    • Portland failed to make the Playoffs despite paying out over 80 million in salary if you include Roy's amnesty deal that cannot continue simple as that.
    • This thread will provide the rankings for the Blazers as a team and then discuss how we can improve that via Free Agency.
    Here are the facts:
    • Poor defense- despite starting the year with a former DPOY in Camby and a former 1st team All-Defense player in Wallace we struggled to get stops.
    • Portland gave up .463 FG% to their opponents this was 5th worst in the league behind Sacramento, Charlotte, Cleveland and New Jersey. Some of this can be attributed to playing rookies late but the fact is Portland played terrible defense most of the year, which is why we traded Wallace and Camby to begin with.
    • While all decent W. Barton, D. Lillard and M. Leonard are not lauded for their defense.
    • Portland should consider guys like Kenyon Martin, O. Asik, A. Kirelenko, Grant Hill, and George Hill to help improve their defense.
    • Poor Perimeter Defense
    • We gave up 36.3% shooting from three point range last season that is tied with Miami for 5th worst in the league.
    • Portland's defensive rotations were especially poor. Double teaming the post was almost impossible for the team because it resulted in too many wide open threes. Pick and roll was also problematic as Portland defenders save for W. Matthews were often playing too far off their man to be able to fight over the top of picks. Failure to fight through picks resulted in wide open jumpers for the ball handler if the big man did not jump out of easy dribble and kick penetration if the play was switched.
    • Biggest need is athletic defenders and a defensive minded coach.
    • No Shot Blocking
    • Part of the reason the team struggled so much on defense was a lack of a defensive shot blocker in the paint.
    • This forced players like Batum and Felton to play off of their men to avoid dribble penetration, which hurt them along the perimeter and on pick and roll defense.
    • Block numbers is college usually drop in half in the NBA, which would suggest that Leonard is probably a block per game defender, unfortunately I do not think that is deterrent enough. However, if he was combined with someone like O. Asik and K. Martin then the Blazers would have a much better post presence on defense.
    • Non-Efficient shooting
    • Portland shot 44.3% from the field good enough for 20th in the NBA
    • A lot of this has been addressed with the leaving of J. Crawford 38.4%, and R. Felton 40.7%.
    • However, L. Babbitt 41.0%, W. Matthews 41.2%, N. Smith 37.2% should all expect to see significant minutes next season and their numbers must improve.
    • Portland needs someone like Steve Nash to help facilitate open shots while D. Lillard gets acclimated to the NBA. Additionally, Nash shot over 53% from the field last season, so pairing him with L. Aldridge would certainly improve our numbers.
    • Poor Rebounding
    • Portland with 40.67 rebounds per game was 6th worst in the NBA last year. This is despite having Camby the NBA leader in rebounding rate for over half the season.
    • Leonard should help here but he was not a prolific rebounder in college so Portland will need help for elsewhere.
    • Batum needs to improve his rebounding as his rebounding rate was ranked in the 30's for the SF position.
    • We will also need help from the guard positions and off of the bench.
    • Signing E. Ilyasova would help as he proved to be an excellent rebounder last season, as would bringing O. Asik whose 20.1 rebound rate was in the top 10 of all NBA players. Adding them and getting some rebounding out D. Lillard 5.0 in college and W. Barton 8.0 in college Portland would certainly improve in this aspect.
There are obviously more issues, so feel free to make additions but I felt like this was a good place to start discussing what we can do this off-season.

I tend to look at who gets a lot of Offensive Rebounds because those are the guys that are really putting in the effort on both sides of the court and that exemplary play will be good for Leonard. Anderson Varejao averaged 4.4 ORPG of his 11.5 RPG which is quite impressive. Maybe a combination of Mathews/Claver/Future 2nd rounder for him?

Not sure Cleveland was reportedly asking a lot and with Waiters taken at 4 not sure they are interested in Matthews. I also believe they would be inclined to ask for Joel Freeland in any deal for Varejo

Hibbert would help here but a max deal is outrageous.

Do we also pass on Batum now?

I say pass on Batum, yes. With the contract Minnesota just offered. That's just too much. He's never gonna be an aggressive player and of all the positions, SF and SG are easiest to replace.

Do we make a run at Jeff Green to replace him now cause Barton, Babbitt and S. Williams are the kind of players the Charlottes of the world start at SF. If not Green who else is out there?

I would suggest going after AK-47

I said AK yesterday.Although i think he may be courted by the  Billionaire Russian.  Also, Iggy is available i think. Claver has some promise.

Iggy is only available via trade and Claver was terrible in Europe. AK-47 or Alonzo Gee seem like the best options to replace Batum in FA.

Alonzo Gee!!! But he is highly coveted by Cleveland from what I have read. They already made a generous offer to keep him.

If we do not resign Batum then Ak-47 and Rashard Lewis seem like the best available players

I would rather have AK-47 on the Blazers than Rashard Lewis. If we pass on Batum we go after either AK-47 or Jeff Green.

Hibbert helps with the blocks and rebounds but if we lose JJ then we still have big time rebounding issues. He will also help our overall defense but if we lose Batum then that will need to be addressed as well.

I like Hibbert but Portland is not doing a good job addressing their team needs at this point.

No one player is going to fill all our needs. Portland has a way to go. For right now I think their main priority is to bring in Hibbert, whether or not we get him will dictate what other positions and players we go after.

That is the problem though we seem to be sitting back and letting numerous other pieces come off the market.

Yeah, there won't be much left by the 14th, however, these are only verbal agreements, anyone can still come in and offer more money.

I guess it's all or nothing at this point for Portland.
