Blazers tweeted that Summer League for Portland tips off Sunday 7:30 PM on Comcast 37.

I don't have comcast, but am watching a summer league game with OKC and Boston now.  Thabeet's on the side watching.  Pretty exciting to see the draft picks of this year and the past few years going at it.  This tournament is in Orlando and today is the first day... ends on the 13th, then another tourney begins in Vegas.... that's the one Portland will be in.   Boston is the only team that's participating in both leagues.

anyway, it'll be our first chance to check out the rookies.  The way the announcers are talking, we should be able to see Portland on NBA Network, but not sure.  I know the blazers have some garbage deal with comcast that allen couldn't get out of, so I don't what'll be on directv for sure.

The rookies (Lillard, Leonard, Barton), plus Elliot Williams, Luke Babbitt, Wesley Mathews... probably Nolan Smith too?

Officially nothing's been announced, but if there's minimum roster requirements, Portland may not meet the criteria yet.  I heard undrafted guard Dee Bost is trying to make the team and he's going to workout.  Also heard Matthews will be there.  The 3 draft picks, Nolan, Babbitt, and Elliot if healthy should all be there.

I wouldn't be surprised if there's 2 or 3 more undrafted players asked to participate.

Ekene Ibekwe just touched down in Portland a bit ago.  I don't know if any of you know him, but was a 4 year player at Maryland, and he's since been overseas, most recently with a german team.  He'll be 27 on the 19th. He was on Portland's summer league team 2 years ago.  So now we get to see how much further he's progressed.  I wouldn't say this is his last shot, but it may be his best chance to make the roster.  Of course we're not on the inside to know what's going to happen with Batum for sure.  But this guy could provide some depth.  keep an eye on him... I follow him on twitter.  @Ebeks25

reported on trailblazers.tv that Elliot Williams is not yet cleared for contact, but apparently has been cleared to workout, dunk, whatever else.  he's been doing pushups and stuff.  But he's not going to participate with the summer league team.  He's in Vegas, but won't be playing.

Apparently, Anthony Davis will be replacing Blake Griffin for team USA this summer. So we shouldn't expect him to be playing against Portland when they face the Hornets on July 15th. Too bad, it would've been nice to see the top talent in the draft playing against our two lottery picks.

Does anyone else have a problem with this? I mean I'm happy as hell that Griffin won't get any more overrated publicity, but Anthony Davis?

That's basically saying that of ALLLLLL the other bigs in the NBA, among power forwards and centers, who could replace Griffin's spot... the best fit is a draft pick (#1 or otherwise) that has absolutely ZERO NBA-level experience?

The more I think about this, the more it seems like an absolute joke and disgrace to the Olympic team.

Players should not be able to earn an Olympic roster spot just because they're the next hot thing that the media likes. Of all the honors you can earn in basketball, being on the Olympic roster should be reserved for the truly highest quality players.

I have a feeling it's Stern's fault. Can't wait for the NBA to be rid of his cancerous influence. It can't come soon enough.

(Also, I'm still excited to see OUR team in summer league)

i agree i think the media in the last few years ever since lebron came into the league really has been over the top and it seems like players are being babied based on who the medias latest love craze is.

i know aldridge isnt on the team because of injury, as much as i dont like him kevin love should have had a nod over davis unless he's on the team already im not really sure. just makes the draft lottery conspiracy that much more feasible too.

blake going down was karma at it's finest i wouldnt want a talentless hack cheater representing our country anyway.

From time to time I show my age on how old I am when I say I saw Jery Sloan play basketball and whatnot. Now is my chance to do the opposite. Up until they changed the rules for basketball and a few other olympic sports Anthony Davis would have been the headline anywayst was only our professional teams that were not allowed to play in the olympics somehow every other country's professional players got to play. I dont know or remember what sparked the change of rules except maybe our olympic commitee grew a set and told the rest of the world that they were cheating. That created the Dream Team which I think they decided to put the #1 draft pick of that year on the team.Up until that point it was all college and maybe a few who never got drafted or some one went to play in the olympics before they played in the NBA I know there were one or 2 who did this. My opinion is they should have at least one player from college on the team.

I hear ya on showing your age... I remember as a kid getting standing room tickets and sneaking down to second row when we were down to Sloan, Van Leer, Gilmore, Love and company and L train went on a tear and we made an incredible comeback.... Sloan was mean as a dog back in the 70s ahaha

i hope we get either Shaw or Malone....

