This is what I see myself saying in April:

We lost 15 games by 5 or less.  All we need is to pick up a couple of difference makers in the off season and those will be wins next year.  We're poised to be right back in the competition for the conference title.  When is the draft lottery again? lol

Can't blame the lockout and an overweight pt guard this year. I'm really hoping Stotts is hiding his best game plans from opposition for the regular season. So far I think Kaleb has to do a better job getting the guys sharp on defense. We need Ronnie Price and JJ Hickson healthy.

We hopefully will squeak into those playoffs, and shake up the world of basketball by knocking those pesky Lakers out of the 1st round. That's what I'm talkin' about!!!

Good thought riverman.  I agree, we look like we're gonna take some lums to start if the preseason game plan stays in effect.  Of course that's what preseason is for and we are testing different strateis to see what this group can pull off.  Hickson and Price will play imortant roles for us.  We DO need them out there.

Yeah! Tobyus.  Nice enthusiasm!!  Will that be an 8/1 mach up or a 7/2?  Not so sure the Lakers will be the #1 seed myself.

Oh no. I think we'll be a solid playoff team before that. I just think it will take that long for our season record to surpass OKC, San Antonio, and The L.A. teams.

This rebuild has one of the most solid starts out of any that I've seen. Lillard, Leonard, and even Barton were killer pick ups that will help speed us to a playoff spot before long. We just shouldn't expect home court advantage too soon.

Lol word, Riverman. Sweep Lakers in the regular season, and if we can get to the playoffs, get the matchup with the Lakers and sweep em there. And just by our rightous glory over the Fakers, suddenly we're in the 2nd round. That's gonna be awesome! I hope I hope I hope...

But most likely, I think at the end of the season I'll be saying "Wow, good games, good times, and it's only getting better"

Agree with you Blazer 247 and Riverman, I'm going to be saying "Good to see a group of young guys pull together, make a couple runs at some really good teams, and stay resilient through the rough patches. Man do I love the this team." Whatever the record, this is a really great group of guys that's going to compete, which is all I can ask for as a fan.

P.S. I don't think it's way out there to see us in the playoff run this year, we got better, younger, quicker, more efficient, etc. at our biggest need, PG; and yeah we lost a very good C, but for a younger, bigger Center with a somewhat-similar style, if he can get his feet under him he'll be good. The bench got upgraded. I don't know but all I'm sayin is Don't underestimate our boys!!!

    @knorton...
you have a point.  When you look at who we have going into this season...and compare them to the poor performer that was in their place last year, the only spot we're probably worse is 5.  When you think back on Pryzbilla and Camby's contributions last season, it may not be hard for this group to match that.

It's arguable that we are better with Lillard at the 1 (although that has yet to be seen) over Felton.  I know people don't want to look at the value that Felton had, but there were a few things he did well.  And, well, if we're honest, Dame does have some rookieness to shake.

Batum will do as well if not better at the 3 than Wallace did.

Matthews looks to be a different animal this year.  Time will tell.

LMA is a year more savvy as well.  He's looking more beastly than ever.  This preseason he seems more coordinated or something.  Anyone else notice that?

You guys are starting to convince me that this could be a more successful campaign than last years.  Hmm...

Finally some others saying the same thing, and not just getting written off as wearing Rose-city-colored glasses!

That's exactly how I've been feeling, not only is this team an upgrade over last year's roster in how fun their basketball will be to watch, but they're also definitively improved at every position except the 5, and that really isn't all that far behind from the modest strength we had there last year.

    Some more food for thought:

    - Dame may have a lil rookieness, as does Meyers, but neither has the kind that won't be fixed with a)playing time and b)good coaching... some players do have unteachables that will hold them back, but not our rooks. Lillard will without a doubt play better than Felton by the end of this season, because Felton's season with us was nowhere near his best. Easy bar to improve on :)

    - Batum will without a doubt be better than Wallace, for the same reason that it's an easy bar for Lillard to top Felton; Wallace's season with us was not a shining mark on his career. Let's not forget that GDubs was completely invisible on the road! Plus, Batum is primed from controversy, age, and pride, both over his contract and his olympic performance(s).

