To me, he's a hybrid of Derrick Rose and Steph Curry. He's built nearly identical to Rose and has his uncanny ability to get the goal at will and finish in an array of ways. He's not quite as athletic or explosive as D-Rose but their first steps are both lightning quick. And Curry, because of Dame's long-range ability. No matter what spot of the floor he's located on, Lillard's always a threat to stop and pull up from distance. Case and point: During the Summer League game against the Hawks, Lillard got the ball on the fast break, stopped from about two feet behind the three-point line, and didn't hesitate to launch a three that found nothing but the bottom of the net.

The most common comparison is Rose, yes.
Compared to what Portland has seen here, he reminds me alot like Brandon Roy, like driving with the left hand, and the ability and confidence to pull up and create a shot.
Like Olshey has said, he has a commanding presence like Billups, with great decision making even at this young age.

Just watching the summer league,  watching a rat ball game until Lillard had the ball, he seemed to already have a veteran presence.

I don't see the D-Rose comparison like others do.

I see the Roy comparison more, and the Billups comparison. Actually, the Roy one seems most apt because of the pace, and using athleticism only when needed. The Billups more for the long range/passing/leadership.

His unique ability to literally control the floor, never rushing, is as special as it is unique.  This ability rightfully draws Roy comparisons.  However, that is as far as I'll go.

This fanbase's thirst for even the smallest drop of hope, in my opinion, can often distort reality for some.  In truth, we haven't even seen Lillard play against actual NBA talent, so without a work sample...how can we evaluate or compare.  Speculate is the word that I feel fits here better.

Lillard reminds me of DLill.  I would speculate that in 2-3 years, there may be comparisons to Lillard.  I agree with Thansen and Hoop.

I am going to hold my opinion for awhile I want to see how he plays his first 20 games against real opponents. The Chris Paul/Rondo matchup should be (hopes)legendary. He already has good vision on the court he does not need to do it all every game. The sooner he realizes this the better he will be.

So I will have to agree with BDawg and lets hold off on the statue until we get a few games in. I am excited too.

I'm w/ what Hoop#22 & Thansen36 r sayin', "so far he seems to be unique... [;] he plays like Damian Lillard."  EVERY good to great player will draw comparisons; once there is no consensus on who/what hybrid he is like (aka now), we've got a UNIQUE & SPECIAL person/player :)  It won't b long b4 future rookies r compared to Damian ;)

I see him as a westbrook/rose mix. He has better range the than Westbrook but not quite as explosive as rose. He is extremely close to the rose though no doubt. Him and Anthony Davis will be the talk for rookie MVP without a doubt.

i believe he is more like a less explosive westbrook in terms of getting to the rim and where he wants on the floor but makes smart is also a playmaker like a l. james cause he kno how to score so well that when he gets goin and they start collasping he start kicking the rock

He will be what we wished of Raymond Felton to have become. A distributor with a knock down shot that needs to be respected. I love the way this kid dribbles tightly. Seems to have the ball on a string. To be a right hander who loves to go left is Royesque. I like his chances.

In the end I think he will remind us of Damian Lillard.  Let's not go off half-cocked here.  He still has to play an NBA game first.  Don't see the Derrick Rose comparisons though, doesn't have that first step quickness.

He reminds me a lot of Roy, finishes with both hands, can break down the defender off the dribble and can hit jumpers from all over the gym.

No comparison so far has really nailed it (except "he reminds me of himself"). He is different than every name on here because he plays a different game than others.

Westbrook beats his man with speed and athleticism. He's probably faster than Lillard, and there probably isn't a better fastbreak PG in the NBA. Plus, Westbrook has a SG type mentality, so ball distribution is not a natural thing for him; it's something he had to learn. Lillard is a much more natural passer, but less of an offensive powerhouse.

Rose beats his man with acceleration and fearlessness. He didn't get 2011 MVP and lead the bulls to top Eastern records without a serious x-factor. Lillard can't even compete with Rose's street-cred, but he'll hopefully be less injury prone. Rose being the standard of modern PGs, I'm not ready to make that comparison, and it isn't accurate anyway considering the difference in their games.