But most of allllll I can't wait to see our new quarterback... Portland point guards have not been our strongest... TP, Hollins, Strickland, maybe Miller other than that pretty average... Funny how the teams we had a good point guard we went to the Finals.

Soooo stoked to watch Lillard run the show!!!!

This thread is about the summer league, and I'd like to talk more about that in this thread, so if anyone's been watching and has anything to say, I'd like to hear your thoughts.  I haven't missed a single game.  I'm behind by a couple, but it's paused in the other room.  I wish I were in Vegas b/c this is the time to be there.  Man, everyone who's anyone in basketball is crammed into one stadium that seats maybe 5,000... I'm not sure.  I need to go there next year.

About Anthony Davis, the truth is, he has been working out with all the Olympians and Olympic hopefuls.  It's not bush that he made the team.  Bosh, Howard, and LA are all hurt and the only real center on the team right now is Tyson Chandler.  The team needs a guy like Davis who can block and they really have nobody else worthy.  Plus Davis is more dimensional than Rudy Gay and the other guys who are working out that didn't make the squad.  I don't know if Bynum is hurt or wasn't invited.

The reason for the change in the rules I think was just because USA lost.  Up until 1990, NBA professionals were not allowed to participate in the olympics, but after the amateurs lost in Munich, then again in Seoul, I think Jordan and company just pushed to get nba pro's to play, probably because european pro's were allowed to play.  I think russian hockey teams had always used pro's, but I'm not positive.  I thought the pro team is who the 1980 hockey guys beat in the semi's.   Those were the days, when real dream teams won.  That 1992 usa men's team was the first time NBA professionals had been used and that also pretty much marked the trend of international players really wanting to come play in the NBA.  That dream team won by an average margin of about 45 ppg and it was just a joke.  Everyone else was playing for 2nd and honestly, I wish there were a worldwide rule that only amateurs can participate in the olympics.  It used to be, at least for america that once you'd accepted money or endorsements of any kind, you've then relinquished your amateur status and could no longer participate in the olympics... and to me that's what made the olympics great.... and chance to see the up and coming athletes of tomorrow.  That's where Evander Holyfield and many other greats were recognized.  Now there's far less people growing up with olympic dreams

    anyway.

anyone seen any summer league games?  There's been some ho-hum games, lakers looked pitiful in the first game of theirs I saw.  Few other games have not have anyone do anything all that impressive.  Probably 80% of these guys if not more are going to end up on European teams, but there have been some impressive performances and some pretty good play by some guys.

I saw Drummond a few times and he's just as he was in college. And the announcers are still saying the same BS, questioning his motor.  It's not his motor and I wish people would realize that.  His problem is that he's 18, he doesn't have a high basketball IQ, he didn't get a lot of coaching from calhoun in college b/c of his health, and Drumond just stands around lost too much, like he's unsure what to do.  He is passive.  I don't call that lack of motor b/c he doesn't look to be resting or lazy, he is just unsure of himself.  He still don't know how to box out.  I saw Andrew Nicholson just basically push him our of the way for a rebound and then Drummond fouled him after the offensive board.  dumb crap like that.  But he's also swatted some shots out of the ballpark and he's put down a few good shots offensively.  When he's got his head on his shoulders and asserts himself, he can be a very good player.

2 sharpshooters have been John Jenkins and Klay Thompson.

John Jenkins as you know was drafted this year, he's from Vandy and he may have been the best pure shooter in the draft.  I think percentage wise, he was the best 3 point shooter.   I really think Portland shoulda tried to get him b/c fans would love him.  Twice he had the ball passed to him with no time on the shot clock and he drained bombs.  Best thing about him is not just his shooting, but how much he's like Reggie Miller.  Jenkins moves great without the ball.  Makes him a nightmare to guard and he's just going to keep getting better.

I think the best shooter in the summer games so far and maybe in the NBA is Klay Thompson.  I think this is only his 2nd year in the NBA.  He's the son of Mychal Thompson.  Klay is with the Warriors and watching him with rookies Harrison Barnes, Festus Ezeli, and Draymond Green has been outstanding.  This GS team is going to be good.  They may need some time to click, but Harrison and Klay have been virtually unstoppable.  In their first game, they both combined for 45 or so points.  Klay was 6 of 8 from 3 point land and in his 2nd game (which I have paused now) he started the game draining his 1st 4 3-pointers.  The crowd has been going nuts for him.  He missed his 5th try, and then he started drawing double teams, so he's gotten quiet from downtown, but he's still driven the lane a couple times, and he's involving his teammates more.  Fun stuff.

