Team President Larry Miller Steps Down

Larry Miller has resigned as President of the Portland Trail Blazers to take a job with a Portland-area company, the team announced on Saturday.

"I greatly enjoyed my time with the Portland Trail Blazers," said Larry Miller. "It was an incredible experience and I'll be forever grateful to Paul Allen for giving me the opportunity and honor to lead what I believe to be one of the best teams in all of sports."

Under Miller's leadership, the Trail Blazers recorded three consecutive trips to the postseason from 2009-11 for the first time since 2001-03. The Trail Blazers won 54 games and shared the Northwest Division crown in 2008-09, the team's first division title since 1998-99.

"The timing is right," said Miller. "We have an excellent general manager in place in Neil Olshey, so I feel the team is on solid ground and headed in the right direction. Off the court, business is great. The Rose Garden is packed every night and the passion of Trail Blazers fans has never been better."

"It is sad to see Larry leaving the Blazers and I want to thank him for his leadership and contributions to the franchise," said Owner Paul Allen . "Larry helped manage a period of significant growth and I wish him all the best as he takes on this opportunity."

Larry's "connections" didn't really land us any big, free agents that worked out.  I can't say I know exactly what we can attribute to Larry.  Maybe he felt obsolete with Olshey as GM.  Maybe they didn't see eye-to-eye.  Olshey is going to get all the credit or all the blame in any case, moving forward.  My money is on the former.

I find it interesting that we will start immediately to fine another president and we still do not have a coach.  I think Larry wanted to make the decision as to draft and coach and Paul was not having it so Larry goes and I think losing a control person like Larry will not be bad for the blazers.

You guys sure know how to overread into things...

Why does there have to be drama? There have never been any reported issues between Miller and Allen before, you think one disagreement would cause him to up and leave? Maybe it does have to do with the fact that Olshey seems to know what he's doing so Larry felt less needed, but to assume that it's because of some harsh disagreement over the franchise direction seems like you're assuming a heck of a lot (Ricky).

If someone can show me any coverage about this OTHER than simply reposting the words from the link on Blazers' homepage, then I'd love to see it :) but after all the overhype and rumors with the draft and now free agents, I really don't see the point in jumping to conclusions with no evidence to support it whatsoever. Just say goodbye to Larry, let him go, and focus on the team, not creating drama.

BlazerManiac, you called the thread "Great Day in Portland" due to Miller leaving, but then just copy and pasted a News post... I don't have any real familiarity with what we can or can't credit Miller for, can you tell me what makes it Great? Like I said above, just trying to gather real information.

I'm with you Blazer247, I was puzzled at the thread title, and I don't see why there has to be drama connected to this resignation. Not EVERYONE leaves a job because of bad-blood or interpersonal drama, when you're into business operations like Miller, you leave to pursue new projects rather than steal money from the register and bail one Friday afternoon.

If you want drama or stress to worry about, how about the fact that we have yet another hole in this already swiss-cheese-like team. No coach, no president, half a roster.... I can't say it's a great day in Portland when it means adding yet another personnel search. What if this interferes with the coach search or free agency? Will you be celebrating then?

We need a true Basketball Man in this Position, a Pat Riley, Phil Jackson, Danny Ainge, or even a Jerry Sloan.

Larry Miller was not a Basketball Man, he was a bean counter and a yes Man to Paul Allen.

In five years what has he done? What major talent has he brought in here? Chad Buchanan did more leading the team then Larry Miller ever did. Larry Miller was more concerned about following his processes; for example taking over a year to get a GM.

    Need I say more?

Yes you need say more.... If nobody better comes in, this is a wash. Miller didn't do anything. Big whoop. An empty position won't do anything either. This is another step backward in my eyes. It means more searching for staff, more distractions for everyone running the show in Portland taking away from BASKETBALL. Has everyone forgotten that the Trailblazers are a basketball team, not a hiring committee?

Couldn't we have included Larry in a sign and trade deal? We could use a veteran guard.

The alternatives you mentioned to bring in to replace Miller look more like a coaching list or GM list than a President of Operations list. And then you compared Miller's job to what Buchanan did, who was also a GM, not a President of Operations... so, yeah, still not convinced why you're hating. I agree with you that we want a Basketball Man, but I want him as our Coach and our GM, and I want our President of the business side of the franchise to be exactly that: a BUSINESS man before a basketball man. Larry Miller was an undeniably successful businessman. On top of that, he was very eco-friendly, which is big in Portland. Remember that article you linked? It actually mentioned things that he did well, like getting the Rose Garden to be the first Gold-certified NBA venue when it comes to sustainability. That is the type of task for a businessman, not a basketball man.

Yes. Yes, you do need to say more. You haven't given any credible evidence as to why Larry Miller was bad at his job. But thanks for at least taking down part of the Post's title :)

Really, there's no need to keep arguing about whether or not it's good that Larry Miller is gone. Like Pickett said, another vacancy in our office is NOT a good thing at all, but whether or not we can improve with our next hire is yet to be seen (or proven).

How about we just say goodbye to Larry, thanks for the years of work in the business-side of the Blazers, and lets go back to TALKING ABOUT BASKETBALL.
