Via Howard Beck of the New York Times-
The ruling means that both Lin and Steve Novak of the Knicks will be able to re-sign with the team without respect to the salary cap, for a starting salary around $5 million each. Just as critically, it means that the Knicks will not need to use their midlevel exception to sign either player, which will allow them to use that slot for another free agent.

The ruling — which applies to any player who was claimed off waivers — also affects Chauncey Billups of the Los Angeles Clippers and J. J. Hickson of the Portland Trail Blazers. Billups and Hickson will now have full Bird rights, allowing them to re-sign with their teams for any amount up to the maximum salary.

It looks like the Trail Blazers can now go over the salary cap to sign JJ Hickson. This really only gives the Blazers an advantage if they are able to lock up other free agents first, then sign Hickson later which would maximize our options this summer. Very similar situation as we're in currently with Nicolas Batum, barring Batum waits to sign an offer sheet.

Wow, i like this. It does mean portland can ignore PFs in this year's draft and focus on filling other needs.  I like hearing news like this before the draft :-D

However, it also means the local product Terrence Jones won't be playing in Portland this year :-\  lol  that's ok.  I like him, but Hickson already showed what he can do last year; he'll be a spark plug off the bench, and maybe at times we'll have Drummond, LA, and Hickson on the court simultaneously... solid front-court huh :-D

I agree fully boomtown. :) Hickson is proven and no need to waste picks on PF's now. Focus to get Lillard and Leonard. I want to see a center who can contribute RIGHT now in the NBA, not Drummond, a project and unknown risk. We already had too many risks in not Sam Bowie, Roy, and Oden. Time for the risks to stop!

I don't think Roy was a risk he just got hampered by injuries.

hickson is a green light for sign and trades (7 mil is to much for a backup to LA)

I've said it before and I'll say it again: It ALL depends on the money. Just because we can go over the cap to sign him doesn't mean we need or should overpay to get him.

I am not convinced LA will be void of injuries for the whole season.  I would not be opposed to getting a pf in the second round.  BPA maybe even Sullinger would be a good bet.  I would also think twice if T-Rob slides to #6.

Sullinger has a NBA medical red flag Ricky signing him because your worried about potential injuries would be foolish. However, it is good to know Hickson can kept if we want.

I'm glad we can sign Hickson. As far as Joel Freeland is concerned, the guy is not ready for the NBA. Look at his numbers, they are low even for European players. He should come over and see how he does in preseason.

If we keep JJ, then drafting a Lillard, Beal, Barnes, or some other slasher at #6 would make more sense.

I dont think Bucks take on Batums contract when they have an identical player with the same contract for Sanders. Sanders and Henson seem like the only untouchables on that team
