Here is what needs to happen for Portland to successfully retool this team in the summer. Note this will not be the only options but I believe it will be the best.

    Draft Night
Portland needs to complete a trade with either Charlotte or Sacramento to move up and draft Michael Kidd-Gilchrist. His defense, age, motor, and aggressiveness are incredible assets to add to a team and he would be an awesome fit. Portland also needs to make sure they get their point guard of the future in Damian Lillard. By trading up to get Michael Kidd-Gilchrist the team will need to make an additional move to be in position to take Lillard. With the rest of the picks we need to get depth.

Pick #5 Portland selects Michael Kidd-Gilchrist.
Pick #8 Portland selects Damian Lillard
Pick #28 Portland selects Draymond Green
Pick #40 Portland selects Scott Machado

    Trade assets
    Draft pick #6, #11, #40 and #41
    Future second round picks
    3 million in cash
    Wesley Matthews
    Shawne Williams
    Luke Babbitt
    Elliot Williams
    Kurt Thomas
    Jamal Crawford
    Rights to Victor Claver
    Rights to John Diebler
    Rights to Joel Freeland

    Trades
Portland gets lucky and Thomas Robinson is selected number 2 by Charlotte.
Portland trades pick #41, the rights to Victor Claver and pick #6 to Sacramento in exchange for pick #5.
Portland then trades pick #11, Luke Babbitt, and a 2013 2nd round pick to Toronto for pick #8.
Portland then trades 3 million dollars and the rights to John Diebler to Oklahoma City in exchange for pick #28
Portland trades Jamal Crawford to Indiana in exchange for a 2013 top 20 protected first round pick.
Portland trades Nolan Smith to Cleveland in exchange for a 2013 second round pick.
Portland trades Wesley Matthews, Kurt Thomas and Cleveland's 2013 second round pick to Chicago in exchange for Taj Gibson and Kyle Korver.

After numerous draft day trades Portland has major needs in free agency.
Veteran PG - with Lillard and Machado selected Portland has two PG's but this team needs a veteran to handle things for the next couple of seasons.
SG With Elliot Williams as the only SG currently on the roster Portland would be wise to seek a starter.
SF With MKG , Green and Korver the team is okay here but resigning Batum would make Korver expendable.
PF With Taj Gibson and Lamarcus Aldridge this team is stacked at PF.
C By drafting no centers Portland has big needs here.

    Free Agency
Portland makes an offer to restricted free agent C Omar Asik 5 years 30 million
Portland also makes an offer to restricted free agent George Hill 5 years 30 million
Indiana matches the offer to George Hill
    Chicago does not match
Portland signs PG Steve Nash 3 years 24 million with a Team Option for year 3
Portland signs Danny Green 4 years 18 million
Portland matches Golden States offer to SF Nicolas Batum 4 years 42 million
Portland signs Joel Freeland 4 years 17 million
Portland resigns Joel Pryzbilla 1 yr vet minimum.
    Portland waives Kyle Korver
Portland signs SF Grant Hill 2 years 6 million

    2013 Portland Trailblazers
    PG Steve Nash
    PG Damian Lillard
    PG Scott Machado
    SG/ SF Nicolas Batum
    SG Danny Green
    SG Elliot Williams
    SF Michael Kidd-Gilchrist
    SF Grant Hill
    SF/PF Draymond Green
    PF Lamarcus Aldridge
    PF Taj Gibson
    C Omar Asik
    C Joel Freeland
    C Joel Pryzbilla

Portland should be solid on offense here with Nash setting up Da. Green, Batum and Aldridge while Lillard would be free to create for himself more on the second unit.
Defensively this team should be very solid with Batum and MKG handling the wings and studs like Gibson, and Asik down low.
Portland should be an excellent rebounding team led by Asik, Gibson, Aldridge, Dr. Green, and MKG.

I think this team is a solid playoff team and potential title contenders if Lillard and Williams provide scoring off the bench and Nash stays healthy and productive helping people like Batum and Aldridge to take the next step.

Nash is not coming to Portland he only wants to be traded to a playoff team.  I think he called it a contender.  Maybe we should put Dragic in Nash's place above.

