I see everyone including him in their rotations, trades, and plans for the future. Luke Babbit, from what I've seen, is a third string player at best. Maybe a poor man's Kyle Korver on his very best day. If this team is going to compete Luke Babbit needs to only see the floor in garbage time.

Not true, Babbit can flat out shoot, if we have LA and Hib  in the paint, Bab's three will be deadly. Give him some floor time to work on that game and I think his worth will be seen.

Babbitt shot 41% last year and was lousy on defense not exactly inspiring numbers.

Babbitt, El Scrub Gigante. Should have left with Armon. Include him in any trade packages as we move forward please.

Babbit wont be in any trades either. Unless he is just for salary. Maybe we could send Babbit and a first rounder for Marshon Brooks and get in on that Howard trade. At the same time we could just send the first round pick.

Yeah he can shoot, but what else does he bring to the table ? There isnt a sf in the game he can defend.Maybe, maybe, he can defend the likes of a Grant Hill or another fossil thats still in the league. I'll take Alonzo Gee in a heartbeat over Babbitt.

Yeah lets get rid of him. He only played how many minutes and he was 3 3 pointers away from having the best 3pt shot percentage in the league. That is a guy that I want playing against me. First 2 years if he took a shot Nate would yank him from the game whether he made it or not so he averaged about 1 minute a game every 5 games or so. Becauseof the fiasco last season he got more minutes and actually started to play some defense and grab some rebounds at the last couple of games. By no means do I think he will ever be a defensive standout but neither is Durant and Durant was as bad on defense as Babbit is now. Yeah Yeah Yeah I know Babbit is no Durant BUT his 3 point % is better than just about everyone elses fg% on the team from last year. If anyone needs a break this season it is him that kid was afraid of his own shadow on the court. I do not know what Nate did to him or told him but he is not the same cocky kid that came out of college. I just think it will be a big mistake if we trade him he has got a sweet shot and is better at long range than short and he can only get better. He is a spot up shooter more than likely a situational player but a guy that can come in for 15 mins a game and get you a quick 12 to 18 pooints yeah that is a guy that I want playing against me and we definately have no use for him

I think it's pretty unfair for all of you to judge Babbitt, I mean, you're judging a guy based on what he's done in less than a season full of games.  You guys who say he can't shoot must not watch him play and know nothing about him and his reputation coming out of college.

Right now if he'd stayed in school, he'd be a graduating senior, so he's still just a kid and he's barely been given a shot to show what he can do.

I'll give a shout out to kenny in this thread because I think he's the only guy who said Babbitt can shoot and he can.

Aside from his 22 ppg in his sophomore year, I crunched some numbers and in 21 of 24 games in which he averaged 10+ minutes per game, Babbitt averaged 49% from 3 pointland

When Luke came into the league, he was a 16th overall pick and he was worth the price of Martell Webster to the Blazers.

I remember he got quite a few minutes after Nate was fired and I had mixed emotions.  Sometimes he shot really well and he is good from long range.  As his minutes increased, he seemed to do pretty well, but then he started a few games really late in the year and he was throwing bricks.  I'm not going to judge him and his future on a few games, but here you go....

In 24 games he had 10 or more minutes played.
He had a season high 7 rebounds when he played 41 minutes in 3rd to last game of the season.
He had 6 rebounds twice (both times in only 10 and 12 minutes played).

In those 24 games with 10+ minutes, he averaged 3.5 rebounds
He does not pass much; he's mostly going to catch and shoot

He shot just over 40% from the floor in those same 24 games.
He shot better from downtown (nearly 43%)

But in the games in which he got the most minutes, he shot the worst from downtown, including 1 of 8 in the last game of the season.

If you throw out his 3 worst 3-point shooting games (5 of 21), he actually shot 49% from 3 pointland, so for 21 of 24 games with 10+ minutes, he is nearly 50% from downtown.

He did get 5 steals in the last 4 games, so maybe you could say his defense improved a bit, but that's hardly definitive.  You just can't really count on this guy for blocks or steals, but he does have some size (6-9) and about 225.

He is not going to attack, which is to say
he's not going to the free throw line much at all... and I don't expect that to change, but he's got good size and I'd like to see him play more physically.

    Bottom line is....

Babbitt has not yet played a full season's worth of games, so the verdict is definitely still out.  To me he seems like a good option coming in off the bench, but he did shoot well with a high average in college and shooting touch is one of the hardest skills to acquire, so I dunno, maybe the ceiling is higher than I imagine.  But to me he seems like a lifetime backup and if he ever gets a shot to start on a regular basis, I'd have to believe it's out of desperation.  Even this year, if Batum leaves, Babbitt might start because he's got some experience, but I'd expect Will The Thrill to supplant him as the starter at some point... mainly because Will's more exciting, and brings more to the table, but Babbitt has more size and he can matchup defensively better... but he has to use his frame to his advantage or he lowers his value to the team.

