What does everyone consider when they try to decide who is a good defender.
I like to look at PPP against provide by Synergy Sports.
    Efg% allowed 82games.com
    Opponent TO% Hollinger ESPN insider
    Opponent PER 82games.com
    TRB% Basketball-reference and others

Overall I think these stats offer the best look at the defensive contributions of a player.
Mysynergysports.com allows users to access individual defensive numbers and ratings. You can see how well or poorly a player defends ISO, Post-Up, Spot-Up, P&R man or ball handler, Off screens and Hand Offs. These are probably the best measurements of individual defense but they are not perfect so it is important to look at other things.
82games.com allows its users to see an opponents PER or (per minuter statistical efficiency) and their Efg% among other stats both offensive and defensive. Using these in combination with PPP stats provide a stronger gauge of defensive efficiency.
Part of being a good defender is forcing turnovers so tracking opponent turnover percentages is useful but not effective on its own as a gauge for good defense.
The same goes for total rebound % this stat is more important for front court players than guards but nevertheless it remains useful in combination with the other measurements.

How do you measure defense who would you like to see the Blazers acquire to help on that end of the court?

Here is some of the numbers for Nicolas Batum who is considered a great defender by Blazer fans:
Spot-ups: 1.053 ppp (22nd percentile) Those numbers are terrible, Nico routinely sags off his defender to avoid being beaten off the dribble, which allows his man to take and hit a lot of late contested jumpers.
Defending pick-and-roll ball handler: .894 ppp (23rd percentile) This number is also quite low because he plays so far off of his man. By cheating into the lane to avoid penetration Batum forces himself to routinely go under screens allowing for open jumpers by the ball handlers.
Isolation: .709 ppp (69th percentile) Here is where playing off of his man helps him as he is quite effective of keeping the opposing player in front of him unfortunately this only represents about 12% of his defensive opportunities.
Off screen: .977 ppp (36th percentile) Another issue of playing too far off his man. Nico has a hard time catching up on the perimeter against screens but his long arms and good shot blocking do help this number from being worse.
Post-ups: 1.079 ppp (11th percentile) As a wing player this number is expected to be low; however, his thin frame certainly does not help him here as he weights about the same as potential Blazer pick Damian Lillard who is 6 inches shorter than Batum.
Batum's Rebounding rate is 8.8 which is only 32nd among qualified SF's part of this is the time he spent playing SG but his small frame and lack of intensity going for rebounds likely has an effect as well. If this number does not improve Portland will need to consider moving him to SG sooner rather than later.

Batum played 10% of the teams minutes at SG 5% of the teams minutes at PF and 54% of the teams minutes at SF. The league average for PER is 15 so you can see Batum held his man to around the league average at SF, below average at SG and really struggle playing PF. This year the NBA average for EFG% was .494 as you can see Batum struggle in this aspect allowing shooting percentages around 53% on the season thanks to a lot of open jumpers.

Batum has long arms and is a versatile defender but he cheats off of him man far too often which results in a lot of easy buckets for his man. Overall he has the ability to be an excellent defender but until he stops giving up so much space to the opponent and becomes more aggressive on the glass his main contribution will be on the offensive end.

so you want lillard or drummond?

I don't pay much attention to stats I guess.  I talk about them because others live for stats, but I guess I'm old fashioned... I judge them for what I see on the court.  Simple and true.  I have a routine when it comes to NCAA ball that most of you would think is nuts, but yeah, i won't put you to sleep, but I do a lot of homework and I'd wager I watch more NCAA games than all of you.  by far.  If any of you are as diehard as I am, I'll give you my phone number and we'll hook up next year.  I have directv and I record as many games as I can.  I just wish I could record more than 2 games at a time sometimes b/c I miss too much action, but typically my DVR fills up every year with NCAA games.  I'm thankful for days off when I can catchup.  i'm crazy, but I love ncaa hoops.  I really want a job as a scout or analyst.

I scout for Gonzaga part time I might be able to help you out if you are as dedicated as you say you are.

Aside from that what do you think Portland can do to improve their defense as a team cause last year it was terrible.

Hibbert is a nice defender but he is really is not worth a max deal.

versus post-ups: .717 ppp (78th percentile), as big defender dealing with the PNR ball-handler: .776 ppp (55th percentile), as big defender dealing with PNR roll man: .893 ppp (40th percentile)

16.6 rebound rate (20th among qualifying centers), 20.7 defensive rebound rate (33rd), 12.5 offensive rebound rate (12th), 10.7 assist rate (22nd), 12.7 turnover rate (21st)

His rebounding rate is not in the top 10 at his position and while he is a good offensive rebounder Portland needs a lot of help on the defensive glass. He also struggles with turnovers and staying with his man on pick and rolls.

Offensively he is below average except from 3-9 feet.

I love reading the metrics :) you do a great job analyzing the stats (but I'm not sure if you're always looking at them without bias). But I think when it comes to analyzing the value of players, there are other things to look at as well. It's just not as simple or as black-and-white as being able to look at metrics and come up with a clear, definitive resolution.

I will admit I am a pessimist but if I was just a giddy fan boy then who would I have to debate. Plus I will never be satisfied until we are winning NBA titles. But yes I totally agree with you.

Well it's not like you can only either be a fan-boy or a stat-slave (not saying you are either)... I think we'd all be happiest once we are back to winning titles, but I'm sure you're a fan of simply basketball too right? Not just championships?

On the thread "Our New Style" I've been trying to start a conversation about Blazer basketball, without having to involve all the ridiculous trade talk or deciphering stats. Feel free to give your opinion there, and don't worry it doesn't make you a giddy fan boy :P it's just a way to show that you're into the small part of the NBA that involves this thing "basketball"...

Of course I like basketball but it is the summer and so the drama takes over. Although this has been a very anti-climatic summer.

You should pay for the access to synergy since it is really hard to find their stats on the internet