I certainly believe he will consider Portland especially since the team I designed is much better than anything Phoenix or Toronto has which seem to be his other main suitors. It also helps that we can offer a lot more money than someone like Miami or New York.

I have to believe that any team led by Nash has a legit chance. Portland would also have some real depth at every position for a change. If the rookies plays well and Elliot stays healthy enough to contribute this team could be very good early on.

I would never ever ever make a deal that depends on MKG falling to #5. In my mind (and many others') he's the only sure thing in this draft other than Davis.

By the way, on that roster replace 2013 Blazers with 2K13 Blazers. That's a video game team, and I think you know it deep down. lol

Asik at starting Center..... The words "Don't smoke Crack" come to mind...... I like your idea to trade players but I don't think we should give as much as you are willing to give to move up in the draft from #6 to #5. At PF we need to sign JJ to a four year deal. Drummond and Hickson together more then clog the paint, not to mention getting all the rebounds. Oh yeah that means we take Drummond at #6 and we don't move up to #5 for Lillard, He will be there at #11 but so will Rivers, Waiters and Ross. I think it is a question of competition and who the team wants to score, Lillard had very little competition but the other 3 had plenty and the shooting guard is supposed to be the one to score, not the Pg. I think at #11 we take Rivers.

Asik only was tied with Kevin Garnett and Dwight Howard for defensive rating over the last 2 seasons. He average a block and over 5 rebounds per game despite just playing 15 minutes. If we can get at least 24 minutes out of him that is 8.5 rebounds a game. He is not an offensive threat but his incredible post defense, great rebounding would make an effective combination with the more offensive minded Freeland. If Freeland can give us 10 points and 5 rebounds in his 24 minutes. Portland would have 12 points, 13 rebounds per game from the C position those numbers are vastly improved over last year.

    Asik?

    That would be a waste.
After all that dealing and using up our cap space and picks you would leave the hardest position to acquire as far as talent goes empty?

Portland needs to try and go after Brook Lopez. Yeah he missed nearly all of last season but it was a foot injury and could of played the last part of the season, Nets were playing it safe in hopes of using him in a trade for Howard, no bad knees or anything like that.

I know everyone is hot and heavy on Lillard but there is a good bunch of PG's available on free agency this year, restricted and non restricted. Dragic, Aaron Brooks, Nate Robinson, among others.

We need rebounding badly and Brook Lopez is the worst rebounding center in the NBA sure he can score but we already have a great post scorer. We need rebounding and defense Asik gives us both.

I want to avoid the trap of grabbing players and placing them in starting roles just because we like what we've seen of them. Asik might have had 5 rebounds and 1 block in 15 min per game, but what if he only averages 7 rebounds and 1.2 blocks as a starter with 32+ minutes. Suddenly, it's a problem. Moving for Asik as starting center smells a lot like Felton at starting point. Some guys' niches are to come off the bench and play minimal yet meaningful minutes. I don't see Asik thriving as a starter, but, yes, he's a good basketball player.

He might not be a starter but he is certainly someone I would like for Portland to go after based on his great rebounding and defense alone.

He's a bencher at best. Now that SVG is gone from Orlando, i dont see Patrick Ewing hanging around for long either. Lets get him to train Thabeet and whatever young center we draft.

You are assuming that we still have Nic Batum on the roster in 2013.  He could very easily get traded to San Antonio or any other team that wants his services.

Brain Batum is likely to be kept by this team so yes any of those moves I made could easily not happen but I think at this point he is someone the team wants and should consider keeping

If FoulWeatherFan is correct would we be interested in offering an identical contract that Min offered to Batum and consider trading him.  I thought that in the restricted free agent there is either a match or no match option so how would we respond to this condition?  With Indiana matching (or offering an identical contract?)  We might need to tweak our strategy.

I think we had better watch Kevin Pritchard (Indiana GM) because he is very good at manipulating the rules or lack of rules.  I was always amazed at what he did when he was in Portland.

The team is well designed but the money for free agents is well off and that is always the problem trying to do a massive overhaul.
