Chad Ford and John Hollinger rank the Portland Trail Blazers No. 23 in the latest rendition of ESPN.com's "Future Power Rankings," a look at which NBA teams have the brightest futures.
    -------------------------------------

Money-wise, Portland has a history of being willing to spend, but its free-agent miss this summer hurts because the club may be capped out for the next three. Portland has some trade assets and has always been willing to use its exceptions, but matching Batum's offer sheet from Minnesota assured there wouldn't be a second dip in the pool for a Roy Hibbert.

Throw in a mid-tier market that ranks high on player amenities (and, yes, bike lanes) but low on weather, and a future first-round draft pick owed to Charlotte for the Gerald Wallace deal, and Portland's future looks as iffy as ever. Don't look now, but Aldridge is a free agent in 2015. The Trail Blazers have three years to give him a reason to stick around. At least they finally hired a GM to put a plan in place; we'll see if this one lasts more than a year.

    -------------------------------------

The top-5: Miami Heat, Oklahoma City Thunder, Los Angeles Lakers, Utah Jazz and Indiana Pacers.

The teams below Portland: Toronto Raptors, Milwaukee Bucks, Orlando Magic, Sacramento Kings, Washington Wizards, Phoenix Suns and Charlotte Bobcats.

The Blazers were ranked No. 13 in February 2012, No. 10 in March 2011, No. 5 in March 2010 and No. 1 in November 2009.

This should serve as a reminder of how everyone is sleeping on us. I agree, we havent made any signidicant free agent moves. I also agree that we had better do something substantial to make L.A. want to stick around. I dont agree however with the fact that we are as bad as some are projecting us to be. As long as we compete every single night, we have a punchers chance in every game. To tell you the absolute Gospel, i enjoy a nailbiting, time elapsing loss, as much if not moreso than beating a powerhouse squad [ insert Lakers here ] by 20. Ive never been mad at the Blazers for taking a beatdown. Its the breakdowns, meltdowns, letdowns and lydowns that really piss me off. Play hard, all day all night. Rip City !!!!!

our draft, alone, should put us higher than 23.  we knocked it out of the park.  these idiots don't even mention the draft, lillard, or leonard. they're obsessed with FA because that's where all the big stories are. that's how all these big mega teams are put together in the big markets. god, i miss how sports used to be, and i'm only 34. i like the fact we are being underestimated but i can't stand these numbnuts at ESPN that either know less than your average fan or just choose to be ignore reality for whatever reason. i mean, please.......

Not sure how Detroit has a brighter future than ours...Monroe, Knight, Drummond should not be >>> Aldridge, Lillard, Leonard, Batum

Also, just a heads up (to everyone), but for insider or pay content, we can not pull the entire article and put it on our site even if we link to it. So, in the future, just pull a paragraph or two to. Thanks!

23 sounds about right for a team ith a rookie pg hell be exhausted through much of the season not saying he wont have a great start to his career or anything but this year will get his stamina up idk about dide saying we have an iffy future i bet that statement will change if lilliard has a great rookie year and i think if nothing happens to make alderidge stayi, think we should trade him off for a player and a first round pick

Rating teams before they have played one game is pretty silly. That being said, when were the Blazers not under the radar before preseason? I think it's become our identity.

Yeah, he was tripping with that Scottie Pippen reference. Nowhere as good as him, BUUUTTT, I think he can be, if he plays like a man. In Euroleague, you are taught more about finesse, and the fundamentals. He needs to put a little more muscle on, ...

Ridnour doesn''t have a lot of offensive game, but he''s irritating as hell as an opponent and that''s what you want. He can run plays and stuff so he would be nice.

Thanks Siccolo, not to knock on Bosh. I think if he was the number one option he would go back to being a beast. I miss making jokes about him playing for the RAPTORS. He is a great player.

I think what Stotts is doing is superb. His plays are great. I remember the only play he ever called for Meyers Leonard, against the Bobcats. Great movement, got LMA a good mid range look, got Batum a decent three look and the got Meyers way down ...

I watched Shabazz at the combine and he was a poor shooter.  In fact he did  so bad he did not even show up for drills in day two.  He may be a scorer not a shooter.  If he throws up enough shots he scores.  If someone looks a...
