Love Canales, but his issue is that he has an A+ resume for being an assistant coach, but not much that convinces me that he's the kind of guy that could drive us to the WCF in a few years).

My gut tells me they hire Stotts.  Not crazy about his track record (mostly losing records?), but I'll be they lean that way.

Stotts by far has the best resume', but he obviously doesnt have the " IT " factor. Carlisle gave him a glowing endorsement but what else would he say. A parent would never tell a stranger that they have bad kids.

I say keep Coack K. He's got the name for it. More importantly is that the Blazers dig him. And they respect his ethics. He shows these guys that he trust them. If your players trust you, they'll play hard for you. The majority of the players have already said they'd like to see him as their coach, now lets give them the opportunity to show us why they believe him to be the guy.I like him. I say give him a full season to show us what he's made of. If it doesnt work out, the Van Gundy brothers will be all but done with their sabatical and they would have had a whole year to assess our squad objectively from afar.

None of the above...but if I had to choose from those four it would have to be Stotts. I would take Canales over Turner or Clifford. I think if this is truly the case Stotts will be the next coach of the Blazers.

Seems like it's been near impossible to get any sincere quotes from the Front Office about who their candidates are for coaching, I don't think I'd seen much of anything confirmed until they were actually setting up the interview... so where exactly did you get this info that these 4 guys are our only 4 candidates at this point? I heard Shaw was out, but what happened to Malone? That still seems like a great idea if it's possible that we'd be getting Phil Jackson as President...

Please link your source if you have info like this!

It seems like the front office is doing everything they can to guarantee Kaleb keeps his job.

My immediate reaction to the four finalists was one of disbelief.  How could we interivew up to twelve candidates and end up with these four.  I am affraid I would have to go along with cmeese47 and assume the blazers want Kaleb to get the job.  What is his coaching philosophy?  If the final eight games of the season reflects his philosophy then I hope he does not get the job.  All of the players endorse Kaleb but they were not winning under his direction.  It is hard to get enthusiastic about a young team and a young coach Max wins 26.  I wish I knew what Olshey was looking for in these individuals that put them above the rest.

Enticed by Turner. He helped the Suns defensively and he's been around Steve Nash so he can pass along a few things to Lillard.

Thank you :) and actually, from reading that article, I'm a little less worried about not having any big names in the group. There's alot of things that could be passed to this Blazer squad that could be key help; offensive efficiency and experience transitioning from over seas; building offense from rock solid defense; familiarity with our players and knowing how to get them to respond...

any of those could be the key, and it's not as rare as people think recently, look at Chicago and Miami...

Of those four, Turner is the only candidate that has both experience AND the ability to relate to the players (as a former player himself).  Agree with Hawes.

Grading Cannolli on his coaching ability for the end of last season would be like telling the New Penn State coach that he has to get to a bowl game next year or be fired. He was evaluating players and that was all he was doing.

I know I am going to get beat up for this but outside Cannolli  I have not heard of any of these guys and I had to look up Canales when he took over last year. Since there seems to be no confirmation to the rumor I will hold off until it comes public.

I think Neil and Paul are doing exactly what they said they'd do....find a coach that develops young players. I think Canales has had the job all along but Stotts will give him some competition. Give the office credit..they talked to Sloan and Jackson. We don't have enough seasoned vets to have a Nate-type coach that won't play the bench. Anyone who thinks we're going for a title this season is delusional. It's a surprise me season with a rookie roster...all I can hope for is that it's a fun, competitive team to watch. Word is that Stotts is the next Tom Thibideau. Canales is an x and o guy who is terrible with the media post game, but some great coaches had that trait.....Popovich and Sloan are two. I'm personally glad we're not targeting D'Antoni or Van Gundy. When Sloan opted out, I ran out of championship caliber coaches to match our team. Last season is no parameter for what Canales can do...nor any coach without a preseason and considering the lockout..he stepped up and lost games in sacrifice mode to get an in depth look at JJ, Thabeet, Babbit, Nolan, etc...coaches have to start somewhere...even the greats were rookie coaches once

Agreed, Riverman. The article definitely makes me feel better about these four as options, but I think it's gotta be Canales or Stotts. And don't worry, the only ones who think we absolutely NEED a big name coach are the ones who also think we're a worthless team without more big name stars. Trades and contracts are just part of the scheming, they don't win games, hard-working athletes do! Like you said, this should be an exciting season to watch, and hopefully full of surprising success. I'd have no problem with the next Thibideau or the next Spoelstra coaching our team.

