    Great Article from Oregon Live

    I love the idea.

Joel Przybilla is the 'perfect mentor for Joel Freeland and Meyers Leonard'

In the eight seasons that Joel Przybilla has played for the Portland Trail Blazers, one thing has became clear: He is certainly a fan-favorite. By and large, fans have grown to love 'Przy' for his grit and in-your-face style of play. Now, after the Blazers drafted what many hope will be their center of the future in Meyers Leonard at No. 11, the question remains: Should the team bring back Przybilla to serve as Leonard's mentor?

I like the Gorilla, he gives us toughness when we need it and he can give us a good 10 to 15 minutes per night.

As far as the center position currently goes, the Blazers currently have bigs J.J. Hickson, Joel Freeland, Jared Jeffries and even LaMarcus Aldridge who can play there, if needed.

Give him a veterans minimum contract and bonuses based on how Freeland and Leonard Perform

This could be a great solution.

I love Joel and what he's brought to the Blazers, on and off the floor. My concern this year is that the level he can perform ON the floor wouldn't be beneficial to our game... but what he can bring OFF the floor hasn't changed at all. If we sign him as a Player Coach, I'm pretty sure that doesn't affect our cap, and it wouldn't use up a roster spot... what restrictions are there on those kind of hires?

...This is also what should have been done with Brandon. Just to keep him here in the Organization would've been worth it, at least until he was ready in two years... obviously it's dreaming, but just sayin.

It is a great wish but Since the salary cap was instituted prior to the 1984–85 season,[4] the NBA has prohibited teams from employing a player-coach.[5] The ruling was established to avoid the possibility that a team would circumvent the cap by signing a player as a player-coach, as coaches' salaries are not counted under the cap.

It sucks, but ask Joel to retire and pay him $1m a year to groom our new centers to be tough and play with heart and sacrifice thier body for the love of the game.  If they want him as a player, sign him quickly.

Sorry I think from your post that I misused the Player Coach title, I don't mean for him to be on the floor at all. I want him purely in some form of a coaching role for our bigs. Does THAT affect the cap or our roster?

I'm saying that I'm hesitant to sign him as a player at all, not that I want to rush and sign him to take up a roster spot. Why can't we get him to groom our new centers as you said without being as a player on our roster?

No cap on what you can pay coaches. BM thats a great idea. Hire him, and put him on the bench next to Canales. He wont put on much wear and tear if he's beasting our new bigs in practice. He could be really valuable to us.

Blazer247 I agree. He is too much of question mark to sign as a player. He just hasn't been the same since his knee injuries. He would not be beneficial on the floor for our team. But as a player coach he would be a good influence for our bigs. He should definatley retire a blazer and coach our bigs if possible.

Sign Przybilla 1 year as a player then next year sign him as an assistant or sign Sabonis now as assistant coach of forwards and centers. between the 2 of them Leonard, Hickson and Freeland will learn a lot.

Absolutely.   Give him a players contract for 1 year with veterans minimum with the condition that he retires at the end of this seanson and the convert his contract to a coaches ontract and sign him for three years.  He is too valuable to let go.

Why do we have to resign him as a player and take a roster spot for a year? As a player he's just not going to fit in the team, he's going to stand out like a sore thumb to offenses and they'll take advantage of him every minute he's on the court.

Are we not able to just give him a coaching contract and let him work with our young bigs in practice? Seems like that's what we all want him for, not his floor game, so why waste a roster spot?

Loyalty in pro sports is a rare thing but in Joel's case, he's earned it. I want him to retire a Blazer and even take over as a big man coach AKA Buck's job last year. Babbit is the weak link on this team now. There's not one player on the roster I'd sacrifice for him. Send Babbit to the D league and sign Joel as a mentor and guy you can rely on to defend veteran centers like Bynum and Howard. Joel is foul prone so there will be plenty of minutes for Freeland and Leonard. Hickson and Jeffries can play the 5 as well. When we want to play small ball, we're stacked with forwards who can run the court. I'm really happy about the direction of the team so far. Kaleb may be too close to Luke Babbit after all the time they've spent in the gym but that's the drawback with him coaching. Somewhere a blogger wrote that Kaleb should head coach the Stampede because his thing is developing young players...in the case of Babbit..I don't think it worked. He had a 3pt shooting fest for 19 games last season but did not play defense or even show up in summer league as a veteran. Sasha Pavlovich would school the guy. I think Victor Claver would school the guy. With Hickson able to play the 4 or 5..Babbit's furniture this season. Time for a yard sale!
