Trail Blazers (2-2) Vs. Warriors (4-1)

    What To Watch For
    Lottery Pick Showdown
Assuming Damian Lillard is healthy enough to play (bruised foot), this will be our first look at the Barnes/Lillard matchup. Everyone is thrilled with Lillard, but on draft day, when Harrison Barnes fell a few fans were in favor of the North Carolina product, but alas Portland went with Lillard and that was all she wrote. Never the less, it will be interesting to see how each rookie performs. Can barnes create his own offense? Will he show that he's more than just a mid-range specialist? On the other hand, will Damian come out more assertive and look to score, rather then waiting until the 3rd quarter to start operating?

Here is how the two compare statistically through the pre-season to date:

    Hot Perimeter Shooting
The Trail Blazers lived by the 3 Wednesday night against the Nuggets, connecting on 13 of 31 attempts from beyond the arc which propelled them to a 17-point victory. I would argue that the majority of the 3-point attempts were quality looks, but an outside shot is still an outside shot and sometimes they just don't fall. So look for two things. One, can Portland find other ways to score if the 3-point shot isn't falling. Two, will the team continue to shot at a high clip from outside?

Play good defense and make big baskets. Get the Rose Garden fired up. Blazers looked smooth in that Denver game last night. I think we got some momentum now.

I agree with Tobyus. Effort on defense will be huge, and the RG is one of the few arenas that gets fired up from good defense.

As far as the Lillard/Barnes issue, I'm pretty sure it's dead, isn't it? Is anyone in the nation still denying that Lillard was a better pick up than Barnes? I know Lillard still hasn't played in NBA regular-season competition yet, but he's outperformed Barnes in every level of competition so far. Damian's arguably the favorite to win ROY, and Barnes is a dark horse at best. I would actually say that even Barton has a possibility to pass Barnes on the rookie ladder if the stars align right.

And DHawes, I'm wondering about some phrasing in your lead-off this time. You said, "Can Portland find other ways to score if the 3-point shot isn't falling?"

I would much rather say, "if penetration and post scoring is scarce, can the perimeter players knock down their shots?"

We have the perfect roster to play inside-out basketball with a back-to-basket forward and a penetrating point guard surrounded by shooters and athletes. If we have the mentality of playing outside-in, we're going to lose a lot of games. I'm beginning to notice, though, that we're playing either outside or inside. If a guard penetrates, or a big draws attention and kicks it out, the perimeter player seems to always put it on the floor (that goes for Wes, Nic, Luke, and Nolan). It's bad strategy when the middle is already clogged. Passers gotta pass, finishers gotta finish, shooters gotta shoot. If we do that, we'll be all right.

I still wish the 3pt shot was the last option unless wide open and uncontested. I prefer the layup drawing the foul +1 play and if it's not there, kick it out. Defense was improved against Denver and after two horrible defensive games I was starting to wonder about Kaleb but credit to him, adjustments were made. I only say Kaleb because he's defined as the defensive coach. If someone's really stroking the 3, you gotta go to it I understand but getting the other team in the penalty doesn't happen at the 3pt line often and we have a great free throw shooting team. Golden State is a better team this season and I hope Lillard comes out strong in the first half. Preseason is strange, beat two teams expected to be better than us and lost to two teams we expected to beat. Playing down to the competition. Go Blazers! I'm stoked we're watching basketball already!

Completely agree with Pickett and Riverman, glad we're all on the same page... I'm happy that we have guys who can make the 3, but even on an open shot it's practically a coin flip to go in, on any given attempt, yet going inside you can have easier buckets, get the opponent in foul trouble, and earn just as many points.

If you think of a team's offensive weapons as being speed, outside players, and inside players, I'd say our guys that go inside (LaMarcus, JJ, Meyers, Joel, Damian, Nico, Wesley) are WAY more reliable for good numbers, night in and night out, than our guys who would put up big numbers while shooting outside (Luke, Adam, and also Nico, Wes, and Dame). I'm not saying that we can ignore our outside shooters, but the idea that the offense would be structured around Luke more than around Aldridge is ridiculous, right?

We've got the speed and the ball movement, that will help either way... A 1-trick pony that plays the inside game would have trouble some nights, but a 1-trick pony that plays the outside game is essentially going to have to get lucky.

Bottom line tonight though: There's no way this GS team should be better than us during the season. If tonight is a little rough, what I want to see is the aggressive ball moving play that we saw against Denver. If we can keep that constant, and eventually everyone gets adjusted, there could be a few less bumps in the road this year than some people are worried about.

    GO BLAZERS

Looks like the home fans could get their first look at Dame tonight in the Rose Garden
Portland G Damian Lillard (left mid-foot confusion) upgraded to probable for tonight's game vs. Golden State.

I like the outside jumper ..alot..that being said we dont have anyone that can hit it on a consistant basis. I have hopes for Barton but we will see. Drive to the hoop and get the charity shot or shots.
On defense does anyone know if we scraped the zone or are we still using it?

So he had a Left mid-foot CONFUSION? Did he forget what foot was his left foot and have to sit out a game as a result? lol :)

    Contusion I assume. :)

The zone is obviously still a look that the Blazers will keep, but it never should have been used for as long a period of time as it was. Even using the zone for an entire quarter is questionable; for an entire half is like saying "please beat us." I'm assuming more evaluation of the zone will happen in practices with some real starting and bench lineups learning their roles in it.

I just want to see the same effort on defense that started in the 2nd quarter in the Denver game. I've already explained what I want to see on offense, but I'd also add that I think this game will probably narrow our options for the 15th roster spot down to one or two guys.

It was a reeeaal close game. I didn't like that last play, with Luke running down the clock with only 14 seconds left and then Nolan taking a desperation 3 because of the all the time that Luke had ran down.

Was a good game overall though, despite not getting the W in the end.

Also gotta realize that Golden State had their starting 5 in most of the second half, whereas the Blazers had their second unit in during the 3rd/4th quarter. But we still kept it close, and almost pulled thru with the win, so props to the bench for the heart and tough play.

Can't wait for the regular season mwuahahaha >:]

Sasha almost won that game for us last night, his crunch time 3 almost went down. I think we learned a bit about who needs to be waived or cut from the roster but still wish our starters had 6 minutes in the 4th to put that game away for the homecrowd.

Yeah and now Blazers have zero interest in Bynum. I really thought he was worth the small risk. If anything he would be at the end of our bench and we use him as a sub. Hopefully we do make some type of trade for a quality back up center. Right no...
