Why the Summer of 2013 is more important than 2012 was

I know many of you are probably wondering what I am thinking. I mean we had two lottery picks, and a ton of open roster spots with plenty of cap room this summer, but what did we do with that flexibility we resigned our own players, signed our European rookies and got a few small role players to fill out the roster. Without the excellent draft to get excited about I would have spent a lot more time outside this summer.

This summer we built a foundation, next summer we need to start building our house. I am not happy with our current roster as anyone who has ever read any of my posts can attest but I think we got some potential to make a impact with a few smart moves. For those of you who know me and like to skip ahead I will not be trying to trade Aldridge in this thread.

If you want to know what I think of our current roster check out my keep or trade thread. Now that you know where I stand lets move on to what we can do to get this team out of the lottery.

The team currently has serious concerns at every position besides PF. Luckily for us the 2013 free agent class has a ton of talent that can accelerate our building process.

Stotts will have us scoring a lot of points with his wide open offense, but as Golden State and Phoenix have shown in the past an explosive offense does not translate to playoff success without defense. Defense and rebounding have to be a major concern for this team and while they may surprise me, my educated guess has us in the bottom half of the league in both categories. With the new heavy emphasis being placed on three point shots, free throws attempts will likely be another category to address next summer.

Here are the moves I would make:
    1. Bring in Tyreke Evans he will be 24 at the start of next season so he is young and he is capable of playing PG, SG, and SF. Evans is a very aggressive scorer but he needs the ball in his hands to have the most success, he won't get that in Sacramento behind Thornton, Brooks, Salmons and Cousins. He would also not get that as a starter for our team but because of his flexibility having him be our six man would be ideal. On the second unit we can allow him to run the offense and focus on scoring, which he does very well. He is also an excellent rebounder for a guard and would fit Stotts offense well.
    2. Bring in Tony Allen this team needs a defensive presence and Allen is arguably the best perimeter defender in basketball. This team has a lot of people who can score the basketball so any offense we get from Allen will be a bonus. What he will provide though is leadership on the floor, amazing consistent effort and lock down defense. He would be the perfect starting SG to mesh with Evans.
    3. Bring in Taj Gibson this one will be more difficult as he is a restricted free agent and will likely be the starter after they eventually amnesty Boozer. Despite the difficulty bringing him in is very much worth the effort. He is a tireless defender especially in the post where he is among the leagues best. He is also an excellent rebounder, with more offensive ability than people give him credit for. He would be the perfect type of player to pair upfront with LA. He is also an excellent shot blocker, which has been a Blazer need for a while.
    4. Draft well we should have at least one more season in the lottery so we need to make the most of it. We would be wise to trim our rotation so dealing players to acquire at least one more first round pick would be smart. I have two players that would be a perfect fit on this new team in mind, first is F Tony Mitchell out of North Texas he is a great defender, rebounder and capable scorer, currently he is projected to go late lottery right in range for us to take him. The second player is PG Aaron Craft Ohio State, craft is not much of a scorer but he is the best on ball defender in college and can run an offense, he would be the perfect fit with the offensive minded Lillard.
    5. Lock up talent early, we need to get a bargain for our young players so offering them an extension as soon as possible is a great way to avoid having the market drive up the price like they did on Batum.

Here is my revamped 2013 Trailblazers Roster
    PG Damian Lillard
    PG Aaron Craft
    SG Tony Allen
    SG Tyreke Evans
    SG Will Barton
    SF Nicolas Batum
    SF/PF Tony Mitchell
    PF Lamarcus Aldridge
    PF Taj Gibson
    PF Jared Jeffries
    C Meyers Leonard
    Random 12th player

By shortening the roster we can guarantee more minutes for our core players. This team will be capable of playoff level defense, which will be important if we want any chance of success in the playoffs. Our rebounding should be improved and with the growth of Lillard and the addition of Allen we should also have the kind of leadership Portland has been missing on the court since Roy left.

Let me know what you think or come up with you own moves but lets not settle.

I doubt Taj Gibson will be pursued by us. I wouuld rather have Freeland and Hickson over Taj anyways. Tony Mitchell sounds nice.  He sounds like a Iman Shumpert/ Early Ron Arterst. Which would be nice because he fills a need for us.

