Trades can easily change the fortunes of a franchise. Portland has made a few trades this summer and passed up on a few more. There have been a lot of threads talking about these trades and numerous others with trade suggestions. I have posted my fair share and so I know how hard it can be to follow all of these threads, which is why I wanted to make a single thread to continue the discussion.

Here are the deals from the Summer.

New York Knicks acquired G Raymond Felton and F Kurt Thomas from the Portland Trail Blazers for F Jared Jeffries, C Dan Gadzuric and the draft rights to F Kostas Papanikolaou and G Giorgos Printezis, and a protected future second-round draft pick.

Felton was not coming back anyways so essentially we got two players to stash in Europe, Jared Jeffries , and a protected second-round pick rumored to be 2016 for Kurt Thomas. That was not a bad haul. The odds that any of the pieces outside of Jeffries makes any impact for Portland are slim but swapping Thomas for a more traditional center makes sense for the organization, especially since NY paid most of Jeffries salary.

Houston Rockets traded G Courtney Lee to Boston for F JaJuan Johnson, G E'Twaun Moore and F-C Sean Williams and a 2013 second-round draft pick. Acquired the rights to G Job Diebler from Portland and Boston sent G-F Sasha Pavlovic to Portland.

This trade basically saw us trade Diebler for Pavlovic. Dieber was just going back to Europe after summer league so his loss is not large but the addition of Pavlovic is puzzling considering the depth Portland already has at the two and the three. You cannot cut Pavlovic cause then you gave up Diebler for nothing. So unless Portland is planning on moving Luke Babbitt or Elliot Williams in a trade or demoting Barton or Babbitt to D-League, I do not see the playing time.

Rumored Minnesota Timberwolves trade F Derrick Williams and two protected future first-round draft picks from the Portland Trailblazers for SF Nicolas Batum.

Unless the protections were severe on the picks, which is unknown but was rumored to be lottery protection in 2013 and a top 20 protected in 2015 then Portland dropped the ball badly on this decision. Batum is a fine player who has loads of potential but the 11.6 million he is scheduled to make and the enormous trade kicker in his contract make him an asset that will either make or break Portland over the next 4 years. It will get worse if the league determines we owe reconciliation for not disclosing Martell Webster’s injury, which Minnesota was willing to drop as part of any trade for Batum. If Portland has no faith in their ability to sign free agents next season then the signing of Batum was essential, I am just not sure that was the case here.

Are you happy with these trades or do you think we need to do more? Got a trade in mind post it and let’s see how well you wear the GM hat.

The Rockets will receive a second-round pick in next year's draft from Boston, via Charlotte and send that to Portland and the rockets also give Portland another second round pick in 2013. The Rockets receive forward JaJuan Johnson, guard E'Twaun Moore and forward/center Sean Williams. Houston will also acquire the rights to guard Job Diebler from Portland. The Celtics completed the deal by trading guard/forward Sasha Pavlovic to Portland. The Celtic's get Lee from the Rockets.

Did not see that but if that is the case then we traded Diebler for 2 second round picks and that is a good haul especially if Charlotte's pick via Boston and Houston ends up in the low to mid 30's.

I would have done that deal too. However I'm not convinced that that package was on the table. If you remember it was Kahn himself that said Olshey turned down Williams and two 1st's. Olshey has said that a lot of what has been reported has been inflated, both the contract size and what Minny was actually offering. I think we have the pieces to pull of a big trade, we need to find that player who can be had like we did with Wallace. Maybe Matthews, a 1st, and two 2nds for Iggy.

What kind of return do you guys think we can get for Luke Babbitt? I do not see him returning much more than a second round pick or end of the bench type vet unless he is part of a larger package.

I agree that Babbitt would have to be part of a larger group to get value, but I think it is worth looking into. The 2 second rounders for Diebler were reported by ESPN news, I have not seen anything since except a single 2nd rounder does anyone know anything?

If you had your choice of any center in the league to trade for, who would you choose, and who would you trade from our team to get that center?
    My choices are.......

    1. M. Gortat @ 2years/7.258 million from Phoenix
we give Matthews, Babbitt, Gadzuric, and Pavlovic.
    2. T. Mozgov @ 1year/3.1 million   or    K. Koufos @ 3 years/3 million Denver
we give Babbitt, Gadzuric, and Pavlovic.
    3. A. Bargnani @ 3years/10 million Toronto
we give Matthews, Babbitt, Gadzuric, Pavlovic, and a 2014 second rounder.

Option 1 or 2 are very possible Phoenix could use the extra bodies and Denver's players are both backups, option 3 would be hard to pry free of Toronto thus the second rounder added.
Do you agree with any of these trades or do you have a suggestion of your own?