Still, the possibility of a near 50% shooter from downtown coming in off the bench is a nice complement.

I don't have a crystal ball, and I know many fans just look at what a guy has done for them lately and do not really forecast the future.  Babbitt is still learning for sure and he will improve.  But understand he's also already been sent to the D league twice in his career, and I don't like that Portland got rid of Webster for this guy, but he was more hyped in college and the draft than he is now... I get the feeling many of you probably don't know much about him and saw him a couple times last year when the team was in limbo and thought, ho hum.  maybe you looked up his numbers and you don't have any foresight, that's understandable.  I personally like to look at the positives and I see a lot of room for Babbitt to grow.

And if Batum's not coming back, I think it'd be nice to have someone familiar with the offense.  Of course if we get a new coach, that don't friggen matter, so whatever.  Babbitt's serviceable with room to improve and I'm not going to bash him like all of you because I know he's a good shooter, much better than the discredit you all serve him.

    Boomtown is correct.

The problem with Babbitt is who can he guard in the NBA. Right now it is not many people but in time this could change. He is big enough to guard the 4 position. This is where he should focus his off-season work out's. He will never be quick enough to consistently stop NBA 3 players. He can get stronger and learn the inside position game and be a serviceable 4. In a hybird offense where he plays outside on O and inside on D he can be a great spot up shooter and force teams to guard him with a 4 out there.

This is a nice weapon to have on your bench.

Please don't get rid of Babbitt. I think Babbitt has tons of upside!!!  He has a really good shooting motion and is phenomenal from 3 point range. I don't know what you guys watched last year, but as soon as he got significant minutes off the bench, he was productive. I have always said that Mcmillan was a good coach, but hasn't been able to build are young talent. Now that he is gone, look for Babbitt to flourish offensively. Yeah I agree his defense is not that great, but off the bench he can score lots points and fast. He can work on his defense as well as he has a good frame for it and is still only  23.  In 2011-2012 season he played in 40 games and shot 43% from 3, and 46.7% from 3 when coming off the bench for the season. He had some pretty good games last season in my opinion with the ridiculously low amount of minutes he has gotten. In a game against the Boston Celtics last season he had 6 rebounds and was 3-7 overall shooting and 2-2 from 3 for 10 pts and 6 rebounds in 12 minutes of playing time. Against the Hornets he went 5-8 overall and 4-6 from 3 point range with 3 rebounds and 16 pts  in 17 minutes. Also he was 85% from free throw for the season. If he just learns how to use his body more and gets some more contact to get to the line when he isn't shooting well, he could be a beast. All I can see Babbitt  doing is going up from here. I think he could develop  into a true starting SF at some point, but at least for now be a formidable shooter off the bench.

He maybe big enough to guard the four but he got beat like a red headed step child when he tried. As a 3 he gave up around 51% EFG% while in almost equal time he allowed 66% EFG% while playing the four.

His 1.46 PPP allowed at the 4 is not acceptable if his man took 20 shots Luke would be giving up almost 30 a night.

He has a lot to learn and he needs to muscle up a bit but i still see Luke having more potential as a 4 than a 3. He needs to body up more and foul all the time,.. hard. He has six fouls to give and in the NBA the more years you play the more you get away with fouling inside.

The problem is Luke is not a great rebounder so designating him to play the four hurts us on the glass and defensively.

yeah pball, you mention nate not developing talent.  Tha'ts one thing I liked about Kaleb, he let everyone play.  Craig Smith, Thabeet, Nolan, Babbitt, and others got opportunities to finally play some minutes and it was nice to see.  Nate though I think was coaching the team to make the playoffs, and Kaleb coached a team he knew wasn't going to make it, so he was mostly scouting the team and it was probably at Paul Allen's orders... let's see what they can do.

Story I read is that Portland's actually going to be on the prowl for a new coach at the summer league in Vegas.  Looking forward to the next couple weeks.

not sure about sloan, someone else had a thread entitled with his name and I didn't get around to reading it yet.  He's an experienced coach, all i know of him though is that he always had malone, stockton and hornacek, and i don't think they ever got the proper missing pieces to fill in the puzzle and i don't think they ever won a title.  but yeah, experience he has.  just not sure if he's interested in coaching again or what.

I've been saying I wish portland would take a look at a coach in college that runs an offense that would benefit our roster.  And I personally love Calipari's motion offense at kentucky... he used it at memphis too... players love it and if you take a look at the players calipari's coached, well, they're typically the best in college basketball.. they love his offense and he grooms them for the nba.

But I don't expect calipari to leave kentucky.  What could happen is luring strickland off his bench to come be an assistant with the blazers... not sure rod's ready to be a head coach, but his experience in the nba and his experience by calipari's side for many years would be very beneficial... he could teach the motion offense and that would be great for guys like batum and matthews.

I think sloan could be good too b/c utah was great with the pick and roll and that's up our alley.  lillard is good with the pick and roll b/c he's an awesome slasher.  so sloan might be a good idea.