But I think if we get Tyreke Evans , which would be great, I dont think that the Blazers would go after any other SG. I would love to get Tony Allen also, but I think they would be basically just like how we are right now but with a much better SG. I think in that trade we would get Jimmer who would be our second PG. I think our 2013 off season would be us going after a Center and a Point guard again. There is a chance they offer some deals to James Harden or Bynum but I think we will be pursuing Nikolai Pekovic, ZAZA, Maybe Okafor. Eric Maynor, Jose Calderon.

I dont see our roster being much different next year. Maybe a change at SG. All I see us doing is adding a solid SF or C in draft. Also we will ad some depth. I think some veterans at Center to mentor Leonard and supply some D. Hickson probably wont be here unless he performs great this year.

There is a 20% chance we make a blockbuster trade involving Lamarcus. Which would probably switch up alot of the roster

It doesn't. But you can go from bottom team in west to a home court team in the west in 2 seasons. But adding Tyreke and some quality role players will be a start!

Right now based on what Elliot has produced I will take Tyreke all day. If that changes good, even if it does and Williams becomes our best SG then Evans would still be a great fit as the versatile 6th man because he can back up the PG, SG and SF spots. He is also an solid passer who will attack the basket and put constant pressure on the defense.

What has Tyreke done except prove he cant be a point. Tony Allen i like because he plays d all game. Taj Gibson over JJ is insane. Listen, i dont want anybody that our current players can lock down on defense.

Tyreke has only out scored, out rebounded, out passed and acquired more steals than our second best player and new 11 million dollar man than Batum.

Career averages of 18.2 PPG 4.9 REB and 5.3 AST represents a major upgrade for this team.

If we do get Tyreke I would want him starting. He would be a nice compliment to our time. Since we have a lot of shooters he would excel here. I am a fan of Tyreke because he is very versatile and get to the basket at will. I hope Portland brings him in. Than have Elliot back him up.

Addressing the topic I would almost agree with you but before we trade half our team before the 2012 season starts. I think that the 2012 trade deadline is going to be  more important. we will have evaluated the talent we have. In my book we have 5 unknowns Barnes,E.Will and our euro trash(insert Batum here). We have a pretty good idea of what our Euros will do. in my opinion will be not much outside Batum and I hope he has that breakout year but I think we will get more of the same as last year. E.will I am kinda with DHawes on this one Nate kept him down and he got hurt in a freak injury we should see what he can do by the trade deadline. Trading Nolan Smith in hopes of picking up Craft. Not sure I would want Craft and Lillard bumping heads for time on the court 2 differant styles also. No I like what I saw out of Smith in the summer league if he keeps that play I would not have a problem with him running the second team but we will see. Hickson will be the wild card here also.Lets see if he can play like he did last year and it was not a fluke. Our defense is not as bad as GS or PHO was but our rebounding was worse and that is just plain lack of hustle there and no excuse.
So back on topic here since I have yet to see what is in the box I am going to keep it for now instead of going for the unkown quantity of cash in the pocket and there is still time to pick door number 1,2,3

More on Craft. I only saw him play in 3 games during the Championship and Tournement but from what I seen of him I liked and I thought he was the best pg in the tournement. in 3 games he had 20+ assists and about the same amount of points though, but his floor vision was excellant and he had no problem running that Ohio St. team. If Lillard does not work out (heaven forbid) than I can see drafting him otherwise you are just wasting 3-4 years of that kids life because he will run a team somewhere and he will do it well and when rookie contract time comes around he will be a luxury we will not be able to afford since Lillards contract will be up the year before. I think that pick would be best spent on someone we can groom to take one of our older players place like in the small forward position or power forward position.

Tony Parker, Rudy Fernandez,Nicolas Batum, are all from Europe. Before the 92 olympics all euro trash players could come over here and play and get paid BIG money and than go play for their countries team in the Olympics the same went for hockey BUT Americans could not play in the NBA and than go play in the Olympics. So to me I do not care how well they play they will ALL be Euro trash. Now if they want to get their citizenship and play in the NBA and pay our taxes than they wont be Euro Trash until then they will be euro trash.