So the rundown that I'm hearing about the potential HC's:

Stotts: Offensive Powerhouse. NBA coaching for 20 years.
-Only candidate with HC experience (but didn't do too well).
-Euroball experience (connection with Batum, Claver, Freeland).
-Credited as the offensive innovator for Dallas' title run (transfer to a LaMarcus offense).

Canales: Player's favorite. Video intern in '04, NBA coaching for 4 years.
-Players trust him on- and off-court and say he's not as soft as everyone thinks (Wesley: "Every single player... wants to be coached by this guy").
-Watches more video than any coach since Spoelstra (New-school coaches are more frequently coming from the video department).
-Has shown results in Summer League (8-2 record over 2 years), and instant chemistry with this year's rookies (including Lillard/Leonard combo).

Clifford: VanGundy disciple. NBA coaching for 12 years.
-Compared to Tom Thibodeau (who also was an unkown until his first HC job with Bulls).
-Known for his teaching ability and calm demeanor (useful with a young team during hard road trips or season low-points).
-Has experience with the "side pick'n'roll" (transfer to Aldridge/Batum).

Turner: The "Done-It-All" candidate. NBA coaching for 15 years (including 4 in Portland).
-Well-rounded and soft spoken (perhaps too much, and maybe the biggest reason he has yet to be an HC after being a candidate 5 times).
-Known as defensively minded (took Suns from 29th to 18th in Defense in 1 year, that kind of improvement would be great for Portland), but has worked 10 years under Rick Adelman (offensive strength).
-Experience with Steve Nash (transfer to Lillard).

That's just the basics that I think they are each bringing to the table and how it could help us... and I still feel like the best thing we could do would be to keep Canales as an Assistant Coach for one more year, which would benefit the players because he wouldn't have to split time between his duties with them and his duties as HC, and would benefit the team because he'd be a stronger HC further down the line when he's learned under more than just McMillan.

If we can get Canales in as the Assistant, than I think I like Turner or Stotts more than I like Clifford (similair to Kaleb, he's only worked under the VanGundy's, which could narrow his mind on coaching a different team on his own), and his biggest upside (comparison to Thibs) is all speculation so far... but that's not to say that there isn't speculation with the other candidates as well.

We've seen with players that sometimes it can come down to seeing them in person/video being interviewed before you really can tell if they have that certain dynamic. I don't suppose that we'll have access to the job interviews, but at least with Olshey when we finally saw him speak it personally gave me a lot more confidence in who he was going to be. Has anyone seen any of the candidates (besides Kaleb) in action where they might show that spark?

I was a little disheartened when I saw this list, not because I think we'll be getting a bad coach, but it tells me all the hot-commodity coaches are avoiding Portland like the plague. Ouch.

I say go with Canales, He's now coached almost everyone on the roster except for Claver, Freeland, Jeffries, and Price. I don't see a single coach that will get 10-15 more wins than the next candidate, so picking experience over the in-house favorite would be without substance. I get that Kaleb hasn't seen it all like maybe Stolts has, but considering this team is all 21st-century ballers, maybe the 20-year guy will end up in a counter-productive "push me, pull you" situation.

Everyone seems to think that the players endorse Kaleb because he is easy on them, but look at the players saying this: LaMarcus, Wesley, Nolan, Elliot, Nic. These are all guys that work hard and want to WIN. Are they really going to endorse a coach so they can be lazy? It doesn't add up. If we had a team like Washington or Orlando did the last couple years, I wouldn't trust the team. Even if we still had Felton and Crawford, I would be hesitant. But all of the guys on this roster are about the team and the W column. They think Kaleb will get the team the most wins... don't we want that?

Hopefully Elston Turner or Stotts. Would like Terry S. because he has coached a championship team and has experience with a all star PF in Nowiski (we have LA).

Turner would help our D. He also has been around Nash. Will help Lillard. After reading these comments im kinda leading towards ETurner now because he has been around Nash, and LA dosent really need anymore coaching lol. Def have Kaleb as a assistant tho.

I like what you're saying Pickett but I just don't know how much of Kaleb's coaching should be about head coach vs assistant coach... then again, if we can do what Common said and get Canales as HC, then Stotts as an Offensive Coach and Turner as a Defensive Coach? Someone call Paul!
