 points with no one reserve scoring more than seven. With Elliot Williams sidelined and JJ Hickson in the starting lineup for the time being, someone needs to take ownership off the bench and be that go-to offensive weapon. Claver shined in the win over Denver, Babbitt has finally regained his shooting stroke, and Pavlovic caught fire in the 4th quarter against Golden State, but can either string together a couple of strong scoring outings in a row before the season tips off?

Did Utah sweep us last year? I think they did. You know what that means don't you?

This wil be a statement game for our bigs and wings. I think we'll see LA post up more and Batum and Mathews drive the lane trying to get those big guys in foul trouble. Will be interesting to see if Stotts gives the starters som 2nd half playing time and shrink the rotation some. On another note, Utah lacks perimeter scoring and is said to have 29 year old Jefferson on the trading block? I look for JJ, LA, Joel and Meyers to bring it in the post.

Great game from the Blazers. I was really impressed tonight. And considering this was a pre-season game, our guys played hard. And I mean HARD.

Props to the team for a great game and a great showing.

Dame's a pimp. Batum proves he's still flammable. JJ can humiliate guys twice his size. Wesley looks reborn. Joel was stroking it.

And then there's Mo Williams... my question is whether or not the flopping rule will be effective if the refs still make all the calls and the warning/penalty comes later? The only reason soccer leagues have gotten control over flopping is because the refs won't give the call to the flopper and card him when appropriate.

Is it just me or does JJ play SO MUCH BETTER when LA's not on the court? Time to start Freeland and bring JJ off the bench. He and LA just aren't a good mix together out there.

Those are some fun highlights. If we have that kinda thing going on in the majority of our games this year this will be a fun season, win lose or draw.

Was fortunate enough to be on hand for this one and had some observations. Watching Dame's command of the game, his leadership on the floor confirms what I've thought about the kid. Stotts pulled him early after he picked up two quick fouls, however those were the same two fouls he finished the game with. The six TOs are symptomatic of a rook floor general making adjustments from the college game to pro. Not concerned whatsoever.

Nic put up, shutting up his critics (all but me) for now. Though his numbers on paper appear impressive, it was the manner in which he accumulated them that had me concerned. Blue in the face from stating this so much on these boards...this team lacks an inside presence with which to help collapse defenses AND STILL appears to lack a player with the ability to create off the bounce (Dame excluded). Batum caught fire...from the perimeter, which doesn't lend itself to consistency in the scoring column over an 82 game schedule. Blazers fans know this has been Nic's biggest and most valid criticism. This team needs CONSISTENT scoring from Nic this season as well as the development of some triple threat ability. Should Nic become motivated to add this to his repertoire, the sky is the limit and an allstar appearance likely. If he does not? Look for him to be run out of town by season's end. That simple. No excuse now for making the money he's making, at the 3, and not having that triple threat ability.

The team seemed to be picking up Stotts' zone better, and the "organized chaos" it resembles, which is encouraging. There were still some loss/recovery things going on in terms of assignments and responsibilities, but overall, the D seemed to be pretty effective.

Alot has to go Portland's way this year for this season to not be a forgettable one, but I was encouraged by what I saw.

LaMarcus is my pick to click tonight. I expect him to come out of the gates full force tonight. I want LA and JJ to destroy the Jazz tonight. I hope Barton is a spark plug off the bench tonight as well.

Id like to see Nic sit out tonights game. Lets see how aggressive L.A. can be without him on the floor. Also, id like to see Dame only play the second and fourth quarter. Give Karl the start. Expect to see Sasha play a little point forward of which he is capable. The regular season will see us playing a lot of Lillard,Matthews and Price against Utah. Three guys who we know wont crumple in Utahs house. One thing that we seemed to be sorely missing is one or more guys who didnt getting spooked on the road. If we want to have any semblance of success this season, we have to have road wins. The last couple of seasons we've looked like a high school team on the road. L.A,Nic and Matthews cant always do it.

Nah uhhh a defensive center, a backup big either position I don''t care, an experienced wing, without having to give up any draft picks. I''d probably do this but I just don''t know for sure.

I completely agree he could be that voice on the court we need. Lamarcus just isn''t that guy and Damian can learn some on court leadership from him. A small lineup when we need a score bad of Dame, Wes, Paul, Nic, and Lamarcus would be potent.
