Former Utah Jazz coach Jerry Sloan is no longer a candidate to coach the Portland Trail Blazers, despite interviewing for the position Wednesday in Salt Lake City, according to a report on

"I talked to them yesterday," Sloan told the website. "But it just didn’t work out on my part."

Blazers General Manager Neil Olshey reportedly flew to Salt Lake to visit with Sloan, who told Fox Sports Florida he considered the sit-down a formal interview.

Sloan similarly was a finalist to coach the Charlotte Bobcats earlier this summer before pulling out of consideration. The Bobcats later hired St. John’s assistant Mike Dunlap. Sloan told Fox Sports Florida he has not spoken to Orlando about its coaching vacancy. The Magic are the only other team with a coaching vacancy.

The Blazers are seeking a replacement for interim coach Kaleb Canales. They fired Nate McMillan in March.

Sloan stunningly resigned as the Jazz’s coach in February of 2011, citing burnout, but this spring publicly expressed an interest in returning to coaching.

Maybe now Olshey will reach out to Brian Shaw or D'Antoni.

We have a young team why not Kaleb?

Kaleb COULD be a good head coach, if the whole team continues to listen to and respect him, and if he suddenly shows a lot of unexpected strategy and knowledge on how to run a team. I'm saying there's no question that he can inspire the players and get them to perform, but that's very different from saying that he can draw up offensive plays and make adjustments during games (or playoff series) like an experienced, vet coach could. So yes, Canales COULD be a good head coach, or he could not.

On the other hand, since the one thing we know that he's good at is pushing and inspiring our players... that sounds like he'd be a surefire great move as an ASSISTANT coach, while we pull someone in at the head with more experience, knowledge and know how.

Yes we have a young team but the problem with that will be that they can get scrambled. The last thing we need is a coach who won't be able to pull them out of that and get them organized again during a game. I'm a big Kaleb fan, but I want him doing what he's best at, not trying to stretch himself into a position he's not entirely prepared for.

Kaleb is a fine coach but quite frankly, if the front office is serious about rebuilding this team, then an interim guy who's younger than some of his players with basically 0 professional coaching experience is just not going to cut it.  Olshey has shown he's serious about kicking this team into gear, so by all means he should go ahead with the search for an experienced guy to bring maybe a slightly different outlook and spark.  Kaleb will hopefully continue to thrive in his element as a top assistant, and we'll see how he goes from there. He's just not ready yet. I agree with Blazer247.

Kaleb should never be and I hope doesnt become the Blazers next Head Coach! We need a coach with experience, and one that knows how to develop young and vetern talent. The Blazers dont have time and I am talking years to sit and wait for players to develop when you have a coach who hasnt developed either and doesnt know how to lead players when he has nothing to bring to the team either. I see why Jerry Sloan didnt want to come to the Blazers or Charlotte. He sees exactly what I am talking about. He doesnt have time to waste trying to build something when he can clearly see all the pieces arent there and at his age doesnt have time to waste on that. Portland needs a leader and a coach with true experince like D'Antoni or someone younger like Golden States assistance coach Mike Malone. Someone who is willing to put the neccessary time in to coach the veteran and young talent that the Blazers Neil Oshey is trying to aquire. Portland also needs to be more aggressive in that free-agent market. They are letting Hibbert and Brook Lopez just get taken out of there hands for one and other players like Eric Gordon, Goran Dragić. GET SERIOUS BLAZERS!! Also I would like to add, they MUST re-sign J.J. Hickson!! If Portland doesnt do these things they will be a 50/50 team next year guarenteed and we will be asking ourselves why again!

    LOL @ Jake.

Doesn't seem like you really say anything directly about the coaching scenario, just beat around the bush, so I'll just leave that one.

More aggressive in the free agent market? We were prepared to offer a max deal to 2 bigs, but neither worked out because bigs are rare, and we forced their teams to overpay for them, locking up those team's cap-space for years to come. It's not the ideal result for us, but not horrible either as far as competition down the line as the CBA comes into effect. We didn't let them "just get taken out of (our) hands", we did what we could and the other team had the final say, similair to the situation we're in with Batum. Gordan and Dragic - nothing we could do about that, so what's the point you're making?

HAHAHAHA, Hickson got resigned yesterday and we've been posting about it / celebrating on here for the like 24 hours. Glad to see you're caught up :)

Hawes will be a hot commodity by the trade deadline, I would think the sixers could find a better offer.

However, I do believe Mo Williams could have somewhat of  a high trade value. Olshey needs to make a deal to get a big man while we...
