I have not heard anything lately, Have you? I am hoping to see Canales back, but I am waiting to see if he will be an assistant if he is not the head coach. Some people can not handle the demotion from boss to helper. I hope he is back in what ever roll there is for him in Portland. Can't wait to find out who is chosen.

It looks like Stotts has action at getting the nod. Id love to see KC get a shot, but not at the risk of becoming the scapegoat. The squad loves him, and as E.Will said, they're willing to go through a wall for him. Thats enough for me. Teams beat individual talent everytime, and if these kids play hard and together,i like our chances. Id love to see us play in the mold of the Spurs. Big time players in a small market that are tough minded and cohesive.

why aren't we considering shaw or mike malone?
why would we hire a coach with a losing record? wouldn't that kind of be something to stay away from? Stotts has a terrible record as a head coach.  the others have pretty average resumes.  seriously, can't we do better?

I hear your frustration. Shaw said thanks but no thanks, and I believe Malone declined as well. It's tough to get a proven coach when you are a sub .500 small market team with no future cap space and next years 1st round pick already traded away.

Terry Stotts and Kaleb Canales have reached the final stage of the Trail Blazers' coaching search, The Oregonian has learned.

The Blazers on Wednesday eliminated Steve Clifford and Elston Turner and will now focus on Stotts, the Dallas assistant who has been a head coach in Atlanta and Milwaukee, and Canales, the 34-year-old former video coordinator who coached the Blazers on an interim basis last season after Nate McMillan was fired.

No timeline has been set by the team to make a hire.

General manager Neil Olshey declined to be interviewed on Wednesday, the day after he concluded interviews with the final four candidates. Bert Kolde, the head of the Blazers' board of directors, and Sarah Mensah, the team's Chief Operating Officer, took part in the Monday and Tuesday interviews, but owner Paul Allen has yet to take part in the search process.

    More to come.

    Ouch !!

After his tabloid-ready tenure with the New York Knicks, Mike D'Antoni is not exactly the most respected coach in NBA circles these days. That's not to say that he's disliked, but teams are no longer knocking down his door to make contract offers as they were when he left the Phoenix Suns in 2008. His fast-paced offense just doesn't have quite the same reputation these days, even as it serves as the structure for everything Team USA does at the London Olympics.

D'Antoni, then, would do well to look into all his options. Oddly enough, that could also include coaching in college. From Dan Bickley for The Arizona Republic

    Two things...

First, I believe it a possibility that BOTH may be had.  Stots at the top, Caleb his first assistant.  Both are represented by LeGarie (as common has pointed out), Caleb would greatly benefit by first serving as a first assistant...a more traditional progression and one that would offer him a far better recipe for success.  The reality of the situation is, whomever is hired as head coach now, will be used developmentally with the young roster, then likely tossed aside with the inevitable maturation of a team looking to make the next step.  The first assistant in this, the most likely future scenario, would be then poised to take the team...a team ready for "sustainable success".  Stots has a decent offensive mind, and would find ways of getting LA quality touches...something Lillard being on the floor with him makes much easier.  The team will defend for Canales.

Second, if Canales gets the nod, Bill Bayno (now with Minny) has said publicly he would then be interested in returning to Rip City to sit alongside Caleb.  Bayno is very well respected around the league, and one of the reasons Roy chose the Timberwolves.  A Canales/Bayno tandem would be favorable imo...with this roster what it is.

Just some food for thought.  Whatever the outcome, I believe we will all know that answer by the end of this week.

This is what I was hoping for; trying to grab both, getting Stotts as head coach to give Kaleb a little more time to learn, as well as letting him focus on his duties with the players (which is his strongest tool). Then in a number of years, Kaleb can take over after having fully grown from the inside of the organization.

And that's VERY interesting about Bill Bayno. Besides being a great member to have back on our staff, it's worth noting that during the "Batum's Agent Fiasco", one of the few actual quotes that Nico did say himself was that one of his reasons that he saw the TWolves as a viable new home was due to them having (Adelman, Rubio, Roy, and...) Bill Bayno. If Batum feels a connection with this guy, I can only imagine that having him in our gym would help increase Nico's production :)

Canales would be very valuable to keep on the coaching staff, he trains and connects with the players so well. But it has got to be Stotts for head coach, and Caleb as assistant. Like BDawg pointed out, whoever gets the job will not be here after 2 years. If all goes well Portland will be an up and coming team full of talent, then we will be able to interest proven coaches. Even then I don't see Caleb moving into the head coaching position, top coaching prospect? Probably, but not for Portland they will be looking for an experienced, proven coach to take them to the next level.

Whats the likelihood that we're even granted permission to speak to Bill Bayno ? I dont like the idea of Kaleb being thrown under the bus as the scapegoat for our teams failure. Since Olshey is so high on the team growing together, shouldnt he also include KC in that equation. I agree that KC isnt quite ready to take the reigns, but he does deserve an opportunity to be groomed by a more experienced coach. We brought Price in to mentor Lillard, bring a coach in to mentor KC. Removing KC at this juncture would create a ripple effect in the Blazers pond that would take quite some time to settle. Specifically because our current roster digs him so much.

honestly, the best unemployed coach right now is nate.  these other guys they're considering are huge question marks, including kaleb.  i find it strange that Kaleb is even a candidate.  he's 34 years old and has never played a game in his life.  i'm a little confused by the whole Kaleb craze. too me, he is qualified to be a varsity high school coach and not much more. also, the fact that all the players are in love with him is not exactly a good sign to me.  it seems like more of a buddy thing to me.  i'm very skeptical of any of these candidates and now is not the time for mediocrity which is exactly what we are getting. no experience and very low success with what experience they do have.  stotts and canales both have terrible W/L records as head coaches. time to get serious.  we need a coach with a successful track record such as adelman or dunleavy.  with this young core we have it blows my mind that we are settling for mediocrity at the head coach position. i mean PJ Carlesimo is more qualified than these guys and he was awful.

I think the problem is a lack of qualified candidates. After Phil Jackson the list drops off pretty quick. I think we should have looked to the college ranks and brought up a coach more to the mold of what the management is looking for (up-tempo, tough defense).

this is ridiculous.  i haven't heard or seen any evidence that mike malone and/or brian shaw removed themselves from consideration.  can anybody provide proof of this?  i was kind of excited at the prospect of getting a direct disciple of phil jackson as a head coach, and the intrigue of it being his first head coaching job.  and if not shaw, i've heard nothing but positive things about malone. it was just a real unpleasant surprise to me that these are our choices.  olshey did good in the draft and i would give him a solid "A" but i'm becoming more and more weary of these connections through his agent, and what influence those connections have on his decision making.

I think the job has been Kaleb's all along. And I think Stotts, while a very worthy candidate, is being thrown into the mix (remember, he's a Warren Legarie client) to bring him back into the discussion for future head coaching jobs. Meanwhile, all the candidates that were interviewed -- the dog-and-pony show that included more than a dozen people -- does nothing, at least to Blazer Nation, but validate Canales as a candidate. At least that would be the hope. CSNNW.com

Someone a few days ago joked about Batum going off against the Lithuanian team. Saying " anybody can score 25 or whatever it was against Lithuania " They arent the pushovers any of us thought they were obviously. Toughest game for the U.S. squad as of yet.
