This is a great article by Kelly Dwyer

I agree with everything he is saying. Olshey needs to get this right.

The Portland Trail Blazers don't have a coach. For their basketball team. You kind of forget as much, this late into July. Especially with new GM Neil Olshey neck deep in a significant rebuilding project that has seen him sign off on two lottery picks and committing eight-figure yearly money to employing Nicolas Batum. You'd assume the Blazers would want to know what coach would be leading all these guys, the guy who would be making the day-to-day and minute-to-minute movements on the fly while Olshey can only watch from above.

i'm thinking they're going to end up keeping canales as head coach. i was wondering why bigger names like brian shaw haven't been cropping up but then i keep seeing the players endorsing kaleb. i think if the players really have their heart set on someone already within the organization that's so highly regarded you'd normally go with that guy. my only doubts are his inexperience as a head coach. then again they'd know better than me. i just hope it doesn't become a distraction if somebody other than kaleb gets hired.

Agreed, Kaleb has a tireless work ethic and considering he was put into a no win situation with the whiners of felton and crawford he did a comendable job and I think he deserves the shot.  He is young, hungry and is a student of the game.  It would be great to see him grown and mentor this team into a contender.

Kaleb really does have potential, and if his strongest competition is Stotts, it seems like the advantage should go to the guy who's already in the Organization, and the players already have a relationship with... I mean, if you put aside all the coaching aspects like technical experience, winning records, etc, what it is always going to come down to is how well the Coach can push his players and get their best basketball games out of them. If our roster really does stand behind him, there might be good reason to keep them together.

On the other hand, I don't think there's any reason we couldn't keep Kaleb as an Assistant Coach, allowing him to focus on his relationship with the players and what he's best at, and bring in a slightly more experienced coach (even Stotts) to run the floor until Canales has a little more of a resume... I mean, if we think Kaleb would be potentially good as HC this season, couldn't he be just as good or better with a partner/mentor HC for one more season?

i was thinking the same thing, but who hires a head coach for only 1 year? especially for a rebuilding team. it wouldn't really be fair to give someone only one season and say turn this team around or we'll hire someone else.

I think a 3 year deal for K. Canales is going to happen very soon.

Perhaps Turner as head coach to teach defense and Canales as 1st assistant?

I agree.  Can anyone tell me how many head coaches there are (or have been) that have never served as a first assistant?  As much as I like his energy, passion, and overall commitment to the team...like many, I don't feel Canales is ready.  The fact that he seems to be friends with everyone on the roster is a bit alarming to and I see that as a guaranteed implosion down the road.  Is Caleb THAT good to be the first, or one of just a handful of coaches EVER to lead a team without first being a lead assistant?

Right now, the most realistic is Asik. If Houston pursue D12, sign and trade JJ and a couple second round picks, maybe Joel Freeland or somebody for Asik.

Nah, Washington would just sign him themselves, save them a pick. Also, no way JJ is worth a lottery pick. Oladipo would be great, for pretty much any team in the NBA. I don''t think it''s possible to get him though. Should focus on getting a defe...

Jermaine O''Neal, Drazen, Z-Bo, Sheed (I know he was already a star but still). Also Drazen was buried under Drexler and Porter.

What happens if we don''t win? Dwight will start his nonsense, we would be out a lot of money, and with no real talent to show for it. San Antonio and Memphis is proof that you don''t need superstars to win.