Agree with Hawes on EWill.  Stat for dollar, EWill proves his value over Reke this season.  Additionally, Evans' ability to rack up big numbers isn't just confined to the hardwood.  He paid $3,800 for http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wjqGoyWR_5c   Not in a hurry to revisit the jailblazer era.
I also agree with Meese with regard to Mitchell, however not as high on Craft...not only as an NBA pg, but as a Blazer on that roster.  Proposed roster seems a bit heavy in the backcourt and thin up front.  Don't know there would be enough minutes to keep those particular guards happy.  Like Gibson and have always loved what Allen brings.

Batum was a 2 guard for France and Reke will be the starting three for Sac this year.

Both players would offer position flexibility.

Tyreke would not be a good starter for us the same reason why he is being let go from Sacramento. He has all the talent in the world but he needs the ball to be his best on the court.

In Sacramento he has to fight Thornton, Salmons, Thomas, Brooks, and Cousins for the ball.

The same thing would happen if you put him in the starting lineup with Lillard, Batum and Aldridge.
Make him a six man where he can have more control and you will get more out of him.

That's just putting up numbers on a crappy team. These are completely opposite types of players. Tyreke is a stats machine while Nic helps you in areas that don't show up on a box score. Don't get me wrong. I think Tyreke is a better player, and I think that he is exactly what we need. I also think we have already found that in Lillard. Besides there is no way that we can afford LA, Nic, Tyreke, and Lillard when the time comes. We're at the cap right there.

The title contenders do not care about the cap and if we get to that point Paul Allen has shown he is willing to spend his money. I say we worry about becoming contenders before we worry about being able to afford the pieces.

I would never gauge the production from last year with our current squad...Felton and Crawford had way too much rope and Gerald Wallace got a lot of touches. Put Batum or Mathews on the Kings last season and there numbers would have skyrocketed. It's a new season and I think Elliot Williams is our secret weapon..I also think Mathews, Batum and Aldridge will flourish under the new coach. I see nothing but upside with our depth and have stated before that any trade scenarios should be looked at in mid January..not before these guys have even played a game. We'll know a lot more about the holes in the roster around allstar break if in fact there are any

They name of the thread suggests waiting people, but should things remain as they are those were my suggestions on developing a much more well rounded team.

There are a few guarantees in basketball though.
    1. Defense wins titles. Do not believe me just ask Bill Russell, or Michael Jordan.
    2. FTs are the best shot you can get. Teams that shoot a lot of free throws are typically very good because they put a ton of pressure on the other teams defense.
    3. 48 mins of effort is needed every night
    4. Rebounding is important
    5. Good ball movement leads to easy baskets

Right now Portland is not a good defensive team, hopefully that changes but I am skeptical. With a new offense than emphasis the three pointer more than ever FT's should be even harder to come by. Effort has been an issue for some of our players. We are an average rebounding team at best. Stotts wants to stress ball movement so that should help but overall this team is currently lacking in major areas that guarantees playoff success.

Why would we get Smith or Milsap when we have Lamarcus.

Jefferson would be nice i guess,if the price is right.... he cant defend but he puts up huge numbers.

Pekovic would be GREAT but I dont see Minnesota not keeping him unless he gets a big enough offer...

Demarcus Cousins, Greg Monroe, James Harden are the big name guys if the Blazers go that route.

We will see how Meyers does this season.
Greg and Cousins are very polished offensive players and are good rebounders.

But Meyers has a smaller salary and has a great personality. Meyers has potential to be a better defender then those two anyways. Also Meyers has a high motor and the will work harder than those two guys.

I do not think the Blazers will go after big name Centers. I think they believe in Meyers which is good. Do believe they will get a veteran center to help Leonard.

First of all Cousins and Monroe are not free agents, both men are borderline all-stars with team options there is no way in hell those options do not get picked up outside of career ending injury or a prison sentence. Either way they won't be free agents. Available in trade maybe, but not on the open market.

Plus we should always be looking to upgrade. If we can get someone better at any position then you make the move.