Marshon Brooks did alright as a rookie last year, but his percentages were worst than expected.  He is on the Nets summer league team to improve.  First few games he didn't do so well, but in the final game for the Nets he tied a summer league record with 34 points.  He's a bit of a ballhog at times, but he showed great ability not only to knock down outside shots, but drive the lane, dump it off or pull up.  He has a pretty good first step.

I wanna go watch some more, but I plan on doing a pretty thorough update of the Orlando summer league since that's over, and I can start a conversation about what I've seen in Vegas so far.

Portland, Spurs and other teams play their first game tomorrow.  I fear they may not be on tv unless you have comcraptic because there are 7 games tomorrow I do believe and they're taking place in 2 different arenas.  Iv'e been watching every game on NBA network and they've show every game.  It's been awesome.  I'll have to check tomorrow's tv schedule to know what's up for sure.  If portland isn't on tv, maybe tbtv will show them, I hope.  I don't wanna miss 'em.   but watching on my computer sucks... video feed is too choppy.

Not a great start Lillard shot now where to be found 1-5 team had too many TO with 7 led by 3 from Leonard. Luke's defense does not look like it has improved either. Better see more the next 3 quarters.

So we cut down on turnovers but our defense was terrible and our shooting was even worse. Lillard is now 2-10 Barton is 0-5 and Diebler missed all 3 of his attempts. Leonard can't score if he can't hold onto the ball 4 TO to 1 FGA. Babbitt plays excellent defense when he guy does not take any shots. At least Nolan's new jumper looks to be working 4-8 for 10 points. Not a pretty start.

Portland looks great when the shots are falling maybe it was just nerves early on? Still relying on jumpers too much down 16 to 29 in FTA. Can we pull it off in the fourth

After starting 2-10 Lillard makes 7-11 in the second half on his way to game high 25 points. Meyers Leonard with a double double but needs to cut back on turnovers. Good win though and nice comeback.

Tonight the rookies played very well for their first game..... Lillard's birthday 7-21 shooting but played well 25 points, 4 assists, 4 rebounds and Leonard 3-4 shooting, 8-10 FT's, 11 or 12 rebounds, 3 blocks and 7 fouls, some were cheap but he is learning and given time and the right mentor he won't commit the stupid fouls so much. I think considering it was their first pro game they looked very promising.

The first half did suck but I am referring to the second half comeback in my evaluation of the rookies. If Babbitt would learn to defend he might have a future in the league because the guy can shoot and rebound.

I like the attitude of D.L. I think we have a good pick in him. I was really impressed with his confidence going to the basket and how he played the pick and roll. I was a bit doubtful but I think he will be awesome playing with L.A. M.L was quite impressive in that he is fit and gets after the ball.Yeah pretty happy watching these hungry players. Go blazers!

Lillard would have had around 10 dimes if Leonard could have held onto the ball and Barton or Diebler could have made a shot. I thought his passing was solid and I loved his confidence shooting the ball. I start 2-10 and there is no way I keep jacking up shots.

25,4,4, thats Brandonesque. And you're right cmeese, easy 9 to 10 dimes were they to have been converted. Granted they played without Davis, and we without Claver and Freeland. Still, its always good to hear sneakers squeaking on the hardwood.

yeah, those who doubted babbitt being able to shoot, it was nice to see him step up.  Nolan looked great before he got hurt too.   And i think nolan and babbitt understand their importance to the team right now.  Babbitt could start pending what happens with batum, and nolan is the #2 PG right now and in the first half he was more impressive than lillard.   was funny chatting with peeps b/c they were so rude, totally trashing the blazers in the first half.  typical.  they love 'em when they win, and think olshey made all the wrong moves when we're losing.  kaleb was getting disrespected big time "he's not the answer for portland" and blah blah blah.  Fans really are short-sighted and shallow... kinda pisses me off sometimes.  People just need to be patient.  I think most of us rated the draft and A or B and we understand there'll be highs and lows.  Those of you who hadn't seen Meyers play and only watched videos and rated him a B because everyone else did, I hope you saw his athleticism and potential in game 1.  I do foresee him as an all-star one day and I expected when he was drafted 11th that he would be our starting center to start the year, but that was pre-hibbert talk.  Once we didn't get hibbert and after yesterday, i think olshey's going to be just focusing on backup centers, like getting prz signed.  i don't know what's up with gadzuric, but with thomas gone, maybe he'll stay with the team?

