Smart Move for Portland.  It gives us agressiveness in the Paint.

Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports reports on Twitter that the Portland Trail Blazers have agreed to resign unrestricted free agent forward J.J. Hickson to a 1-year contract.

Outstanding compliment to LaMarcus off the bench. This tandem is more efficient than people give it credit for. Two entirely different styles at the pf spot. The L-Train finesses them with agility and grace. Then we hit you with the " Hick ". Just comes and and gets it done. I like this cat Olshey. Reach out to Brian Shaw,Gary Payton, and Patrick Ewing and we can make something of this riff raff.

This is absolutely the ideal situation (1yr, 4mil). The prospect of losing Hickson for nothing after he had such a great finish to the season bothered me a bit. Although, at the same time I worried that he was a prime candidate to be one of the unfortunate, but all too common cases of a player who is given long term security, only to mail it in afterwards. This keeps both Hickson and the Blazers management on their toes. Extremely happy with this. Also, as cmeese47 pointed out, this is a total bargain. I figured $6mil was the potential floor of this deal. Second bargain of the day. The deal Claver signed was a pleasant surprise, as well.

I'd pleaded in another thread to match or pay whatever it takes to keep him because he really was the one shining spot for Portland amidst all the injuries and problems down the stretch last year.  He put up career numbers in the 19 minutes in which he saw extended playing time.

My biggest worry with Hickson is how much playing time he's going to get with LA, Meyers, potentially another center.  Because I really believe if Hickson were to get starter minutes, he would emerge as a 20/10 guy, I really believe that.  And in a few years, if he continues to be held back, he's going to find his place with someone... it would be a shame if Portland doesn't utilize him this coming year because they'll lose him and then Portland fans are going to shit bricks in 3 years when they see how good he is.

LaMarcus, for the last 2 seasons, has slid to the 5 often. I get the feeling JJ and LA will be on the court together for 10-12 minutes a game, plus JJ will give LaMarcus about an 8-10 minute rest. Then he's getting 18-22 minutes in a 6th-man kind of role.

The other 36-38 minutes at the 5 position will probably be shared by Meyers Leonard and a veteran (Prz or other). Depending on the veteran center that comes in, I could have confidence in that rotation for the front court.

A lot of people seem to think of JJ as a 3/4 kind of forward. I really think he's more of a pure PF, and if he does take on a secondary position, it would probably be center before SF. He's the kind of guy whose damage is done in the post; he can't be shoved out to the wings because it will interfere with his rebounding and tenacity.

As long as the Batum situation doesn't leave us without a starting-caliber SF, I think each position can have a pretty decent rotation and allow for some versatile/situational combinations.

^^^^ Each position can have a decent rotation IF we also bring in a veteran PG to back up and mentor Lillard.

And I forgot to include Freeland and Claver in that rotation. Oh well. The point is LA doesn't have to play 42 minutes, and JJ will get playing time both with and without LaMarcus on the floor.

With the Blazers not getting Hibbert, it was a must to get someone is fearless and can bang inside. Nice player, one of the few on the team who has proven he could compete with the NBA.

The best move so far as I see it!!. JJ HIckson and Aldrigde will and should play on the court together and with this many high potential players, that can all rotate positions, between all the C/PF, PF/SF, and SG/SF, we have more flexibility. I  think if we resign pryzbilla  and get a veteran PG too, And we would surprise a lot of people, and do way better then people expect. Plus with the athleticism, heart character and focus Meyers Leonard has, I think we will see a starting caliber center out of him sooner then people think. I already can't wait for next season. Even though we have to wait for the Batum saga, and for a coach and prez.

I am all in on that year signing, i was kinda surprised they waited to offer anythng as long as they did, I thought Hickson impressed alot of us Blazers fans at the end of last season, He is a great fit in Portland and he has heart and Hustle! Money well spent... Kudos Portland!!

I have always been a Hickson fan, going back to his CLE days, so not surprising that I was happy to hear of his signing.  I do however want to caution that there is a noteworthy distinction between loving a player, and loving said player's performance during a given season.

Here's something I personally need help with.  Based on Hickys on court performance both in CLE and here in P"town last season, I find it very peculiar that the man can't seem to get a long term deal.  CLE, SAC, and now POR.  What is it about JJ Hickson that we as fans are missing?  His game is beastly and rare in todays NBA and there is a shortage of bigs not afraid to bang.  Look at some of the contracts being dealt recently to far less impactful players.  Curious.

This should have been first priority this is a guy WE KNOW can take over LA's spot. I am rather suprised at the deal but maybe they talked to him and decided they we would try to leave both parties options open? If he gets any better he is going to have people banging at the door to get his signature before the year is out.

This gives us an opportunity to gage his performance for a whole season. If he stays consistent, then he's entitled at a long term contract. he's the right age. 23 i think, so it fits Olsheys plans to keep our roster around the same age.