    Ohhhh i see ....Thanks!

Well then I doubt Cousins/Monroe are becoming FA lol

In free agency I would like to look for a solid PG if Price isnt performing out there. Right now I dont think Nolan will step up. Price can be a nice back up PG, but we will see. If he doesnt then find a nice back up Point Guard.

Would like to find a Center in free agency.  Next season we will choose if we will keep Freeland or Hickson. Unless Freeland can play starting center. After we choose Lamarcus back up then, find a serviceable center to help out Leonard.

Next thing we would need to address is our wing position. Batum is great but we have little depth at that position.

I dont think major upgrading is needed currently. Unless it is at the Center position maybbee. Because Wesely already compliments Lamarcus because he plays off the ball, and does not need it most of the time. Batum is our SF. PG is set. So Center is the only position we would want to upgrade, maybe because Feeland and Meyers might be a nice duo for Centers. So I think bench production should be our main priority and will be a problem for us this season.

I just wanna be realistic. I just dont see any big upgrades at any of our positions that will be available soon. Players I think that may be on the trade block that are great players are :
    Rudy Gay
    Wilson Chandler
    Paul Milsap
    James Harden
    Kevin Martin
    Tyreke Martin
    Demar Derozan

I dont think any other good players will be traded from their teams. Unless a attitude situation occurs and problems in the organization causes a trade. Gerald Wallace, Jammal Crawford, Raymond Felton, semi big names around the league havent worked out for us lately. Players we drafted or unknown players have been though. (Wesely Matthews, LA, BROy, Batum, Hickson) I think that our team will not change majorly. Just because it did this season. I can see us going for a center. Or a upgrade a SG (Big Maybe)

I agree with you that we won't see any major changes but that does not mean I do not believe we should not be hoping for more to happen.

I like hope too. Im with you on that. For instance, i hope we play to the level of our talent. I hope we can stay healthy for an entire season and beyond. I hope we hush the mouths of doubters.

    Rudy Gay
    Wilson Chandler
    Paul Milsap
    James Harden
    Kevin Martin
    Tyreke Martin
    Demar Derozan

    Siccolo, i like this list.
Ive always looked at Milsap in the same way that i view Jason Maxiel,Brandon Bass, and Boozer. All should be walking double doubles. A lot of people dont like LaMarcus' game because he isnt on the inside taking elbows to the temple. The hate on his feathery touch, silky jumper, and down the middle hammer dunks and alley oops upside your head finishes around the rim. LA has preserved himself by playing smarter, not harder. He's a beast in his own right. What we need is that ever elusive savage that roams the middle. Wilson and James Harden would be my first choices.Harden with the edge.

    Thanks :)

Im also high on Wilson and Harden. Getting Harden, we have like a 20% chance to me because OKC might not want to pay Luxury Tax. But he is interested in PHO, and I dont know if we can even offer him a Max deal. Anything less OKC will probably match.

Wilson Chandler is a great SF. I would love to get him. Since Denver just got Iggy and have Gallo I can see them trading him. But they are a division team. We would have to trade Matthews because then Batum would play SG.
Maybe a three team trade. We probably have a 40% chance of getting him if we are interested.

Derozan is pretty good to. If we eventually trade Wes, then I would like to pick him up.

Outside these guys I wouldnt want any change to our roster. I dont see much of this happening though.
I guess I can hope it will, but I like our roster. I wont be begging and crying for these changes.  I hope I can be a GM in 10-15 years though lolol.

Normally I would agree but Harden would be such a significant upgrade that he has to be considered worth the risk.

Harden i would trade for in a heartbeat. He's got the heart of an assassin, something we sorely lack. Not one guy on our squad goes for the jugular. Newbies excluded of course because we havent seen them on the floor with the game on the line. Ive always said that we need that Roy replacement who when opposing defenses see him, they know they cant stop him. He's going to get to where ever he wants to on the floor and theres not a damn thing you can do to stop him.

Hawes will be a hot commodity by the trade deadline, I would think the sixers could find a better offer.

However, I do believe Mo Williams could have somewhat of  a high trade value. Olshey needs to make a deal to get a big man while we...
