    Terry Stotts Named Trail Blazers Head Coach
    An 18-year coaching veteran, Stotts most recently served as an assistant coach with Dallas for four seasons from 2008-12. Under head coach Rick Carlisle, Stotts helped lead the Mavericks to the 2011 NBA Championship.
    "Terry is one of the elite offensive minds in the NBA, has extensive experience with multiple organizations and was instrumental in the Dallas Mavericks winning the 2011 NBA Championship, said Olshey. "He understands the vision for the future of the franchise, appreciates the process involved and will create an environment on the court that will produce championship habits."
    "I'm very pleased to be a part of a great franchise in a beautiful city with such a proud history," said Stotts. "I look forward to working hard with Neil and our players toward the ultimate goal of bringing another championship to Portland."

    Excellent choice! I'm excited to see his offense being ran by D.L.!!! I think the front line of Leonard, LA, and JJ will thrive. If we can get more consistent perimeter shooting out of Matthews, Smith, Williams, and Batum to go with Lillard, I think Stotts will take this team past the first round this year. NO PRESSURE!!!

    I love this quote from Rick Carlisle - via The Oregonian
    "I had two others jobs prior to going to Dallas," Carlisle said last month. "There are a lot of inexperienced coaches who might lose four or five early games and get paralyzed. Terry wouldn't blink. It pains me to say this, but I think he's 100-percent the right coach for Portland.

    "My biggest concern then would be how do I replace him?"

    Word on coaching grapevine is that keeping Paul Allen fave Kaleb Canales on staff was pre-condition for Terry Stotts getting Blazer job

    Very excited about this upcoming season. He will help DL and LA after being around Kidd and Dirk. He has been around Caron Butler and Shawn Marion so he should be able to put Batum in a good position.

    I am glad we finally got a coach in place. I think it will take two or three years to reach the top, but I will predict that in 2014-2015 we will be in the championships. This year I think we are in the lottery one more time. To me this is not a bad thing, it makes our team better for the long haul. GO BLAZERS!!

    Seems like a no brainer, right? Hire Kaleb and get only Kaleb; hire Stotts and get both Stotts and Kaleb.

    If the rumors are true that Terry Stotts was largely instrumental in implementing the offense of the 2011 Championship Mavs (as instrumental as an assistant can be), I am glad he's here. Dallas's offense during the Finals was so much more solid and unselfish than Miami's that year.

    Also, stack up the rosters of the 2010-11 Mavs to Portland:

    Freeland   <    Chandler
    Aldridge    >    Nowitzki
    Batum       =    Marion
    Matthews  =    Stevenson
    Lillard       ~     Kidd

    Not a bad fit. Huge difference in age, but a similar makeup as far as defensive wings, post-up PF, and a PG that can shoot the lights out from 3.

    To say Aldridge is better than Dirk was in 2011 is a joke. You can make an argument for them being equal but there was a big difference between 2011 Dirk and 2012 Dirk.

    He has a deep veteran team who played good defense and shared the ball very well. Not exactly the best comparison at this point.

    what a huge disappointment. i am already disgusted with olshey and his politically motivated decisions. there is no way this was an objective hire.  i would think we would not consider candidates that have had failed stints already in the NBA. and this guy hasn't just had one failed team, he's had two.  he's already failed twice as a head coach and has a terrible W/L record, which is the bottom line.  i don't care if he "has a great offensive mind". give him a job as an assistant. this is so disappointing and olshey seems  like a real slick character. he did a great job with the draft but this coaching decision was dead wrong and i don't believe this decision was made on any sort of real merit other than who stotts chose as an agent.

    So several veteran bloggers have stated Stotts was hired with the contingency that Canales will be lead assistant. That's perfect! I'm not worried about Stotts past with the Bucks and Hawks or even Sonics...it's a new franchise and a new season. Things are falling into place and the more I look at it, the deeper our bench is looking! Go Blazers! People talk about his head coaching record but he did get a thin Bucks team into the playoffs and he does have a championship ring as an assistant! Stotts and Canales will be a great young tandem running this team and developing the young guys! Anyone know how long a contract Stotts got?

    @jwood....this is not an Olshey decision, it was a collective search with Paul Allen making the final call and I believe it was the right call. I have no complaints about any of the moves and attempts Neil has made since his hire and he had to hit the ground running. All in all a stronger organization today than it was a year ago in my opinion.

