Note I am not going to mention the players on our team in this thread. This thread is designed specifically to look at free agents or potential trade targets that would make this team a contender.

PG Restricted FA George Hill- he is kind of a combo guard but he is a great defender and he offers a lot of flexibility for teams. He could be available for around the mid-level exception.

PG Delonte West - He is also a combo guard and like Hill he is a great defender. He will available for cheap and would offer some great depth to a team.

Both players would offer great flexibility for the team and are proven defenders something essential for playoff teams. Both players would cost around the same as Gragic allowing the team to spend money elsewhere.

SG Danny Green - he has made great strides this year with the Spurs and should cash in this summer because of it. His solid defense and 43% 3 point shooting would be a great benefit for teams at around 3-4 million a season.

SG Alonzo Gee- From the d-league, Gee has come along way he is decent perimeter defender and has made great strides this season. He would be a nice role player on a contender but since he can also play the three he will likely make around 4 million a little to expensive for this team.

SG Avery Bradley- he is another combo guard whose scoring improved down the stretch but it was his all-world defense that has him high on my list. He is still on a rookie contract and will likely be a part of the new look Celtics but if we can swing a deal for him it would be a great move.

SG Tony Allen- Here is another elite defender who would be a great piece on a contender. He is one of the best defenders in the league and has become a proven leader for the upstart Grizzlies. He has improved his shot selection over the last few years and while he won't score a ton he can still get to the line or hit an open three. Great value but won't be easy to get from Memphis.

Making a deal for Tony Allen and Avery Bradley while signing someone Danny Green would give the team a great one-two punch. Allen and Bradley would be asked to guard some of the leagues best players and that is a role that they relish, great defense gives a team a chance to win it all.

Some of those names could push a good playoff team into contention, but it won't push a non playoff team like Portland into a contender. 7th, 8th seed playoffs maybe. If Portland and its fans will be content with just making the playoffs then that would all work fine.

It takes time or money to build a contender, Portland has both with this years draft and Paul Allen. Although Allen has made it clear the big spending days are over. I would rather see them plan and build a contending team in 2-4 years rather than go out of the 1st round of the playoffs for 4 straight years.

SF Grant Hill I realize the man is getting up there in age but he is unselfish and remains one of the better defensive SF in basketball. He is no longer a starter on a playoff team but he could provide a contender a solid 15-20 minutes of the bench.

SF Devin Ebanks He is a good energy guy and plays very solid defense his game is not going to wow anyone but for the price he will command and his defensive skills alone he would be a valuable piece at the end of the bench. You could do worse than a good defender who loves to crash the offensive glass at the end of the bench.

SF Andre Iguodala I know this one does not count since he is a stud and signing him would not be un-traditional at all. Unless of course you consider a playoff team trading their best player un-traditional. He is an elite defender, a solid rebounder, and a excellent passer. Any team that acquires him large contract and all would be taking a major stride forward.

Jermaine O''Neal, Drazen, Z-Bo, Sheed (I know he was already a star but still). Also Drazen was buried under Drexler and Porter.

What happens if we don''t win? Dwight will start his nonsense, we would be out a lot of money, and with no real talent to show for it. San Antonio and Memphis is proof that you don''t need superstars to win.

Special K, aren''t you a cereal? And yes, Batum is expensive, but I think he''s worth it. Why would you take someone who isn''t is as good, just for less money. Then why don''t we take the worst possible player and pay him the least possible amoun...
