Jason Quick of The Oregonian reports on Twitter that Portland Trail Blazers GM Neil Olshey said that the team will not extend a qualifying offer to forward J.J. Hickson.

    --------------------------------

Blazers GM Neil Olshey says team will not issue qualifying offer to JJ Hickson but will be open to negotiating on July 1

    --------------------------------

The news isn't particularly surprising given that Blazers forward Nicolas Batum received his qualifying offer earlier in the week with no word on Hickson's until Thursday night's Draft, when Olshey still left things open (as documented by BlazerFanSince1970).

Hickson is now an unrestricted free agent.

Dont panic, this makes total sense. We are going to have roughly 10mil to spend in FA, as well as another 5mil exception. If we put out the offer to Hickson it would subtract from our cap space, basically allowing us two 5mil players. However, If we can sign a big time free agent with the 10+mil, then we can go over the cap to sign Batum and use our exception on Hickson.

I was mistaken. While Hickson is now unrestricted we still have Bird rights that allow us to resign him without using the exception. So we can sign a free agent(or two) with the free cap space. Then use the full 5mil exception, I believe if we are over the cap it goes down to 3mil. Then sign Hisckon and Batum over the cap. Open up that wallet Mr.Allen.

We had better sign Hickson to a 3-4 year deal at 5 million per. If for no other reason then to trade him next year.

I totally agree if they let Hickson go to another team then we are back to zero on the rebuild process...without JJ we will be losing probably the most energetic player on the court and a solid back up for LA...

Right now, the most realistic is Asik. If Houston pursue D12, sign and trade JJ and a couple second round picks, maybe Joel Freeland or somebody for Asik.

Nah, Washington would just sign him themselves, save them a pick. Also, no way JJ is worth a lottery pick. Oladipo would be great, for pretty much any team in the NBA. I don''t think it''s possible to get him though. Should focus on getting a defe...

Jermaine O''Neal, Drazen, Z-Bo, Sheed (I know he was already a star but still). Also Drazen was buried under Drexler and Porter.

What happens if we don''t win? Dwight will start his nonsense, we would be out a lot of money, and with no real talent to show for it. San Antonio and Memphis is proof that you don''t need superstars to win.

Special K, aren''t you a cereal? And yes, Batum is expensive, but I think he''s worth it. Why would you take someone who isn''t is as good, just for less money. Then why don''t we take the worst possible player and pay him the least possible amoun...