anyway, lookin forward to game 2 tomorrow.  Machado hasn't been that great, but you'll be able to see him, Lamb, Terrence jones, royce white.  chandler parsons is hurt after a good first game, but also keep your eyes on Motiejunas #20 ... he's a 7 footer who can run up and down the court pretty fast.  he got after it in game 1... had 25 points, 9 boards, hit 3 3 pointers that I saw... don't think he missed any.  game 2 he sorta disappeared.  would like to see if he matches up with leonard... leonard's stronger, but 'junas will stretch the court on him....so meyers may have to be a bit of a perimeter defender... :)

    exciting stuff.

I got to see the first half of the first game I might have stayed up had the score  been a little closer. So for the first game I can see that Wes needs to knock some rust off. Luke needs to learn more on defense but 10 rebounds lets hear some kudo's for that. At least we know he has more than a pulse. On to our Rooks. I was actually pretty impressed with Meyers Leonard in the first half he had the first basket of the game with a dish from Lillard. Not sure what I expected from him everyone said he was a project but between nerves and the pace I think he did fairly well. Alot of 'Clangers' going on for Lillard and everyone else in the first half which I attest to again nerves and rust you could probably acredit Lillard to at least 4 more assists but for missed shots. If he does nothing but get better in the following games I think our draft selection will be pretty decent. I will wait for game 2 to see about Will Barton. I also think that Leonard did a better job than Zellar did,Meyers just needs to get a better grip on that dam ball. I did like Olshey's little interview with the announcers. He said that he was going to deal with Batum on Wednesday and I do not think it will be a minute before 71:50 into it.Got to like that.

Unlike you, I didn't see any of the first half yet.  I streamed the 2nd half and have the whole reply on my dvr, so I may be able to see it all 2nite after I watch the raptors/heat.  dunno yet.

About Meyers, he considers himself to be a project, but anyone who saw him at Illinois knows how far he's come since his freshman season. Meyers likes to model himself after current pro's.  He talks about improving his footwork, post moves, and his court awareness.  He's pretty quick, great hops, high bball IQ. Honestly, I don't think Meyers is that much of a project, but as I said, he considers himself to be a project.  I don't know how much time he spends studying film, but he's a gym rat.  He has less than 6% body fat and he even joked on twitter the other day that he's in the gym with john cena and it'll take awhile till his physique gets to be as big as his.  kinda funny.

But that's the beauty of Meyers, he's going to continue to improve and get bigger.  I grade his the draft pick of Meyers an A, if he works harder than Drummond, he'll always be better than him because he is more polished now.  I grade his future an A because he'll improve and I fully expect he'll be an all-star.  I don't know who to compare him to as far as prior centers in the NBA goes because I can't think of many 7 footers who emphatically dunk like him.  I mean, fast guys who will get an alley oop on the run and swing from the rim after jamming it down.  I don't know how good Rik Smits' hops were, but I'm pretty sure Meyers is more athletic than him.  I guess i'd like to see Meyers develop that automatic shot that ewing had and getting him in here as our coach would be good for that reason... to work with him, but I don't want ewing as a head coach, I just want him as an assistant or centers coach or something.

I have a lot of faith in Barton.  Will the Thrill.  His game is inside the 3 point line, and he's not that thick, so mixing it up with others in the paint is not ideal, but he's crafty and that's just sorta his style.  His shooting percentage was great in college, so he'll come around, but people shouldn't expect him to get any bigger because he just has a skinny frame.

anyway.  game 2 tomorrow.  i'm sure it wont be on directv, but the replay of game 1 was, so i'll record the replay of game 2.

I really liked Meyers Leonard in the first summer league game. Everybody seemed a little nervous,  but Leonard had a pretty good game whne you look at it. He finished the game with 14 pts ,11 rebounds, 3 blocks, and his FG% was 75% as he went 3/4, he hit 8/10 free throws for free-throw% of 80%. And like Boomtown said Leonard has like 6% body fat, very high basketball IQ, fast speed for 7 footer," versatile, explosive endurance " as Meyers Leonard said himself after the game. This kid is for real. He is only 20 years old, and he is 7'1" 240lbs. Once he starts working with NBA trainers and going to the NBA quality training facilities , he could easily put more muscle weight on with that Athletic frame.
His sophomore year of college, this last year, he averaged 13.6 pts a game and 8.2 rebounds a game with 60 blocks over 30 starts with the Illinois Illini. He was named Big-10 player of the week on Dec 26, 2011 after averaging 16.5 pts and 14.5 rebounds a game over 2 games for the Illini. Leonard could become a double-double every night ,All-star caliber Center as far as I can see. I can wait to see him on Tuesday on the summer league replay.