    - It's true what they're sayin about Wes; he's in superior shape to anything we've seen from him. His handles are improved, his confidence is up, plus a shooting guard tends to shine brighter next to an aggressive pg, which no one seems to mention when they talk about how Lillard is going to help our guys!

    - What's one of the easiest, most consistent ways to help teams grow during a season and not be bogged down by mistakes (like last year, that carry over to the next game and hurt us more)? Practice. What helps practice? Having a slower schedule due to a FULL season!!! When our guys were in trouble last year, we had 1, maybe 2 days before the next game, and usually had to fit travel in there as well. By contrast this year, we're going to have almost twice as long between games on average, maybe sometimes more, and an arguably easier schedule overall. On top of that, our guys our young and quick... just a little extra rest is going to make it look like our guys are fresh every day we see em run.

    - Training camp... there was one! Last year we all got fooled a bit by a nice start, which was probably due to the fact that we simply had talent on the floor who knew how to play the game... but once opponents started to gel against us, we had nowhere to improve, and couldn't get back on top. Lack of camp + lack of practices during the season = lack of chemistry. Not so, this time around, and you can already see in the preseason that their good play stems from more than just talent.

-Coaching. Whether you're a fan of McMillan or not, it's pretty evident that his strengths and style were no longer helping us. So far, the difference that Coach Stotts has brought is night and day; what McMillan only talked about last year but didn't seem to instill in his players (changing to a running, ball movement style), Stotts has been actually using since Day One. Where Nate tended to run the same plays (and few of them), Terry is known as a playmaking mastermind offensively (for a dominant Pg/Pf offense), and is focused on strengthening the other end with reactive and mobile defense. Beyond HC, take one look at Kaleb Canales and tell me he doesn't look more in his element than ever before. The guy has always beamed with enthusiasm, and now he has more experience and confidence to back it up. We all know that when you try to take on something big and then step back, everything seems easier. I'd bet money that Kaleb is more dangerous as a defensive coach this year than anything we've seen from him yet. And behind him, Stotts had the opportunity to hand-pick his coaches, and tailored them to the players and needs on our roster, a nice benefit that we certainly didn't have last year.

Sorry to make that such a long one, but maaaaaaaaaaan am I stoked about the season. It's almost torturous that the last preseason game isn't gonna be televised, cuz all I wanna do right now is Blazer basketball.

BEAT LA! BEAT LA! BEAT LA! BEAT LA!

Yeah 24sev,  forgot about the coaching.  I like Stotts so far.  Gotta say, for all that Nate did for us, he was one moody SOB.  He was terrible at developing relationships with his players.  He was maybe a little bit too old school.  Is Terry Stotts Scott Brooks 2.0?

Another factor for this year is
that we are being underestimated rather than overestimated.  This takes a ton of pressure off.  We will undoubtedly win more than 27 games as recently predicted.

LOL Hollinger doesn't know Blazers, period. I know we all heard him say Meyers is our starting C (maybe eventually, but I think we're all smarter than that), but did you hear him pronounce Lillard's name "Le-Lard"? I don't think I've heard anyone get that one wrong yet. I think he's spent a little too much time lookin at screens and printouts and not enough looking at players and the game...

I'm not gonna have false hope that we're going to rock the West this year or anything, but 27 wins out of 82 games? That's a solid 2 losses for every win, I just don't believe we'll be THAT bad.

Hollinger did the best for any "expert" lol. Unless it's a beat writer or personal team scout/critic, these experts can probably only tell you much about the top 8 teams, which is the obvious stuff that we all know. It's hard to analyze every team with such detail. He definitely didn't seem to know much at all and seemed like he just spoke of what he has heard.

