I am gonna stick my neck out and say if Roy stayed healthy that he would of been far better then kobe. This is a pointless threat but I want your guys opinions

Nobody will ever be as good as Kobe just like Kobe will never be Michael. Lebron is all around a better player but lacks that fire, that killer instinct, the desire to win above all else, and the desire to have it all ride on your shoulders. That is what Roy did have in common with Kobe. He wanted that. If anyone has seen the documentary about Reggie Miller called "Winning Time"? Kobe, MJ, Reggie, Roy, they all rose to the occasion in winning time. I can't think of any other player in the league, besides Kobe, with as many game winners as Roy.

I think it could be a lot more tangible to talk about "If Roy had stayed healthy, could he have been better than Drexler?" or the same question about LaMarcus... there was an article at the beginning of last season, when everyone was speculating on Aldridge's ability to take the team on his back, that had some GREAT charts and numbers comparing Roy/Aldridge/Drexler and how they did in certain formative years, what kind of improvement they showed in certain years, and their learning curve/improvement over their careers. Also compared the numbers to other Blazer greats for perspective, very strong analysis. I really wish I could link the article, but from what I remember Roy showed signs of being on that level, no shocker, but surprisingly LaMarcus has quietly shown similair signs, not in game-winners or clutchness but in consistency and rate of improvement.

Anyone remember this article?

No way he would have been "far better than Kobe". Roy would have been an elite NBA player but not even as good as Kobe. As far as hero status as a Blazer, Roy would have surpassed Drexler I'm sure, although I'm not convinced he would have actually been a better player than Clyde.

Benh, you kick ass! Nicely done sir that is exactly the article I was talking about :) it's written later than I realized, February of last year, which makes sense since Roy was already "retired" and out of the running vs Drexler. Too bad that he's not smart enough to stay out of the league and rehab long enough to make a real come back... but I'll keep hoping for the best in that he somehow comes back to Portland in a few years of miraculously playing through it...

I admit to being one to criticize L-Train (and Batum) for being too soft at times that we needed them to beast up. But at least by looking at this article, maybe I can think about the idea that not all the great players are noisy attention-whores, and Portland is building a team of confident, silent assassins. If Lillard can bring back the swagger that Roy brought (and was so infectious to other members of our team), and Leonard can be our Przy (or Arvydas) 2.0, and Aldridge and Batum both step up and kill em at a slightly more consistent rate... than I say this could become one of the best rosters we've seen in a while.

When Roy was ballin out of control, he was considered the third best sg behind 1st Kobe, then Wade. At the time, i agreed. Ginobli was fourth. Even then, there was nobody id rather have the ball as a closer than Roy. Much more poised than Kobe and Wade. He was never in a rush, never panicked. Hence the moniker of the " Natural" although many of us dubbed him, The Closer. He was definitely a bad boy. He'll be missed.

Most of these superstar...rare talents are on an equal level of competitive drive and talent that is backed up by confidence. Roy, Kobe, LeBron, Duncan, the list goes on....these guys are all the rock stars of the NBA. Roy had a Mr. Natural humble nature but an incredible hunger to win. Same as Kobe but a nicer guy and much more humble about his game.

True that C. There was always an indescribable confidence in the waining moments of a close game when the ball found BRoy's hands. Nobody was better...not in this era anyway.

I hate to be the devils advocate but I always hated the way the team played when Roy was the main guy. It became the Roy show and not the Blazers. Everyone watched in awe and didn't do what they needed to do in order for the team to be better. Don't get me wrong, he was a great player but he didn't make many people around him better.

You're right schwabii, even the ref's were in awe. I see a little of that in Dame's game. Theres just a calm about the kid that is reminiscent of Roys. I love how he picks his spots before he explodes through pick and rolls. I watched him in the summer league on one occassion where he waited until the last moment before splitting the double team, and then BOOM ! explode through a crease to the rack. His dribble was so low and close to his body. I was thinking to myself, this kid is going to be special.

I'm excited for Lillard because it seems like he has the potential to be a big scorer yet is also capable of getting the whole team involved and not just going one on one the whole time.

That was definitely the problem with the Roy led teams. With someone like Roy you need to let the offense flow naturally throughout the game so that Roy can be effective in crunch time. Its a lot easier to guard Roy when you could see the (many) Iso plays coming a mile away. Part of that was not having an effective PG out there to run the show along side him. Once we did have that player in Dre, Roy was so used to being the primary ball handler that he really didn't see that he could be used more effectively. Which really wasted his talents. It's kind of like when we have to play LA at the 5. Is he going to be effective? Of course. Is he going to be able to exploit his opponent and take advantage of his skills as well as he could at his natural position? No.

As soon as Roy retired, LaMarcus became an allstar. Roy had 3 great years as the Natural but for the last 2 seasons he succeeded only in deflating McMillan's drive and refusing to buy into Andre Miller's ball movement offense. Because of him we lost a great point guard. We almost lost Batum because of the lack of movement. Roy was an unbelievable talent that could will himself to score and create with the best of them but he's far from the achievements of Kobe, Jordon or any number of greats. He did not make the team around him better...never saw a shot he didn't want to take and the team suffered from his slow down isolation method. Personally I think his next job will be similar to Jordon coming back to play with the Wizards...couple of huge games but no explosion and no veritcal leap anymore. Seemed like a nice guy until he threw Dre under the bus. He lost me that season. He has never won anything except fans at the Rose Garden and rookie of the year. Kobe has 5 rings and multiple MVPs as well as Olympic gold medals.

Im not impressed with Gortat. Everyone wants him but he seems mediorcre to me. He is the most realistic option since all it would take is the 10th pick, but I think he is old and declining.