Game one Waiters certainly not looking like a great pick at number 4. Things can change but not a great debut against a weak Charlotte team.

Only weak thing about Charlotte's summer league team is that MKG may not play anymore, at least he didn't play vs Cleveland, but they have Jeffrey Taylor, Biyombo, Brown of Colorado, Ralph Sampson III, and Kemba Walker who's fast as snot and nifty with the ball.

They're not that weak of a team in my opinion and in the game I saw with MKG, they showed some really strong defense.  You said good things about Jeffrey Taylor before and he's been looking great as a perimeter defender, shot selection, he's just a heady Vandy guy... I expect nothing less.  I don't expect him to be a superstar, but I do think he'll be starting and maybe from day 1, not sure the rest of Charlotte's roster, but aren't they they losers who only had 7 wins last year?

MKG could be 1st team all-defense as a rookie, damn.  Loved him in college and I know it's only summer league, but he's already taking on guys bigger than him.  He was matched up on Thomas Robinson and really made him look like crap in my opinion.  TRob scored, but he struggled mightily, in both games I've seen.  He's tall and muscular, but he's does not appear to be that strong against the bigger competition.  Webber was saying when you're a 6-6 to 6-8 tweener, blah blah blah.  He's no tweener, at least I didn't think so, I thought he was a rock solid 6-9, but i'm not that impressed with him thus far.

As far as Waiters goes, I have to ask, did you watch him play or just look at the stats?  Cuz I've watched him closely in 2 games and I'm not overly impressed, but not displeased.  You have to understand Kyrie's out, and the hope was to have them playing together, so now Waiters is doing all the ball handling and doing a great job at that.  He's running the offense.  He's passing well, getting some boards, I've only seen 1 turnover so far in 2 games, but I'm not looking at stats to say for sure, but point is he's protecting the ball well, no dumb passes.  He's also got a nice scoop move I've seen a couple times... one time he scooped and dished, other time he converted a layup.  gets some OOOh's from the crowd.  I also think the team in game 1 advised him to shoot a lot of 3's so they could check out his range b/c I think his first 4 or 5 shots were all 3 balls and I think he only made 1.  He's not shy to take that shot, but to me it's not really his fortay.  Getting to the hoop is his game and where he's going to be most effective.  I've see him draw in the defense and dish to Zeller a few times.  That combo seems to be working good.

Aside from shooting too many 3's, I think he's shown good court awareness, and good shot selection.

I've seen a couple boneheaded plays... he called a time out late when they didn't have one (ala chris webber @michigan), and he barreled down the lane and plowed into a set defender.  That aside, I don't really have any complaints.  As far as I can tell, he's doing what the team's asking of him and he's sort of been thrust into a role I and others and probably he didn't expect due to Kyrie being out... and I think he's doing well.

I watched his game against Charlotte and he looked unsure of him self most of the game. I am sure he would have looked better with Kyrie but right now I am not impressed especially as good as Barnes has looked.

Boomtown my wife said they are replaying the game at 10 tonight on Directv.  I hussled home to watch only to find it wasn't on.  I think Leonard looks pretty filled out physically already.  A big that can shoot free throws is like finding a blond that can do calculus.  I liked both rookies games and I can see them both starting.  Will Barton did a great job of penetrating and dishing to others.  He has Travis Outlaw type frame and really gets out and runs.  Babbit is what he is and works hard and I like that in any player.  He is a shooter and if they build his confidence he will deliver.

Very poor rebounding tonight. With Leonard going for blocks, Babbit as PF in too undersized. Our Summer League squad doesn't have good bigs apart from Meyers and against Houston having good depth with D-Mo, White, Jones, and the rest of guys agressively going to the board  - we've been simply outplayed in rebounding

That was a disgrace 23 offensive rebounds allowed. Hopefully this puts to bed any idea that Luke is a 4. I saw Luke getting torn up by Terrence Jones a mile away but did not expect him to give up that many offensive boards. Lillard and Smith continued to look good offensively though.

...and I want to see more touches in offense by Leonard. They need to improve feeding him at low post. He should make about 12 shot attempts a game in summer league
