Is it REALLY fair to label Oden a bust?

On my facebook newsfeed Champssports posted a question who is the biggest bust in sports history. Scrolling through I found a lot of Jamarcus Russell's, Kwame Brown's, and Greg Oden's. It really frustrates me seeing Oden on that list. There is a difference between "bust" and "injury prone". When I saw Oden healthy, he was a dominant big man in the middle who no offensive player would want to take on. That to me is not a bust. Yes, he didnt live up to his potential, but was it really his fault? Jamarcus Russell and Kwame Brown and Vince Young for that matter were/are all healthy pro players, but didnt live up to their potential when they were healthy. I hate ignorant out-of-state NBA fans who automatically think they are right on the matter and think our franchise is injury cursed. Just frustrated. Go Blazers

i do agree its unfari to call him a bust, he showed us great great great potential, if healthy he would def be the best big man in the league, he seemed mature and had a great all around game (howard lacks offense bynum lacks heart and defense) but the fact of the matter is he was not playing so he has to be labeled as a bust unless something happens and he gets healthy

If he gets healthy to the point where he has career longevity, then he's not a bust as a player. However, if you want to say he was a bust as a draft pick, I'd agree. He may end up being one of the best free agent pickups ever, but he obviously was a bust to the Portland franchise. In the same way, I would consider J. O'Neal a bust as a Portland draft pick, but he's been a key player on some contending teams. It's not so much about the player they become; it has more to do with failing to live up to expectations on the team that drafted you.

I do still believe, though, that the biggest busts are those who are lottery or 1st overall picks and end up being end-of-the-bench garbage time players (Kwame Brown anyone?).

Book is still out...however, if he never laces them up again?

The pick was a bust, not Greg.  GO has no fault in his circumstance...therefore, no blame.

He wasn't a bust because of his injuries, he was a bust because of how he handled things.  Granted, a lot of that was probably the Blazers organization, who is becoming notorious for being a bad organization these days, but he never showed up to games and a lot of players simply didn't know him as a teammate.

BDawg is right though.  The pick was an absolute bust.  Everyone in the entire league would have picked Oden over Durant that year, we were just the unlucky SOBs that got the 1st pick.

Herr nailed it. Greg had beautiful game, and it would have been foolish not to take him with the 1st pick. But when it came to the handling of the injuries and the role he played after, it seems that neither the team nor the athlete could get it right. But man was he awesome to watch when he was healthy on the floor...

I thought we would see him tryout for some team this year. His situation was a bust for us just an outright crying shame for him it was not his play or lack there-of it was his body did not comply

Let me just say this, Greg Oden should have made his career starring in Shrek, that big ugly OGRE is one worthless pile of manure that belongs in the swamps.  Why the heck did he have to be in the draft and ruin our one chance of getting a quality player...oh well, I guess I look forward to seeing the OGRE again in Shrek 5, cause there is no way he can play basketball again....unless he just plans on sitting on the bench for a year.

While I agree there is a difference between being a bust ( a player who was supposed to be good but never panned out) and one who is injury prone, Oden was the #1 pick. And it's not like he was just any other #1 pick, either. They had been hyping this kid up since he was 16 as the next BILL RUSSELL! That is some serious hype. Warranted or not, that's what the expectations were. And when he wasn't able to live up to them, even though it was through injury, people are going to call that a bust. So I would agree that he was a bust because we didn't end up with what we hoped for but it was more due to him being injury prone than being awful at basketball.

Injury Prone players can also be a bust, Oden could not stay on the court to reach his potential and the team suffered because of that. Kwame Brown is a bust because he just was not very good. There is a difference between them but they are both busts.

I agree mostly with DHawes22 on this one. My only addition would be that being injured and in recovery and abusing alcohol was the worst thing he could do. I came back from a bad tennis knee injury when I was young and the trainers stressed any booze during rehab would set me way back....this contributed to his inability to return fully healed and for that he is a bust, not because he lacked talent but because he lacked discipline and maturity in getting back on the court
