Batum gets qualifying offer

    Announced on twitter 12 minutes ago by Olshey that the Blazers have extended a qualifying offer to Nic Batum.  I'm sure it's already on this site somewhere, but I didn't see it...

    I think even if we don't want Nick at the price he is going to be offered, we should still match, then sign and trade as there will be many suitors for his services and he is a great asset.

    for sure.  I think the fact that they're making a move now is a very positive sign.  I'm glad they did this now instead of waiting till after the draft.  I don't know about the whole business side of the sport though; I think teams have to wait on making offers until after the draft, cuz I thought I heard free agency doesn't begin till july.  So I'm not sure why Portland did this qualifying offer now.  Is there a chance Batum will take the offer and sign?  or is this just the beginning of negotiations?  Since he's restricted, do we have to wait for other teams to make offers, or what?  

    The timing just seems weird, but maybe this is normal.  My hope is that it's portlands way of saying we want to keep Batum and maybe t his means they're not going to target a guy like Barnes with the 6th, nor will they try to move up to get him?   but that's making an assumption.

    boomtown, the qualifying offer is what makes him a restricted FA. Otherwise, he would've been unrestricted and Portland wouldn't have had the option to match any other offers he got. This is just standard procedure, and I don't think it has any implications about the draft-day strategy. Although I do agree that the timing is weird. Normally that would've been done earlier; maybe it's simply the first moment Olshey had time to talk to Nic's agent.