To the topic discussed, I think they Key factor to this all comes down to what @postedbailblazers had written: Stotts. He is a huge factor; can he keep the team competeing through losses? How well can we effectively defend and play "tough" basketball? How do the lineups work and which players are asked to do what in certain situations?

A lot of this team this year is going to come down to Terry, and if we don't get to the playoffs or even meet .500, it's not "his fault." But if he can get them all on the same page quickly, for a new team, then we have a decent shot.

The big question to me is how will we perform on the defensive end, offensively we have so many weapons, but can our young players keep it physical and *rotate correctly*, and trust eachother. (Will we be a high foul team? Will our defense keep up to par?)

*I starred rotate correctly because that's a huge difference in a team that is good and a team that is great, and it affects the offensive end as well. For example, the heat's defensive rotations and matchups (obviously) and especially the mavericks 2 years ago, the way they played defense was outstanding for the group they had, but it can often be more difficult for young, inexperienced players to really get down those rotations (which can cause doubt in some of the other players' minds, which will cause hesitation in their rotations as well).

And so far I'm seeing a good job of all of these things in the preseason which gives me a good amount of optimism

I actually think our frontcourt is better this season than last. Camby quit playing after 10 games and tried to be a jumpshooter. Pryz just didn't play very well at all and Rhino, who I loved on the squad, never cracked the rotation. Great thing about this new roster is we have young talent that will get time on the court. That's a huge difference over Nate's mindset. Nate ran the starters into the ground and didn't play rookies. Popovich used to be like that but 2 years ago changed his system and it worked. I like our whole coaching staff and hope we're a 500 ball club. I see no reason we won't be. Prediction, Kobe gets injured and declines in production. Dwight Howard and Kevin Love both demand trades and get their coaches fired. Meanwhile the Blazers grow exponentially and have comradery and fun together as a team winning more games than any of the critics can fathom. Already in preseason we've beaten 3 teams that were supposed to walk all over us and Golden State played their starters for almost a whole game to get a win. It's all upside in Rip City and the season is about to unfold! It's a great day to be a Blazer Fan!

But yeah ^exactly, Leonard gets in and does great, Pop gives his young guys some good time, exactly what we should be doing!

All I know is I'm excited, could care less if we lose, just want to see good tough, physical play. The one thing I HATE though is turnovers, which I'm hoping was just a "full moon" type game tonight... (Even better if it's just a "blue moon" type game ;) llol)

I foret if it was Orlando Williams or Tone who said post game that Lillard was trying to hard to thread the needle with passes last night that might have worked in college but aren't quick enough for the NBA game. Passing has been a problem since Dre left and that is an area that will limit turnovers. Hope the coaching staff addresses that and cleans it up. LaMarcus had 7 turnovers which tells me he's still rusty. We need Ronnie Price to calm down the offense and keep pressure on scoring guards. Lillard is an amazing talent but we need to pace him a bit and keep him fresh as he develops.

Having a real point guard is going to be the difference maker.Dame has a veteran presence on the court. Calm, poised, and has a second gear. I also like that we have Coby Karl in our farming system just in case. Sasha will pay dividends come playoff time. He's been there. Stotts has a Championship ring and is a pretty damn good offensive minded coach.Personally, i think if Nate was coaching the halloween game, he manages to lose it for us by freezing our momentum with ill advised swagger killing time-outs.Im looking forward to us shocking the NBA world and shutting a few mouths. Our bench is still a little anorexic, but im hoping that Will da Thrill Barton can become a new and improved version of J.Crawford. And hopefully Claver can be a beast version of Hedo Turkoglu. Freeland too can stand to polish up some aspects of his game. Ryan Anderson comes to mind in regards to Freeland with the exception that Joel is a better banger.  Rip City is back !!!!!

Well we underachieved from my most optimistic predictions. Especially the bench. Injuries to the starters also contributed throughout the season. Nice adjustment picking up Maynor at the end though. Claver, Leonard and Barton made a case for returning to the bench as well as Maynor. Not a terrible season by any stretch