D-Will beats his man with size, strength, and a fantastic handle. D-Will's stepback jumper gets him about 5 feet of space, and that's something only an agile 6-5 guard can do. Lillard is smaller, probably quicker, but less fluid than D-Will. But Lillard is already great at attacking the basket, and will be better than D-Will at finishing at the rim in a very short time.

Lillard beats his man with intelligence, tricks, and patience. There's something very mature about his game in that way. It also explains the B-Roy comparison. However, Brandon had to choose before he started his move whether he would attempt to score or pass. You could tell since there was very little last minute drop-passing or drive-and-dish scenarios from Brandon. Lillard is a natural floor general, but does it in a very different way than Nash or CP3. He also sees openings to the hoop even when he planned to pass first and sees open teammates when he thought he'd have to score. There's something instinctive about his game and his vision that is truly special. I think Lillard will make a name for himself, and his own teammates may even need to adjust because nobody has played with someone quite like him before.

Nice breakdown Dpicket. I think the only person who is not going to have a problem with DL's style will be LA. Lamarcus is not a floor leader he may be in the locker  room and by example for sure but not on the floor. He has been chomping at the bit for a pg since Andre left and he will benefit the most and will be most ready for the passes. The  other 2 starters are Batum and Wes they are going to be the ones that have to learn and vice versa. The rest of the team are pretty much rookies or rookies to the team so they will train and grow with DL's style. It is because of this after DL gets used to the NBA (which I do not think it will take too long) there will be a shake-up at the 2 or 3 position and someone will emerge about halfway through the season.

Id love to see him add " lock down defender" to his stats. But defense isnt a skill or talent, its a mentality. Youve got to commit to playing defense. If he's got that, then ive no doubt about his eventual greatness.

Common he will need to work on his lateral quickness if he is going to be a lock down defender because he does not have the size or wing span needed to completely compensate.

I would like to see him become that kind of player but I wont expect it

I know everyone says defense wins championships, but as long as he's not a matadore-type defender, I'll be fine. Honestly, who's really going to stop CP3, Nash, Rondo, Westbrook, and Rose? As long as Lillard makes it tough for them to operate and forces them to play defense on the other end of the court, I'll take it.

On the defensive point, I would just have to bring attention to his work ethic. The way he works, the kid is only going to get faster and stronger over the next 5-6 years. I really think ball-pressure, trapping, and fighting through picks is something that can not only be taught, but improved with continued work and training. Think about Lillard's background; he probably has had almost no high-level training for his defense. That will change in Portland. I think the showed that he WANTS to play defense in summer league, so that desire will translate well into learning the strategies, skills, and--most importantly--the opponents.

So you want him to get what 3 or 4 blocked shots a game? 10-12 rebounds starting out? I am pretty happy right now that he is a consistant shooter who can distribute the ball. Considering that there is not ONE consistant shooter on the team and I do include LA (who has gotten better). Going 9 for 25 is NOT a good stat. The kid looks like he can shoot the ball on a consistant basis, find the open man on a consistant basis which is something the Blazers have not had nightly in awhile. Now while you say he needs to work on defense I say before that happens he needs to learn how to get out of a double team trap situation which is going to happen alot real soon. Now he may have had a taste of it at Weber St. but that aint the NBA. As for defense do you think he is going to be able to shut down Rondo all by himself?Kobe?Rose?Chris Paul maybe.

So I guess what I am saying here is that we got a bench full of people that can play defense and most of them cant get the ball in the hole on a regular basis AND that has got us HOW many titles? Now we got a guy who can get the ball in the hole on a regular basis feed to the open man and just might turn out to be the PG that we have been bitching about needing for 4 years and we are whining because he is mediocre on defense? That is like complaining about inheriting a gold mine and crying because there aint no silver in it. I mean we did not draft Oscar Robertson for crying out loud and  if you dont know who he is look him up because that is who you want Lillard to be and even than I think some of you would bitch.

I hope so too. From what I saw at Summer League, I don't think he's too far away. He has that unmeasurable "it" factor that all the greats seem to have. He just makes the game look so easy which is what All-Star caliber guys do.