    It's not a flashy hire but it's a win-win since we get a coach who has had a hand in winning a title with the Mavericks and then we get to keep Kaleb on staff. I am excited about finally watching a team that emphasizes offense. No offense to Nate (pun slightly intended), but iso-ball put me to sleep. I love playing hard on defense, but if you don't have an offensive scheme that keeps your opponents on their toes, you're toast. Maybe not in the regular season but as we saw in the playoffs, you become too predictable and easy to defend.

    olshey is a schmoozer and a great one. why are we the only team that even considered stotts?  i'm sure he had no problem convincing paul allen that stotts was the best choice.  this reminds me of the maurice cheeks hire.
    we hired nate mcmillan because he had a roster in seattle with very average talent and turned them in to a contender.  stotts did just the opposite. he took mediocre teams and kept them mediocre.  what is there to like about that track record? i'm not trying to be a pessimist but there is absolutely no excuse for this hire when there are proven coaches (van gundys, dunleavy, mcmillan- yes i would rather just bring nate back then this guy) and assistants with such a high level of respect, not to mention a phil jackson deciple(shaw, malone) and i simply do not believe that we could not get shaw or malone. money talks.  carlisle's endorsement means nothing. they are probably close friends. of course he'd endorse him. i've been in the work force long enough to know that. i'm surprised everybody is so excited about this hire.  i feel like its a terrible decision that could set back the franchise for years. i pray to god i'm wrong here.

    A great quote from Rick Carlisle on Stotts-
     "Terry Stotts brings experience, knowledge, creativity and the reputation as a great teacher to the Portland Trail Blazers.  Paul Allen, Bert Kolde and Neil Olshey have found the perfect mentor for their young team in Terry.  He and wife Jan already have a great appreciation for the Pacific Northwest as they spent several years with the Sonics in Seattle during a very successful run during the 90's."

    @jwood. To be fair, the only coaches with winning records either already have jobs or are retired. We all would've rejoiced if Phil Jackson was hired as head coach, but the current Trail Blazers are not the 90's Bulls or the 00's Lakers, so it would've been a much harder position. It works on the flip-side with Stotts. He coached some BAD teams, and what you need to look at is the fact that those teams exceeded league-wide expectations under him. That's the real indicator of success, not the W-L record.

    Why we did not hire someone like Budenholzer baffles me but hopefully things will work out here. Then again this team did not really have any true defenders so going offensive might have been the best idea.

    You know we had a defensive minded coach that did not work. I think if he keeps Buck Williams it will be fine. As far as his W-L record as a head coach I just look at the teams and they have not done much more since he left so it is more of a player/management situation than coaching issue. I think he has a great core of people in LA, Wes and Batum along with some Talented rookies(knock on wood). So because we did not get some big name coach I am not going to freak out and do a Tibetian protest in front of the Rose Garden.

    yes cmeese. that's what i'm talking about. get a Pop desciple. we need a well rounded defensive oriented system in place not some offensive minded guru.  that's what assistants are for, to focus on one or two facets of the game. i'm sure he was a good assistant but defense wins playoff games. i was born in '78, the year after the blazers won it all.  i am dying for another title that i actually can experience and i'm skeptical we are on the right track. it just seems like we are settling for mediocrity regardless of all the great quotes about stotts, mainly from carlisle.  and he did not overachieve with the teams he coached.  he had losing records both times and was fired both times.  he has never compiled a winning season as a head coach in the NBA. the facts just do not support stotts as an A-list coach, which is what i would expect from this organization. nate's seattle team had less talent then stotts had in milwaukie or atlanta, but with much different results. we are not the bucks or the hawks or the bobcats or any of the other teams that are seemingly stuck in a bottomless pit of mediocrity.

    @jwood, im also not very excited with the stotts hire, but i dont think the sky is falling either. hopefully he gets better staff around him than house favorites. thats not a knock on canales but i want to see what stotts can do with his own staff.
    and that record is horrible. exceeding expectations or not, the bar will be infinitely higher in portland. blazers have a much higher ceiling and are a better team in my opinion. only time will tell if he succeeds or not but where there's potential there's pressure.

    stotts will utilize batum differently and i think you all will be happy.  people seem to forget that this is professional basketball. they don't all go out there and free lance.  his entire career batum has played with in the framework of nate's offense.  nate's offense. not batum's offense.  and nate has always been reluctant to use batum more offensively.