If you would like to check your trade for legality go to this web site at ESPN trade machine and it will tell you who can be traded from each team and if the trade can be done according to NBA league rules. if nothing else it is very fun............      http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine

Thank you mbmurr for the ideas to discuss.

Now to address this I do not see Gortat going anywhere. Phoenix has quietly built a very solid line up.

With G. Dragic, J. Dudley, M. Beasley, L. Scola and M. Gortat they have a solid starting unit. Not quite as strong if Dudley plays the three and S. Brown starts but still nice. Plus they have nice depth at a few positions.

Here are some trade ideas from Dexter

    1. Blair for Pavlovic and draft picks. Spurs don't want Blair, but they are hungry for draft picks.

    2. Splitter for Babbit, Gadzuric, Pavlovic.

    3. Dalembert for Gadzuric, Pavlovic, Babbit and Williams. (for Portland this isn't best, -1 wins for us)

Matthews, Babbit, Future Second Rounder to Chicago
Derozan  and future first rounder to Portland
Deng and Portlands future 1st rounder to Toronto

This is what I wish would happen. Derozan is a great 2 guard and since Toronto drafted Terrance Ross hes on the market. Deng has been on the Market for a while. I feel Derozan would be worth giving Picks and Matthews for.
Derozan slashing and Batum and Lillard shooting than having LA. Blazers would be soo scary.

Maybe Balzers look to add cap space to try to get Derozan next year in free agency.

Here is a plan Portland should trade Lamarcus Aldridge for Derrick Favors and a first round pick.

Favors will be an all-star in two years and by then Lillard and Leonard will both start reaching their potential. Additionally, Favors would represent around 8 million in cap savings next summer which would allow Portland to make a max contract offer to James Harden.

Gadzuric has been waived already I believe...just send Babbit to Idaho and sign Pryzbilla allowing the rookies to get some burn this season. We have until early next year to trade players that aren't panning out..no rush there.

Since we have already requested waivers on Gadzuric is he available to be traded?  I am very reluctant to post a trade before I see how the current roster comes together.  We migbt be trading a player that is instrumental in the good play of the blazers.  I would recommend a wait and see approach for now.  Trades would be more defined in Jan.

Ricky by requesting waivers Portland starts a 48 hour clock for interested teams to claim the player can do so otherwise they become an unrestricted free agent.

    Mbmurr suggests
We have only six players, possibly five who by league rules, are allowed to be traded. L.A., Matthews, Babbitt, Smith, Williams, and Gadzuric if he has not been waived. I will assume we will keep at least L.A. 14,000,000.00/3 years because he is a cornerstone of the team, Smith 1,365,720.00/3 years  and Williams 1,442,880.00/2 years due to their quality and cheap contracts. This leaves ...............
    Matthews 6,505,320.00/3 years,
    Babbitt 1,892,280.00/2 years,
    Gadzuric 1,352,181.00/1 year

This does not leave much (under 10 million) to work with as far as trades are concerned and we have $0 trade exceptions.
I think our team is standing pat without any trades for now, we might sign Przybilla to a 1 year deal.

    What are your thoughts?

the only one that seem to make sense was the trade with the knicks besides that all the others didnt make no sense because we didnt get anything in return. and if we got that D. Willaims offer i love N. Batum but tha offer was a bueatiful one and if that wasnt the offer i believe we should try and make that happen! come on GM lets get it done we have some of the most talented players on our roster and if we put them together correctly then we can get something real nice in return.

I doubt that Blazers have any chance at getting Harden. DOnt think we would trade to a division rival and we would have to free up space. I would like to see us trading for Rudy Gay then have Batum at the 2Guard. Maybe if Bynum becomes a UFA we can trade some assets and clear cap to sign him. If he isnt part of any DH12 deal than Im pretty sure he is leaving and if we can find enough $ to offer him max no way LA can match. Would be so awesome to fuck over Lakers!!

Lakers own Bynum's bird rights meaning they can easily offer him a max deal which they will if they cannot sign Howard.

If we could clear the cap space we would have a much better shot at Harden who might not be resigned by a Thunder team not looking to go deep into the luxury tax.

Also I thought that Bynum is a UFA....And he has shown little interest to return to LA. But he might change his mind after playing with Nash lol.

I would LOVE to see Harden as our starting SG. Just hate watching those stretches when we lose a good player like Wes to clear cap then our team takes a big hit. But then we get a higher draft pick and have space for FA.

The Lakers are the highest revenue generating team in the NBA they could not care less about the luxury tax which is evident by their 98 million dollar payroll this season. The Thunder on the other hand are a small market team, which is why they are much more concerned with the tax than the Lakers.
